It's hard to tell just how much credit Biden and his team deserves for the deal though. It can also be easily used by the GOP as a "look how bad unions are for the country, they almost paralyzed railway transport evem after securing a 20% raise". I totally agree that democrats are far better for the economy than GOP, but I'm not convince this story is necessarily the best example of that.

Biden "intervened" months ago to come up with a deal but totally ignored the main issues of the workers, which isn't pay but quality of life matters like being able to take more than a day off per month and being able to call off sick. 24% is pretty fucking good as a wage increase. However it does raise two slightly awkward questions;

1) How responsible is Biden and the Democratic Party for this? I can see they were involved in negotiation, but usually the governing party plays a mediating/facilitating role with this kind of thing. Certainly creditable but... well, not necessarily actually responsible.

2) If 24% was within the industry's ability to provide, why the hell was this conflict necessary in the first place? Why is it the default position of industry to hold back the pay provisions they are able to provide? We know the answer to this latter question.

Pay wasn't the crux of the issue; time off was. With staffing shortages in the industry, workers were basically kept on-call on a constant basis. That makes it hard to, you know, live your life outside of the job- and anyone who thinks "they should just deal with it because they're needed" should be forced to do the same.

Only two of the three unions' representatives at the negotiations agreed to the deal, and it has yet to be ratified by the unions that did agree. The only thing that was accomplished, was kicking the can down the road by two weeks and even that's not a guarantee.

My Grandma, to this day close to 97 years old, has never voted Democrat. Ever. She has absolutely hated the Republican candidates, but she openly says she will never forgive FDR for the New Deal and swore to never vote for a Democrat as long as she lived.
