Bethesda's Endless Summer Surfaces in Australia

Bethesda Softworks is cooking up something called Endless Summer, but it doesn't sound quite as pleasant as the title would suggest.

What is Endless Summer? It sounds to me like the title of a coming-of-age comedy flick, or perhaps a Harlequin-style romance novel (one of the tasteful ones, that is) but the truth is that aside from apparently being a videogame, nobody knows.

The name surfaced on the Australian Classification website yesterday, with a rating of MA15+ for "strong horror themes and violence." Bethesda Softworks is listed as the author, which I guess is Australianese for "developer," and the publisher is ZeniMax Europe.

And there you have it. There may be some connection to Bethesda's recently-revealed The Evil Within [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/123394-Bethesda-Reveals-The-Evil-Within], although that bit of wild and baseless guessing is due solely to the proximity of its announcement and the fact that they're both horror games. We've reached out to Bethesda for more information, and in the meantime - speculate! Endlessly, if you like.

Yeesh, Bethesda is just churning out the new IP announcements aren't they? And it seems like they're getting a bit of a horror boner...do you think they saw Jim's pasta video and now they're trying to make the horror chunky?

Speculate? Don't mind if I do!

It turns out the game is the protagonist watching 500 Days Of Summer, endlessly (hence the name). It starts off all nice and happy, as the man is a fan of both Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon Levitt. However, it takes a turn for the worse when it comes to the five viewing where the man begins to tire of the antics, especially since he hasn't eaten, drank or went to the bathroom throughout the whole thing. It gets worse and worse until finally, the encounter with the last boss. A literal interpretation of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl that Zooey embodies so well.

The newest in Bethesda's range of summer rom-coms, joining Fallout- the story of a couple who just couldn't stay together (featuring copious drugs, dismemberement and freezing), Oblivion- the story of a man who just couldn't stand his own memories so decides to get them wiped (featuring Jim Carrey!) and Skyrim- the story of a metaphor that ran on to long and ran out of ideas.

No concrete ideas on this, except to note that 'Endless Summer' sounds a lot like the old Nord term for war, 'Season Unending'. Maybe a new Elder Scrolls one?

Captcha: Rise and Shine. How oddly appropriate.....

Yes please, more vikings! Although maybe it's a bit too similar to Skyrim which had strong Norse themes, unless they are going for a direct sequel (which doesn't sound as good)?

I'm a surf guy and it's pretty lame they'd poach that title. It means a lot to us. The films are iconic, and that's just too creepy of them to not know that or try to taint it.

Austrivion. Tasrim. Ayerwind. Kangafall.

Thinking about it, how about a mythical Australia setting, but instead of goblins you get dropbears and aborigine myths attackin' you. Final boss is the rainbow serpent.

Dropped in the middle of a desert you don't know who or even what you are. All you know is the unending heat. Can you survive the sun? Will you find out what you are? Will anyone even care about this idea?

The answer is unknowable.

You were actually a water droplet
