Blizzard: We're "Very Serious" About Diablo III On Consoles

Blizzard is officially looking to hire folks for a console port of Diablo III, but it won't officially announce a console version of the game.

Over the past year, the rumor that Diablo III is coming to consoles has been drifting slowly into the realm of facts. <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105308-Update-Blizzard-Exploring-Diablo-Related-Concepts-for-Consoles>Back in November, the developer admitted that it was considering bringing the game to consoles. <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110642-Blizzard-Recruiting-PS3-Specialist-for-Diablo-III>Then, in June, a job posting specifically mentioned that the Diablo III team was working with PS3 game code. Now, Blizzard's admitted that it's "very, very serious about bringing the Diablo 3 experience to the console."

Lead designer Josh Mosqueira, speaking at a Gamescom press conference, all but confirmed that the port is going to happen, though the official words didn't come out of his mouth. Instead, he made the previous statement and then said that a team is being recruited to potentially port the game to consoles:

"Today, we're trying to build the best console team at Blizzard. We're looking for programmers, designers, artists who think their dream job would be to bring Diablo to the console. Trust me, it is a dream job.

"All I can say is it's going to be awesome. Stay tuned."

Of course, Blizzard probably won't officially announce the game on any console system until the project is officially under way and it's happy with how things are progressing. That said, gamers should look at the game's overall progress with "glass half full" perspective: it's expected that an open beta for the PC version is due to start before the end of September.

well in the long run, that's just more exposure and profit for them, so i'm not surprised by this at all, regardless if the game is able to keep up with it's pc counterpart.

i'm sure it'll sell decent enough, if not blizzard will come up with some super deal to bundle it with another game to get everyone hooked on the drug that is diablo

I'm looking forward to it because I don't have the money to buy a gaming PC. Hopefully, this doesn't degrade the quality of the PC version.

Uhhh... yay for consoles?.

Don't hold your breath just yet, this is Blizzard we're talking about, even if the console version is real, it'd be ready "when it's done" and we all know what it means.

I think Diablo 3 is slowly leaning towards the 'suck' end of the spectrum the more I hear about it. Especially if it follows the trend of Starcraft 2. Of course, this would have nothing to do with it being on console. Diablo was on the PSX.

As a person who played the hell out of Diablo on the Playstation, and Diablo II on the PC, I'll still be more than happy to pick this up on my PS3/PC when it comes out.

And Starcraft was on the N64.

Of course they're serious, the closed system they've set is perfect for console games.

I'm not holding my breath here...it would be nice if they got this thing off the ground but I'm worried that this may be the first console game that requires you to be online to play (ok ok, not really but still)

Yep, they're just trying to figure out how they'll muscle in their Real-$ Auction House system into the console port most likely. And just like the Always-On DRM, that will NEVER make it to consoles, which is a good thing.
I could definitely see this being the biggest issue. There is no way MS is going to allow a cash market system in an Live enabled game so unless Blizzard goes PS3 exclusive it will take some work to make things work out.

The game itself will run perfectly fine. In fact, I'd the PSX version of Diablo 1 worked better on console than it did on the PC outside of the positively silly memory card requirement that it had.

I can see it coming to the PS3 exclusively because of what Sony did with Valve and Portal 2. Which is cool and all, but I feel that the Diablo series is one to be experienced by all.

That's all well and good,... but are they super serial?

OT: I wouldn't mind it, but I don't think I'd WANT to play a Diablo game on a console. Same reason I'd never want to play a LoZ title on PC. Just feels... iffy.

God........ dammit.

I just don't know what to say anymore. I really don't. I mean, woo yay consoles, whatever, but... that sort of thing doesn't seem like it would work that well. And I don't want to see things cocked up any more than they have been.
