March 2011? Sweet! March 1st is my birthday. That means I'll have the money ready. I wonder if the protagonist will have a real voice actor like Mass Effect...

I can honestly say that if I can't bring back my old character, if I can't finish the dangling plot threads with Morrigan, the Architect, and others, then I may not even bother with this.

All of DA:O felt to me to be building up to some epic saga, especially considering that every epilogue (if you live) has set up cliffhangers and plot threads to be followed in sequels. And here we are, sequel on the way and it seems so far departed from DA:O it might well be a spin off.

I don't care about Hawke, I care about my little Cousland.

The fact that your name is set as Hawk is cool this means people will start calling you by name! instead of some title like well, 'Gray Warden' and I'm assuming you will have your own voice like in Mass effect I have been missing having my own voice in RPG's since I played the first Mass effect and I missed it in Origins.

This game shouldn't be boycotted, it should be destroyed. This, contrary to popular belief, is not Dragon Age. Dragon Age is with our characters, our choices and consequences, our customizations, and our companions not some douche named Hawke who is ME virus infecting DA. A sequel means continuation of a story not some new crap ass one. The story from DAO never even ended according to the end of DAA. Bioware finish what you started. If you want this Hawke douche, then make a separate RPG with this chode. I want Dragon Age back and not some screwed up excuse for a sequel. Come on, I've spent too much time and money on DAO and the dlc to have the franchise be MY story. I hope this game busts and people learn a valuable lesson. Hopefully by then people will come to their senses and Dragon Age 3 will be what Dragon Age 2 should be. As for now, I'm just going to keep ranting about what crap is being produced. I want my game back!!!!! ... and don't tell me it will be alright, it clearly will not be so!

Rarely do I get this annoyed about games, but what utter nonsense!

Dragon Age: Origins was the game I waited years for and delivered in every way possible for me. I've dumped a good 150 hours on multiple play throughs in past year.

This? Well, right now this thing is an utter disappointment. I don't give a fig about graphics, Dragon Age looked good on my PC so I'm never got what people complained about. Everything I've read thus far about this...sequel leaves me with dread or annoyance. So, those characters I spent so much time with molding...gone. I get this schmuck "Hawke" now? Well, whoopty-do.

I hated Mass Effect (easily my least favorite Bioware title) and elements form that is getting into my beloved Dragon Age? Ugh...just ugh. I thought the expansion was rough, this sequel looks down right awful in its structure.

Mass Effect did this, and it worked, sort of, but Commander Sheperd never felt like she was "my" character to me. Nobody ever used your first name, so that was a useless customisation, and your appearance didn't matter. I was always very aware that I was playing a completely preestablished character, and while it was always a good story, I was never that engaged in it. Dragon Age gave us a lot of wiggle room with our characters, despite the fact that you were still working from origin stories, and you wound up feeling as though you were playing a unique character, even if you actually weren't. It doesn't sound like that's going to be the case here.

I mean, I suppose if you're going to have a story take place over a DECADE, forcing the player to play a certain character with certain motivations and a certain backstory would cut down on a lot of variables writers and designers would otherwise have to take into account. But right now, it just sounds far too rigid and limiting for me. I'll probably be passing on this one, barring any additional details. It's far too early to leap on the hatred train completely, but this really doesn't sound like what I personally want out of the series.

My major concern here is the whole bit about "you play a refugee named Hawke who rises to become the most important character in the Dragon Age World" or however that read.

See, one of the most ingenius aspects of "Dragon Age: Origins" that has actually been being imitated by games like "Fallout: New Vegas" was the multiple character backstories/origins and so on.
Um, are you talking about that rumor ages ago about having a Ghoul background etc for Fallout: New Vegas? And that it would be similiar to DA:O in that way?

Well, that was proven wrong by Obsidian. That rumor wasn't true. I'm sick of everyone going nuts about stuff and no gameplay etc have been released yet. I'm fine with the information we've heard so far.
Well for starters I can find plenty of referances to that being true, including some claiming first hand knowlege, or second hand knowlege from journalists who have gone to see the game in it's early state. I however cannot find anything about Obsidian flat out saying that this was not the case, and looked both yesterday (when you first mentioned this) and again today.

As far as no gameplay being released, that is not true to be entirely honest. We've seen shots of gameplay via various trailers and such. There has not been a developer walk through of the game engine or character generation though. Given that the game comes out in few months I am wondering if there will be one at all.

