I'm gonna get blasted I'm sure for this, but I never played Baldur's Gate. I have played Dragon Age Origins, and in terms of content it is vast.
So, could one of you Baldur's Gate Veterans give me a proper comparison in terms of content and execution between BG and DA:O?
Well...
You know the whole pause and set your orders thing with DA:O? Thats the combat system, its almost impossible to win some of the tougher fighters unless your constantly pausing to change what your party members are doing. So if you liked that tactical gameplay, baldurs gate has a much better combat system for calculating numbers and has far less of the "fight the same goddamn enemy again" sequence. Every "chapter" of the game has completely different enemies who fight in a completely different manner.
Despite this chapter game, you still have as much freedom as you would in a sandbox game, think fallout 3, a main story but plenty of other stuff to see and do before you even have to move into much of the main plot. The big difference is that the Plot itself is absolutely awesome, it contains all the party interactions of DA:O, except that the things you say and do actually matter. Party members who disagree with you dont simply have a little meter move, they will leave your party. Hence you surround yourself with like-minded individuals. Your characters are closer to real human beings than any game series I've palyed, having their own distinct personalities
Theres far more classes than DA:O but uses the AD&D rules which means your less physically manipulating individual stats and more manipulating what your character specificlly excells at (a fighter is going to the same as another fighter but fighter A specilises in using longswords while fighter B uses a mace and shield). This rule system is not for people who like JRPG style customization (not saying you wont like it, just saying its the exact opposite of that mass number of customizations).
The story is absoultely fantastic aswell, i cant say much without spoiling it but its the kind of story which takes your character on that monomyth tale with a nice twist. Its not really a complete story i feel without going into baldurs gate 2 and its expansion but more of a first book in a series kind of way. Theres definitely nice resolution but leaves even a big gaping question about the protaganist.
I could go on forever but lets just say, it does its story a lot better than DA:0
