After having just watched the first gameplay footage from BioShock 2, which looks more amazing than I thought it would be, especially with you playing a Big Daddy who seems to have free will of some sort, I though to myself, "This is awesome! Almost too awesome..." Then it hit me. The Big Daddy, however interesting it is, is essentially a steampunk version of a space marine. Master Chief 1920s style underwater, if you will. That doesn't neccesarily cheapen the game, and I am actually really looking forward to playing as a Big Daddy (I so wanted to in the first BioShock), but I thought that this was interesting enough to bring up. Maybe 2K better be careful to avoid cliches, but so far, this is looking good.

Thoughts?

Well, you do suffer from "superior prototype syndrome", that is, being the first Big Daddy your superior to other big daddies in that you can use plasmids, and are not conditioned to little sisters.

I always thought of big daddy as frankenstein...

We did essentially play a Big Daddy in BioShock, but it just wasn't the same experience we were looking for.
Your observation is odd, I'd say yes and no...=P

Also: The BioShock 2 gameplay looks BITCHIN'.

Yeah, all it did was make my footsteps louder, my voice all weird and put blinders on my screen to represent the helmet lol.

"superior prototype syndrome"
And I still don't get that, I mean, the first car was probably pretty shitty compared to the new Mercedes or something.
By the way, about the free will: At first, it APPEARED as if we had free will in Bioshock 1, too, I guess they might go a similar route. AFAIK the Big Daddys can't really behave any differently than they've been made to do.

I want one so bad...
They're both leathal and endearing at the same time! Somehow, so cuddly. Like a giant, steampunk teddy bear.
No space marine will ever be as adorable as the Big Daddies.

One of my friends wants the Big Sister.
That weirdo thinks its cute.

It's only a space marine because you want it to be a space marine.

Alternatively, I concur.
Damn you for pointing this out...

...I still want this game...

it could be argued that any game that gives you guns makes you a "space marine" of some sort.

Bioshock was always a run 'n gun FPS with a buffed up super soldier main character. Making the main character a buffed up super soldier inside a tin can actually serves to humanise him, in my opinion, as it's a visible flaw.

Kinda off-topic, but I like the games where you aren't such a supersoldier. It's kinda boring to be vastly superior.
Say, Far Cry on Realistic, now that was interesting...

Yeah i was thinking that as well, i think the fact that you where just a normal person in this under water environment where everything has gone to hell was a great part of the story

i guess we will be seeing that from a different perspective now

it will still be great though ^^
