Blizzard Team Shooter Overwatch Releasing May 24

Open Beta announced for all platforms.

Blizzard has announced a launch date for first-person shooter Overwatch, which will be available May 24 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The developer will also be holding an open beta period May 5-9, offering the full range of playable characters and maps in the launch release on all three platforms.

Customers who pre-order the game by April 29 will get to play the beta with a friend two days earlier than the common rabble.

Announced at BlizzCon in 2014, Overwatch will offer squad-based combat for 12 players, with 21 playable characters and three gameplay modes. The game is available in three editions, a standard version priced at $39.99, an "Origins Edition" featuring five additional character skins and add-on content for other Blizzard titles (including Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm and Diablo III), and a "Collector's Edition" containing all of the above, an art book, a soundtrack and a 12" statue of the character Soldier: 76.

I'm actually pretty excited about this game, particularly the business model in light of Battlefront. All maps and characters will be included with your purchase of the game so there won't be any division of the community based on that.

At least there's gonna be an open beta, so I (finally) have the opportunity to try it before I can decide whether or not the game is worth $40.

Nice, looking forward to finally playing it, it's probably my most anticipated game of the year.

Alright I divorce this game from being a Blizzard game at all. To me it tries to hard to appeal to the Modern Disney loving Crowd and people that hates "Realistic Shooters" like Call of Duty.

It just does not look Blizzard to me.

This is Blizzard:

But of course since it IS a Blizzard game its obviously going to be fun, because Blizzard has never made a BAD game yes even Diablo 3 was not that BAD.

Current day Diablo 3 is actually quite good, imo.

Astronomically so the Reaper of Souls Xpac did wonders to it.

And it made me happy that I finally got my preferred class, The Crusader.

I always tend play the traditional Warrior-Knight in Armor with Shield and Sword in hand in Fantasy RPGs

Barbarian is too savage for my taste.

Wasn't this coming out in June/July once? Not that I'm complaining. But as it's now releasing in the same month as Doom, well, that will be interesting. Old guard vs. the new guard and all that.

That's not even including Lost Vikings 2, Hearthstone, or Heroes of the Storm. But, yeah. Overwatch looks a lot like a Blizzard game to me, given its styalized aesthetic that WoW popularized, and the humor that's been present in almost all of their games to various extents. But frankly, the idea of something not looking like a "x" game/book/comic/movie/whatever is one I wish people would drop, at least when x refers to the developer/publisher/writer/whatever (and sometimes even the series itself).

Oh, and Blizzard did make a bad game once. It was called Justice League Task Force. :p

The thing is its art style is clearly copied from Disney's Art Style. I would not mind if they just used their own Original "Blizz-Like" Style. This is not Blizz-like to me. Heroes of the Storm still has their Heroes faithfully portrayed at times (Despite Candy Muradin and Lumberjack Uther)

Hearthstone at times is just an extremely cartoony Warcraft, as if Warcraft was not Cartoony and Stylized enough.

Also those games you mentioned in the links, Thats OLD Blizzard, As in Pre-Diablo 1 Blizzard. Infact I seperate Blizzard into distinct Eras:

Primordial Blizzard: The Lost Vikings > other games > Warcraft 2

Classic Dark and Edgy Blizzard: Diablo 1 > Starcraft 1 > Diablo 2

"World of Warcraft" era Blizzard: Warcraft 3 > World of Warcraft > The Burning Crusade > Wrath of the Lich King

Modern Blizzard: Starcraft II Wings of Liberty > Today.

I really don't see any of Disney in Overwatch. Unless Disney suddenly gained a monopoly on CGI, that seems tenuous at best. Maybe Pixar, but again, hardly distinct. Also, if anything, if we're bringing Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, etc. into this, most of their "styles" usually revolve around the content of the works rather than the manner of presentation. And in recent times, they've differed from their norms (Wreck-it Ralph, How to Train Your Dragon) and been lauded for it, even if it wasn't the first time for them to do so (e.g. The Black Cauldron, or early Dreamworks stuff like Prince of Egypt, before their norm was established).

So, going by your eras. It's not how I'd group them myself, but fine, let's work with them. The cartoon style you're protesting against is in two of those eras (Primordial and Modern), and arguably the World of Warcraft era itself. That's 3/4, and considering that D1 and D2 were made by Blizzard North, the art style claim becomes iffy for the "Classic Dark and Edgy" (I like StarCraft and D1, but I can hardly call the art style of either game iconic, especially since StarCraft used 2D sprites and not well defined ones at that). So, the art style of Overwatch is entirely with precedent, and even if it wasn't, so what? Again, going by the above examples, I'll throw in another animation studio with Blue Sky, using the Peanuts Movie. Very different movie from their usual content, and a very different art style as well. Yet it's one of the best received movies they've done, and of all their movies of theirs I've seen, the best they've ever done.

