In a worrying echo of Jan 6th 2021 in the USA, Brazilian right-wing extremists have assaulted Congress, the Supreme Court and Presidential Palace, breaking through the police cordon and vandalising buildings.

Bolsonaro lost the Brazilian presidential election last year to Ignacio Lula de Silva. There were concerns Bolsonaro might lead or encourage a coup should he be defeated: Bolsonaro publicly accepted that he would comply with the constitution and leave office in November, although did not explicitly concede defeat either.

He has allegedly fled Brazil and is looking for sanctuary somewhere he cannot be extradited, out of concern that he might be prosecuted over some of his actions during his term of office. He is currently believed to be in Florida, coincidentally, home to his old political ally Donald Trump.