That said even if you are correct and it's a rumor, it's noteworthy that it falls under wishful thinking given the number of people that have responded positively to the idea in covering it. Meaning that it's something that people would want, even if it doesn't materialize.

I admit my concern is that "Dragon Age II" will wind up nerfing the RPG aspects of the game. Not being able to name your protaganist and so on is a bad sign. It makes me concerned that they are going to strip it down as much as they did with the "Mass Effect" games between iterations. I suppose that's not a bad thing if your a shooter fan, but for people like me who are RPG fans, and want our RPGs to be RPGs it's hardly a good sign. Like many RPG fans I actually wanted "Dragon Age" to feature a somewhat deeper system given that on a lot of levels you more or less just chose a class and a block of skills for how you wanted to fight, while okay, it would have been nice if you had differant ways of developing a sword and shield fighter or whatever rather than simply choosing the order you filled out the catagory for example.

It really scares me how BioWare seems to have willingly ignored several excellent plot threads that could have led to important moral conflicts for a returning Warden. It is seriously frightening. The idea that the story will take place over the course of a decade is startling to me, because it sounds like it would create a rather staggered narrative that will mean a relatively weak story.

Seems like Bioware is going the way of MMO's, with cookie cutter characters that are part of a single plot arc. I liked DA:O because it broke away from that trend and let you play around a little, gave you different options to explore and made repeated gameplay worth something to see how the different origins worked out.

This new game seems to only follow a single path that won't have much replay value. Also, the timetable for its release seems a bit quick to me, maybe EA is leaning on Bioware to release a new game and turn over a quick dollar. All in all, I think it might be enjoyable because Bioware does things well, but it will probably be a far cry from the original.

DA:A was like that, rushed, no character development over the course of the game, really a disappointment when the other characters were so much better in DA:O. Not sure why they want to push out flat characters that have no life, really makes for a crappy game. Seems to me that DA2 will follow the formula of KOTOR2, sounds very similar.

So DA:O took up about 20GBs of hard drive space. Here's hoping Dragon Age 2 will take up somewhere around 40GBs.

Hmm....I love the idea of a sequel to Dragon age, but the idea of having a pre-made character is somewhat.....disturbing. the reason I loved Dragon age was because I could create who ever I wanted. this Hawke fellow (or lass) sounds like he's already made.

I think what Bioware is going for is that some of the games will be about your character from DA:O story and others will be about Hawke, hey maybe they'll even bring in another character as they haven't announced how many games there will be.

Does this mean they're going to force us to play as a human? Playing as a human in a fantasy RPG is like choosing accountant for your class. I want to be a dwarf damn it! Or at least a Quinari.
Also: I noticed they didn't say which blight Hawke was a refugee from. Maybe this guy ends up being the first Warden Commander.
Still; I'd rather play as Paragon Aeducan if they're doing that part of the timeline.
Good point about which Blight, I wouldn't be hoping for too much but hey, it'd be interesting to play as the first Commander. I love how you said at least Qunari when it wasn't a race in the first game. It would seem that dwarf would be the at least...But yeah, ifthe race thing was set in stone I'd be a little saddend but play nonethelss. (P.S. It would be badass to play as Aeducan.)

Uh, why only one character choice? The first one had great replayability, where a change in gender and background effected the outcome of the game. Now I'm playing as Hawke? Can I at least rename him?

Not just this thread, you should check out the BioWare forums, its a battleground there. Everyone is going crazy (in a bad way) about this game. I agree with what you're saying and people should wait awhile before making a judgement on the game.

But what i'm worried about is the new art style they said they'd be taking (PLEASE NOT BORDERLANDS STYLE) and the coversation wheel like Mass Effect's which has been confirmed aswell. It seems like they're Mass Effect'ing this game and it annoys me, don't fix what isn't broken BioWare.

BioWare have said you can change you gender and class but not your race. I'm guessing Hawke is just a second name like "Shepard" in Mass Effect 1/2.

Wait... So no Sten?...
It's too early to know for certain, but it's a fairly educated assumption that nobody from the first game will be returning. Makes me a sad panda, but knowing Bioware, there will be an entirely new cast of characters I'll grow to love.
Bioware likes to bring back a few of their most popular characters in their sequals and expansions. (Thinking of the expansions to Neverwinter nights. That didn't follow the story of main game at all.)

And if played right, Sten will returns to his homelands at the end of Dragon age 1. So I think it's very likly for him make an apperance.