The inability to get into the beta has pretty much killed the huge excitement I once felt for this game and I'm hugely cynical about it now. A year ago I was bouncing off the walls with hype but I'm incredibly picky about shooters and how the engine feels. So unless I get a good couple of weeks to mess about with it and optimise my settings to see if it'll feel right for me I just flat out can't afford to take the risk of buying it; because there's a good chance I'll never like it if it doesn't 'click' for me.

What pisses me off is the usual beta thing of people I know that have no interest in the game getting an invite and they play it once, if at all, while I'm here chomping at the bit ready to play.

I was originally dying to play it. I put hundreds upon hundreds of hours into TF2 back in the day before it jumped the shark. Been waiting years for a worthy successor.

But I got TF2 because I wanted Portal. It was just a happy coincidence that I loved TF2 as well. Here if I don't like the game then its a total waste. I really want some time with it to make a decision on purchasing...

I watched all three back to back and...I'm really not seeing it. If anything, it shows as many differences between Big Hero 6 and Wreck-it Ralph as Overwatch has from the other two. As far as animation goes, Overwatch has the 2D animation segments, and in its 3D section, has defined models with slick, fast-paced movement. Wreck-it Ralph has the pixel thing going for it and its models look slightly less defined, a bit more abstract and weighty, and a lot more 'gamey' (course its context helps with that). Big Hero 6...can't really say there's anything particuarly noticable about its animation.

Now, maybe an animation student could point out more similarities and differences, but, yeah, can't see anything overly similar between them in regards to animation. It's also noticable that you choose two Disney films that are as close to Overwatch as possible in terms of content, setting, etc., to make your point, as opposed to, say, Zootopia. If we're discussing narrative, themes, context, etc., that becomes a far more interesting conversation, but even then I don't think you'd find any specific similarities between the above examples.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZbzbC9285I

That's the trailer for The Incredibles. A Pixar rather than Disney film. Also, again, that distinguishes itself from the others mentioned on this list so far in terms of animation, in that the human facial structure is more angular (akin to Toy Story) and there's a more...down to earth feel, I suppose, in regards to its setting? Compare The Incredibles to Big Hero Six, and you'll see the differences immediately. It also bears mention that The Incredibles was made over a decade ago, and technology has changed since that time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBsg00NnzGg

This is the trailer for Bolt. Haven't seen the film (similar to BH6 and WIR while we're on the subject), and again, I really don't see any animation similarities. If I had to comment on the animation in the film itself, it looks a bit dated, that weird in-between phase between Toy Story (where Pixar hadn't nailed down animating human characters yet) and the 2010s examples. It's also distinguished in that it focuses on animals rather than humans, but even Penny is a long way off from the Overwatch kids. Also getting some Oliver and Company vibes, but haven't seen that movie in full, so can't really comment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S396-fnLldk

And there's Meet the Robinsons which DEAR GOD MY EYES!

Nah, it's not that bad, but from an animation standpoint, it seems to be back even further in the timeline than Bolt, like we have the beginnings of 3D animation, but a lot of 2D feeling (e.g. the backgrounds). Also getting a bit of The Princess and the Frog (moustached guy and frog) and Tomorrowland (the actual location), but when you compare it to 2010s animation, the technology's clearly progressed. If anything, I'm getting a slight Robots vibe, but that's more due to setting and characters. And even that example undercuts the idea of a unified animation style for Blue Sky, when you compare this:

to this

So, yeah. This has been interesting, because if anything, it shows how CG animation has changed over the past decade. But claiming that Overwatch is identical to the films listed so far is not only selling Overwatch short, but selling those films short as well.

Wasn't this coming out in June/July once? Not that I'm complaining. But as it's now releasing in the same month as Doom, well, that will be interesting. Old guard vs. the new guard and all that.

Y'know what was also from Blizzard?

I really don't see any of Disney in Overwatch.
Really?

Overwatch Cinematic Trailer:

Modern Disney movies (perticularly Big Hero Six and Wreck it Ralph)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IdMPpKMdcc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87E6N7ToCxs

The thing is I could have sited more examples: The Increadibles, Meet the Robinsons, Bolt, and others.

Well I don't know what to tell you, because regardless of setting, context, etc the human models in Overwatch, perticularly Tracer, looks very Disney-like like to me. And I am talking about "Art and look" not animation.

And I am not alone because of LOT of the commenters on the youtube video of the cinematic says it looks like Disney anyway.
