BioWare: Motion Controls Will Make Games Better

Turning the player into an "actor" in a scene, rather than "voyeur" simply watching it, could be very powerful, says Zeschuk, and that being able to control a character in a much more natural way could be a great boon to storytelling. But developers will have to careful about the gestures they include in a game, he says, as something as simple as looking away from the screen can shatter the immersion.
If I wanted to act I would do drama. I however, do not want to act I want to play games and push buttons to make things go boom or make a Dragon appear to smite my enemies or mash one button to juggle a Scarecrow in the air and then smash its face into the ground with an extendo arm. I have never once thought "Man I wish I could pretend I had a gun and do this or I wish I could make the smashing movement myself". Imagine Ninja Gaiden or Prince of Persia on pure motion controls. Even then I don't think some sort of hybrid is a good idea as anything that can't be done well with a controller/game pad can be done with a keyboard and mouse or an arcade stick.

No no no.

Bioware, or at least the talking-heads of Bioware, you need to understand that motion controls are gimmicky bits of fluff that detract from immersion rather than enhance it. Now, if you want to go and invent a direct neural-interface device so that we can 'think and feel' our game avatar's actions....go right ahead. THAT would be immersive.

Flailing your arm around like you have a bug on it isn't the way to go.

That bit with the quip always reminds me of that CSI: Miami style video somebody posted on here a while back. God that was funny...

Hmm...I'm smelling a Microsoft bribe somewhere...
One of the most common things I hate on game forums is bribe conspiracies, something fanboys would usually say...

...but I really REALLY want this one to be true! At least then it will mean Bioware hasn't lost their mind.

I don't know; just pulling a trigger to kill a person is kind of dizzying in the power you feel. If I actually have to exert myself by actually performing the action myself, somehow I think that the sense of power would be reduced.

The king sentencing people to death has power; the executioner swinging the axe does not. While I can see the appeal of being the latter, I'd generally prefer to be the former.

Why would someone being obese be against pushing the controller forward to push a guy away, it's not like the commands are: "To shoot, drop and give me 20 push-ups". Claiming that not liking motion controls means you're an Obese loser is ignorant bigotry.

The fact is, it's unwieldy and breaks the immersion by making you do something that makes you look like an idiot, unless they can manifest holograms in the room for you to push, it's not going to feel immersive, it's just going to make you very aware that you are controlling a game.

It's like when you first tried modern controllers, and every time you shot, you had to think "which button again? Oh yeah, R-trigger" for a little bit, it's going to be like that all the time, and it will RUIN immersion.

I am a massive Bioware fan, the biggest fan I could possibly be, but I do NOT agree with this statement.

Wow...I didn't realize how close minded people were around here. Its always good to keep an open mind on these things and its a shame everyone seems to be closed off to these ideas though.

I think it'd be kind of neat. being able to interact with what Commander Shepard is doing on screen. It doesn't necessarily have to be throughout the whole game, like the guy mentioned, but every once and awhile could be cool.

Guess we'll see how it plays out

Ok, smooth, keeps immersion, wondeful.
Except that there would need to be a giant shove prompt. It would just be muddled IMHO.

These day, whenever I see "Bioware: ____________" as a News Room title...I know something stupid is on its way. I like these guys...but they need to shut up.

I don't think that making hand gestures like I'm conversing in real life at a FLAT SCREEN is going to add to my "immersion".

It'd actually break it, because I'd be distracted by the whole "looking like an idiot" thing.
Agreed.

Motion controls almost always devolve to you dancing around in your room in the latest hours of the night, alone.

bioware would be able to pull it off... a lot of people.... no.
I am of the mindset that Bioware can pull almost anything off, but this isn't a matter of "Bioware using motion controls v. other developers using controllers" Bioware would win there, this is a matter of "Bioware using motion controls v. Bioware using controllers" and considering that motion controls ruin immersion, Bioware will do better with controllers.

They could pull it off in the sense that it will still be good, but it will be WORSE than the equivalent game using controllers instead.

Hopefully this is the only time I will ever, EVER have to say this, but:

Bioware, keep your dumbass ideas to yourself and stop talking out your ass.

Now, if you'll kindly get to work on ME3, I can go back to loving you unconditionally.
Couldn't have said it better my self!

It could work if done right...I'm a bit curious when they'll break the mold and make motion-control something that people will be happy with.

Note* Don't quote to say "Never". You close-minded person!

[sub]On another note* RAWR! I'm must submit to the motion-control haters! They are the only rule! There is no such thing exploiting something to its full potential! RAWR!!!! HATE MOTION CONTROLS![/sub]
Motion controls simply won't work in their current state, it makes you think too much about the interface, instead of thinking about the game, and letting your fingers do their thing automatically.

I like when people make these empty stupid claims and don't even bother to back them up with a single example.

Honestly didn't see that coming from BW. In any case, I disagree, sometimes I game in marathon sessions, I can't be fucking waving my arms around like a lunatic that whole time. When I can put on a headset that completely immerses me in a game that I play by my Central Nervous Center then I will care about Motion Controls.

we prefer the term, bodyly satisfied non-socialists.
but anyway, motioncontrols make something more immersive, but others not. like tetris, or pacman. and non-realistic but still semi-realistic games (like tf2). but it could work for most slash games, i guess
