Blackest Night DLC Adds Zombies To Injustice: Gods Among Us

The Blackest Night DLC for NetherRealm Studios' upcoming DC Comics fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us serves as both a handy comic book tie-in and an excuse to add zombies to the game.

Zombies have been over since well before the Call of Duty games dropped a bunch of dumb AI spawns into a small area and called it a brand new game mode. Yet people keep clambering for more rotting corpses, so who are game developers to deny them the sweet, clammy embrace of the ambulatory dead?

That's how we segue into an explanation of why Batman is suddenly a zombie in the trailer above. The video comes from Amazon's German wing, where the Blackest Night DLC is now listed [http://www.amazon.de/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_173363467_3?ie=UTF8&docId=1000701743&pf_rd_m=A3JWKAKR8XB7XF&pf_rd_s=hero-quick-promo&pf_rd_r=05R6C4510BCN6AM419QX&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=378391767&pf_rd_i=B009V9NAY4] as a pre-order incentive for those deutschlanders willing to drop €95 on the Injustice: Gods Among Us Collector's Edition package. While the clip is in German, you don't need to speak the language to see what you'd be getting from this DLC: new, undead costumes for each of the game's characters, as well as some kind of special new gameplay mode directly linked to the undead theme.

Okay, so you're vaguely interested and clinging to the idea that this DLC will eventually be released in English. The good news is that it almost certainly will, but that doesn't really answer the question of why NetherRealm has decided that its videogame about Superman punching Catwoman into the stratosphere needed zombies. Fortunately, that's a surprisingly easy question.

In 2009 DC Comics ran a big comic book event dubbed "Blackest Night." You don't need all the details (but can find them on the DC Comics Database [http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Blackest_Night]), as the important bits boil down to "the death-obsessed Black Lanterns emerged, a ton of people died, were resurrected in zombie-esque form, and at the end of the series the status quo was basically restored." The event fleshed out the concept of the Black Lanterns (think: Green Lantern but really morbid), and even momentarily gave Batman a set of superpowers that could best be described as "Christ-like," but in the end the only thing anyone really remembers about the event is that it featured a bunch of superhero zombies. Hence the DLC and the new costumes.

As for when/if the Blackest Night DLC might make its way out of Germany, that's still unclear. We're positive it will happen, as it makes absolutely no sense for NetherRealm Studios to build this DLC with only the German market in mind, but until we hear something official, we just don't know if it will be winging its way across the Atlantic. Injustice: Gods Among Us is slated to hit store shelves on April 16, so hopefully we'll know more by then.

Batman never got any powers during Blackest Night, mainly because he was still "dead" from Final Crisis. They had a zombie in the suit, so I guess that counts? I dunno, comics are weird! :p

So...what was that Yellow Lantern suit he got in Arkham City as one of his alternate costumes? *suspect I will actually need to read up on Darkest Night now*

For once DC continuity is holding true to form: Nobody stays dead in that damn universe!
Blackest Night was an attempt to actually explain the whole nobody-stays-dead thing while also having a sweet excuse to draw everyone in zombie form. To sum it up, a bad guy named Necron (who's basically the grim reaper of the DC universe) was allowing everyone to come back to life on purpose, so he could turn them all into his super-powered zombie slaves.

That was a bit of a joke. At the start of the event Sinestro Corp War, which took place before Blackest Night, the whole reason Green Lantern found out about the yellow rings was because they tried to recruit Batman. It was because he "had the ability to instill great fear".

OT: So it's a costume pack for the most part. I did like Blackest Night, so I guess they could have chosen a worse theme.

C'mon guys, don't announce DLC before release. I mean, at least this is a pre-order incentive, but call it that rather than straight up DLC.

What is it with games these days and zombies, even in games that originally didn't have them, (Call of Duty, Yakuza, Red Dead, ect.) I'm sick of it! I know that this is based on a story arc from the comics but still...

Yeah, it's time for something new. Demonic possession? Alien mind-control? Just plain villiany? Something other than zombie-everything. At this point, I'm waiting for Nickelodeon to start Zombie Dora.

Didn't Batman only get those "christ-like" powers when he was momentarily turned into the White Lantern in Brightest Day?

I haven't read the issue itself but from what I understand it happened in an issue of something that tied in to the (then upcoming) Sinestro corps war storyline. It was mentioned briefly at the begin in of that comic and he was able to shake the ring off. I believe that there may be an elseworlds comic that also has a Sinestro corps Batman.

If this was to be included on a seperate disc then it would be an instant preorder. I mean, you can play as Grundy, one of my favourite characters ever.

Sadly the fact that you have to download it means that I wouldn't be able to get it if I did. (slow internet)

The Blackest Night falls from the skies,
The darkness grows as all light dies,
We crave your hearts and your demise,
By my black hand, the dead shall rise!

If it were just skins it would have been fine. Adding a game mode that you need to pay for to play, even if you have purchased the full version, crosses the line into bad business practice.

A zombie Soloman Grundy? Double Negative?
I'm glad I'm not the only person who raised an eyebrow when they showed Solomon Grundy in this promo.

Hopefully this one will make its way to the US soon and hopefully it won't exclude the Wii U. The teaser seemed to show the box art for 360 and PS3 versions which also got me to raise an eyebrow...it's one thing that Wii U owners can't get a CE but come on...digital content should be doable!

A few issues before bats got his yellow ring Hal Jordan tried to recruit Batman to become a GL. Noting that his will was greater than anyone else's. Bats tried on the green ring but rejected it saying his place was protecting Gotham City not flying around space doing GL stuff. Then as Sinestro was gearing up his Yellow Corps one ring found Batman and went onto his finger. He struggled a bit and the ring said something like, "The subject 's willpower outweighs his fear, Subject has been tainted by the power of a green ring." then flew away to amon sur.
