Biggest game let down you've ever had?

What I'm looking for here are the horror stories of games that started off enjoyable and then sent you into an all caps rage when something happened. It could be a twist in the story that ruined it for you, or a game mechanic was introduced that broke the game, or it could even be that other fans were so obnoxious you didn't wish to associate with them anymore. To start with, I'll share mine.

Lord of the Rings: The Third Age.

Ok, so the game play was copy-pasted Final Fantasy X fare and they stole cut scenes and dialog right from the movies, but this was 2003 (I think...) so it was all still fresh and awesome. I was totally shipping Berethor, basically the Boromir of the game (Boromir was my favorite in Fellowship. I find him tragic and sexy and Sean Bean is the man) and Idrial, a female elf who healed but also kicked ass with a sword. For the first 20 or so minutes of the game they are your entire party, and they have some pretty intense scenes together. Then, a few chapters into the game, Morwen shows up and ruins everything. Berethor is checking her out, Idrial comes off as jealous and juvenile (how can a Tolkien elf be juvenile?) but still romance develops in their favor. Until Idrial becomes separated from the group and Berethor goes to rescue her and in so doing confronts his inner demons. On the way back he tries to tell her he loves her but she's like "After the war I'm leaving with my people. You belong with Morwen." Problem is, there was NO ROMANTIC GROWTH between Berethor and Morwen. None whatsoever, and Morwen was useless in combat. She dual-wielded hand axes, and ALMOST ALWAYS missed with one of them, so she did half damage. She could also steal from the enemies, but since there was no shop system and healing items could be found in abundance, that was pointless.

Finally, the Nazgul King stabs Morwen and I was like "YUSH! ***** gonna die, Berethor gonna get back with his elf lady, like he belongs..." but no. Aragorn pulls his "I'm the King of Man" stunt like he did with Eowyn and magically heals her. Lamest voice acting ever insues... "Berethor!" "I'm here!" ... passionless kiss. Nearly chucked my controller. Top it all off with the fact that Morwen, in her starting armor, looks like she just walked off the stage of a Peter Pan musical, as the lead character, and it's all... rage inducing.

After Morwen was introduced and I smelled trouble to begin with, the game kept dangling Berethor and Idrial in front of me. Just before dawn of the third day during the Battle of Helms Deep (if you know LOTR at all you know what I mean) she kisses him and tells him to have hope. When the Nazgul abduct her and he goes after her... through the sewers of Osgiliath while she holds off several Nazgul attacks by herself... well it's not White Knight rescues Helpless Damsel, it's BETTER than that! So why she turns around and rejects him as he tries to tell her how he feels, and how he's suddenly OK with it and dry humping Morwen's leg... it's just so jarring and awful.

So... come on Escapist Forum... what were the games that induced rage in you? What games started out with such promise and then trolled you?

I gotta say either Sonic 2006 or Call of Duty 3

CoD 3 didn't have the magic the 2nd one did at the time but Sonic 2006 is also the worst game I've ever played so I guess I'll go with the one thats just shit anyway.

Sonic 2006.

Indiana Jones on the Game Boy. The original Game Boy.
Anyway I was borrowing it from a friend and I couldn't even get past the first level the maze was so confusing. Plus the game sucked anyway.

The coduit was a pretty big letdown, personally. It won all these "best of E3" awards and I bought into the hype. Good thing I didn't buy it on launch; it was shit.

I rented a game a while back, it was a lord of the rings game, I forget the title. All I remember is you play a random troop in each of the battles, either a warrior, rogue, or mage (right, haven't seen THAT before...). And I was enjoying it, at first. Then we got to the battle of Isengard and the difficulty curve turned into a brick wall. After stumbling through that, we went to...Moria, for some reason. And the brick wall turned into a dome. After several retarded deaths I said "FGSFDS" and took the disk out. Took all I had to not break the disk in half instead of returning it.

OT; Fahrenheit. Game was good until 'anchent mistikal kult lolz' appears. >_>
This, badly. I was so enjoying Fahrenheit until giant ghost bugs and other crazy stuff appears. I honestly thought it was some kind of groovy psychological thriller type.

Either Assassins Creed 2 or Red Dead Redemption. My friends urged me greatly to buy both of these games, however I did not enjoy them all that much.

It was still pretty good, but when I compared it to the first one, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 was a real disappointment. Fewer costumes, fewer powers, less customization.

I'm gonna throw my hat in for Spore as well. The game seemed great and had massive potential, but by the time it saw release it had been heavily trimmed and cut. It also marks for me one of the big leaps into the depths of DRM hell.
