BioWare Responds To TOR Framerate Issues

Good news: The Old Republic's framerate issues aren't due to Sith interference and BioWare has a solution coming soon.

Even though Star Wars: The Old Republic has been a smashing success so far, it's also had a problematic first month. Aside from <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/114841-The-Old-Republic-Ships-Without-Registration-Codes>shipping without activation codes, users suffering through long server queues, and other reported problems, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/115065-Bioware-Pledges-to-Patch-TOR-Almost-Every-Week>BioWare has pledged to patch the game on a weekly basis. Even though BioWare <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/115125-The-Old-Republic-Is-Looking-a-Bit-Smoother>just released a patch to fix a number of glitches, but it turns out there's already a new problem that the company is scrambling to address: For some reason, a number of gamers are starting to experience major framerate issues when they enter interior locations.

The issue has been complained about on The Old Republic's forums, and BioWare has found that it's a legitimate problem with the game. Community representative "Arrthen" recently thanked those who contributed to the thread, noting that "You've provided the development team with a basis for investigation into the low FPS issues, and with your help they have identified and are in the process of resolving the indoor framerate drop."

While an immediate fix isn't available, Arrthen noted that the technical team will have a blog post up soon with a detailed solution for the problem. Meanwhile, users can perform the following steps, which will hopefully improve performance of the game:

? Close any and all applications running in the background.
? Turn down the in-game graphic settings.
? Change the settings to favour performance over quality if you are using a third party graphic management software.
? Turning off "bloom" in the graphic options in game.
? Turning shadows off and shaders low.
? Update your drivers.

the BioWare technical team has recommended the following course of action.

Close any and all applications running in the background.
Turn down the in-game graphic settings.
Change the settings to favour performance over quality if you are using a third party graphic management software.
Turning off "bloom" in the graphic options in game.
Turning shadows off and shaders low.
Update your drivers.
Way to go technical team, turning down the graphics improves performance. Gee, name me a gamer that doesn't know this.

I really don't understand what the beta was for. There were framerate issues in the beta as well. I did remark upon the alarmingly high number of bugs and issues when discussing the final pre-launch beta stage with some of my friends, and I see I wasn't wrong about the game.

Also very happy I decided not to spend my money on it at launch. Or maybe happy isn't exactly the word, since I really wanted TOR to be good and give me an alternative to WoW.

Now if only they could fix the insane amount of delay between players in PvP. I love stunning a player, have the game tell me that I can see them (When they're clearly infront of me) then have that player teleport out of line of sight when the stun wears off.

And no, it's not my connection. It's been a consistent issue since the games release.

the bugs in this game are pretty damning, just wait until you kill your first raid-boss that just instantly re-spawns, or fails to drop any loot or disconnects you when his lightning disappears

it's just faith-breaking at times but they are working on it so whatevs, i guess.

It is a good game. It's also a new MMO. There's always some glitches that have to be ironed out once they jump from testing with several thousand people to running with a million or so. But from my perspective, SWTOR's launch has been relatively smooth. The queueing issue is mostly a player psychology problem. People kept jumping onto the most crowded servers to avoid being on an empty one. The server I'm on(Shien) started light and only got to a 5-10 minute queue twice for me before that went away. Other glitches I've run into have been minor and didn't last long. Compared to some other MMOs, this has been pretty smooth.

That said, MMO launches aren't for everyone. There are bugs, however minor, and while not as much an issue as it was a few weeks earlier, the lowbie areas are likely still fairly crowded. So if you aren't a die hard Star Wars gamer I wouldn't say that waiting a month or two would be unreasonable. Then again, I'd say that for any MMO, so take that for what it's worth.

Still, it's a fun game and I don't regret my purchase.

And as we know, this is the perfect solution for dealing with a memory leak that will bring a high end system to it's knees in a matter of seconds... :p

It's a memory leak problem I have thankfully not had at all. I know this, all my friends who play it in a window have this problem, I can pretty much just run it constantly without the issue. I would suggest that.

Huh... All this time I thought it was my card. Kind of wish I knew that before I spent US$250 on upgrading my PC.

Oh well. I needed to upgrade that thing anyways...

Funny, it would almost seem like they know what's causing the leak.

You so funny Bioware! So funny!

They must think they are dealing with idiots. The audacity to make such a retarded statement. "O HAY GUYS, WE FOUND DA SOLUTION FOR YOUSE GRAPHICS PROBLEMS. TURN DOWN GRAPHICS"
You do realise that the quoted solution is only a temporary one that might work and that they are working on a fix?

My first BioWare game was DA:O so I may not have all of the info, but it seems they always have a memory leak problem when it comes to their games.

My system is the kind that can run Skyrim in ultra and this game chugs when I'm near more than 3 people indoors. It's even better when the particle effect maelstroms start bum raping the frame rate further. I'm running everything on the lowest possible setting and I'm still having problems. I can see the grass growing in real time for fuck sake. The grass slowly pops in as I ride toward it. It looks neat when I'm riding through a huge, grassy area but I'd prefer to be able to turn my shit up.

Granted, it's been a while so I may be seeing things through rose colored glasses, but my recollection is that when they were turning out engines, the engines themselves were pretty stable. Infinity and Aurora were both solid engines were pretty solid. I'm not sure what Jade Empire ran on (I think it was a modified Aurora engine, but I'm not sure), and Mass Effect (both 1 and 2) is just the Unreal engine, which is a pretty good workhorse engine in general.

Maybe it was just the Dragon Age games. DA2 had only minor issues in that department. DA:O on the other hand was downright sad. If you had been playing the game for a while in one sitting you'd be treated to some crazy long loading screens.

Thanks for the info, though! Technical issues aside, I'm really enjoying TOR.

Of course not, people reading an entire post about BioWare before smugly commenting? That's just weird!

People are still commenting on that /dance issue even though it clearly states everywhere that was just a fake.

Ontopic: I'm unable to play warzones due to low FPS problems, and as soon as more than 5 players are on my screen it starts lagging like crazy. Granted, I have an old computer but the rest of the game runs smoothly...
