Bioshock - Andrew Ryan Still Alive?

Yeah, like said, the Vita-Chamber was turned off.
Of course, he could've always gone to another Vita-Chamber, since the main character spawns in Vita-Chambers pretty far away from where one was when one died, but that's beside the point.

I think that, unless they're just retarded, they let him die. The scene is much, much better that way.

And let's say he did not die. I can't quite remember, but I don't think the Splicers were particularly "best friends" with him.

Spoilers below.

Andrew Ryan knew that you were his son, and he wanted you to be able to rise above your genetic programming. To be a man, not a slave. He believed it enough to stake his life on it and was wrong. The Vita-Chamber in his office is turned off, you can actually switch it back on after he dies.

So no, I'd say Ryan was dead. Otherwise that scene loses everything that made it good.

I got a completely different conclusion from that scene. Ryan knew you were there to kill him. He knew Atlas/ Fontaine was trying to take his Rapture. So he was going to destroy Rapture out of spite. And if he was going to die, it would be on his own terms. He died lording his genetic superiority over you. He died a man.
I thought about that too. Wasn't too sure. The fact is, it would have been just as easy for him to say, "Kill Atlas, would you kindly?" Or Code Yellow. Or anything really. It's possible that he decided that his time was up and there wasn't anything good left in Rapture, in which case your interpretation works too. Either way, if it was a clever ruse and he survived, that scene loses all its weight.

Also, considering Ryan's dedication to control over his own life, he would want to be in full control over his death. If he tried to escape he would still be vulnerable to attack from Fontaine's goons.

I think all the good reasoning has already been used so i'll just say this-
"I would be fairly surprised if he came back after having his face caved in with a golf club"

Given that it's just not Bioshock without Andrew Ryan, I'm inclined to agree that he's probably alive. I heard someone say once that he turned off his own Vit-A-Chamber, but that'd just mean he'd pop up at a different one.

Wel then you wasted about a minute of my life. Happy? I am going to Mcdonalds to take this out on my body.

OT: No. Theres no coming back ffrom being gold clubbed in the head, I don't care if there is a vitachamber. And for that sense, How come no other character that you killed in the game came back to life?

He turned them off before it happened. It was for the good of you and to show you that you can overcome Fontaine's hold on you.

Because no matter what the death, the chamber will perfectly replicate your body to the way it was before. And because it only works for people with Ryan's DNA which is you and him.

Family only. Jack was Ryan's son.

Now if you haven't played Bioshock yet and plan to, then would you kindly go pick up the f--king game already? It's cheap now.

SPOILERS AHEAD

I think Andrew Ryan is still alive. Before you go and say "what about that f--king golf club you owned him with dumbass?!" hear me out.

The Vita-Chambers never left the testing phase, in that phase they only worked for people inside of Andrew Ryan's genetic ballpark (which would include you, and obviously, A. Ryan). Now when you are almost to his office he keeps saying he won't fight, that his weapon is intelligence. And I think that clever bastard was right. Think about it, you walk in, and he HANDS YOU THE DAMN GOLF CLUB AND ACTUALLY SAYS: "Kill Me!!!" why the hell would he do that?

I think it is because he knew he couldn't run without being hunted down, BUT, if he let you beat him to death, he could come back in a nearby vita chamber, and run the f--k out of there without anyone knowing he was still alive.

So why did he initiate the self destruct? Well, he knew you were about to kill him and disable it, that's why. It adds a level of desperation that makes everyone think he is down to his most desperate suicidal ideas when really he has a handy tube three rooms down standing by.

It makes sense.

Before you say: "You are over thinking it" remember how complicated this game's plot was, and the intricate fabric it wove with all of the audio diaries, I don't think this sort of forethought would be without reach of the Bioware Devs. at all. In fact, I think if Andrew Ryan does NOT come back, then they made a mistake, and it is a plot hole.
Honestly dude, click 'edit' on your post and change the title of the thread.

It's not fair to have spoilers like that sprawled across the forum.

Oh wow, I think I missed a rather relevant detail when I played this game.

For all those mad at the title:

Seriously? This game has been out FOREVER, and what's in the title is TOTALLY predictable, if I ruined the big twist, THAT would be piss-worthy, but come on guys, what should I call the title instead? "Bioshock Thing" Nobody would click that.

EDIT: Also, I think this was a great move for the Bioware devs, because now they can choose whether to have A. Ryan alive or dead for the sequel, and they would be able to justify either choice.

Some say the vita chamber in his office was deactivated so he HAS to be dead (that's what it says on the Bioware wiki) I don't think that is really a definitive proof that he is dead, after all, nobody ever specified a range on the vita chambers, and there were plenty all around rapture.

And to those saying: "His body would have disappeared" would it have? It's not like we could stick around after death in Bioshock 1 and see if our body disappeared or not, we can go back and not find it later, but that doesn't prove anything, enemies corpses that have been fully looted disappear later too.

Don't beat yourself up, they only specified it in an audio diary, and very few people listen to all of those

I like how people assume that because the vita-chamber was off he couldn't come back somewhere else. What kind of a fail-safe device to keep you alive could be foiled by just pulling the plug on one? Maybe Andrew Ryan turned it off so that he would come back somewhere else so Fontaine wouldn't know he's still alive and order the player to cave his head in again. And surely Ryan wouldn't set Rapture to self destruct unless he knew it would be deactivated? It seems far more likely that Ryan set the city to self destruct so that Fontaine would think Ryan was dead, save Rapture and then get killed by the player and then Ryan could take over.

Wow you're right; it says:
"On the way to the controls, Jack notices a Vita-Chamber - a deactivated chamber. Rather than fleeing or doing battle with Jack, Ryan had shut it down, to prevent the device from resurrecting him, before confronting his son for the first and last time - Andrew Ryan, industrialist, inventor, and father, was irreversibly dead at age 68."

Oh, but what does it say after that? Citation needed.
