BioWare Unveils Dragon Age 2 - UPDATED

BioWare has taken the wraps off of Dragon Age 2 [http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dvideogames&field-keywords=%22Dragon+Age+2%22&x=0&y=0], the sequel to last year's hit RPG, that will follow the adventures of a brand-new hero as he struggles to rise from refugee to champion.

A sequel to a hugely-successful videogame isn't much of a surprise in this day and age, so the announcement of Dragon Age 2 is hardly a shocker. What is a bit surprising, however, is the direction it's taking: Despite that huge loose thread that was potentially left dangling at the end of Dragon Age: Origins [http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dvideogames&field-keywords=%22Dragon+Age+origins%22&x=0&y=0], the second chapter will be an entirely new game set in a completely different part of the world.

In Dragon Age 2, players will take on the role of a survivor of the Blight, a refugee cast adrift on a world in upheaval. The game will feature new combat mechanics, updated graphics and a "new visual style," and will span an entire decade as the player gathers "the deadliest of allies" and rises to become the champion of the land.

In other words, it'll follow the standard BioWare [http://www.bioware.com] formula pretty much to the letter, which means you can also expect a romance option with a troubled, reluctant sexpot, an oversized goon with a propensity for violence and a cheerful sidekick whose light-hearted wisecracking masks a deep, dark secret.

Like the original, Dragon Age 2 is being developed for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and while no release target has been set, February 2011 is currently the Dragon Age 2 announcement [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99075-Dragon-Age-2-Release-Date-Already-Set] for more information and updates!

UPDATE: EA has released a few more details about Dragon Age 2. Players will take on the role of Hawke, a refugee from the Blight who becomes "the single most important character in the world of Dragon Age." Even more important than the guy who actually ended the Blight? I'm looking forward to discovering how that's going to work. The rumored release date wasn't too far off the mark either; Dragon Age 2 has been given an official launch target of March 2011.

So its not Jade Empire 2?

Aw...

Still, yay for DA2... yay...

Plus, didn't they kind of announced DA2 a while ago when they said they're working on making the graphics for the second one sexy as hell?

Ah well. And I'm glad they're putting it in a new setting. The world they created is huge and deep, it'd be foolish not to explore everything. And I'm guessing they'll tie up any Origins stuff through DLC.

Huh, I like this refugee idea. Sounds fancy.
Plus, I loved DA1, so I'm looking forward to this very much!

So something just hit me. When the hell did Bioware become so massive that they can simultaneously work on whats possibly the largest (in terms of development size not the game itself) and expensive MMO ever created, Mass Effect 3, AND Dragon Age 2, not to mention whatever secret projects they might be working on that we don't know about??

Jeez, it seems like only yesterday that Dragon Age came out. Never played the original, but with my soon-to-be-here new PC I soon shall!

When Mass Effect 2 became wildly successful. Followed immediately by Dragon Age's success.

But they do it so well!

And what thread was left dangling at the end of Origins?

OT: YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!

What loose thread?

Reading the description at the site the impression I got was that this would take place in a whole new setting, you know, no grey wardens, no darkspawn. Kinda like what Final Fantasy does every installment.

Morrigan's demon-child abomination, of course. Which not everyone will consider "canon" (one of the many failings of the "choose your own adventure" bullshit that modern RPGs insist on using) but certainly significant enough to warrant a follow-up.

A: Why no more DLC?

B: I would bet a ton of money that they won't, because the Mac isn't really a gaming platform. I'm fairly sure that the original Dragon Age wasn't on Mac, and if not, there's no way the second one will be.

Same world. We're just not playing a Grey Warden this time.

I, for one, really want to find out the fate of my demon baby.

My second favourite game on my 360 is getting a sequel.
Excitement...levels...rising! I want to go find
Morrigan and my baby please!

*EDIT* That will teach me to post without reading the OP first. That sucks that you can't import your character from the first game.

Personally I didn't find it all that good and didn't see what everyone was getting so crazy about it for.

It was too much luck for me in an RPG. Having to run at a room over and over until that one guy decides not to use a specific attack is not what I look for in an RPG and I hope it will be rectified in DA2.
