Easily the Four Kings, from Dark Souls.

Pretty much every other boss in that game was so well designed. Whenever I died, I felt like I could do better, I just hadn't been good enough on my last attempt. The four kings though... they were different. I know some people had no issue with them, but the way I built my character made them a nightmare.

In addition to making me nauseous as all hell while fighting them (the abyss was cool, but the eye-fuckery it caused was horrible), I never felt like I could do better, or change my strategy at all. I was limited to one single way of fighting them, and could only win if they chose not to screw me over with a ridiculous chain of abilities.

I love Dark Souls, but I sincerely hope DS2 does not have a boss similar to those assholes.

Deep breaths, deep breaths. Put it down for a minute and take a break. Calm? Composed? Try again, and repeat the earlier instructions in about 5 minutes.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!!! It would be so much kinder if it just up and kills you BUT NO!

Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts in general. I couldn't tell you which version is the most difficult, if KH1 or KH2. I got my ass handed to me on both occations until I figured out a way to win the fight. It's possible KH2's is easier because Sora I feel is generally more powerful in that game.
I considered myself 100% done with the first Kingdom Hearts after I finally beat Sephiroth. Granted, this is after I beat the main, final-boss...20 extra levels worth of grinding and I started to finally HURT Sephiroth...that was probably the most difficult boss fight I beat outside of various NES bosses.

I did the EXACT same thing... only I knew how to switch beforehand (choose not to, even though I was playing the whole game blind) and, at the time, I had more trust with the knife than I do now...

OT: I was going to answer this with every single optional boss battle in any "post-story"-like Kingdom Hearts game... Now, I only say that to optional boss battles (excluding Final Mix) that aren't the Ice Titan, Kurt Zisa, Phantom, Sephiroth (especially in 2), Vanitas Remnant, and Julius... (and that goes for any difficulty setting...)

I still do not like trying to beat Mysterious Figure in Birth By Sleep... especially when you have to beat him with all three characters in the game to fully get that 100% completion in your overall journal... And after playing Final Mix, even with the nerfed Unknown boss, there's still that "luck BS" to factor in during the last few moments of the boss battle...

Soldier of Fortune: Payback.

The rest of the game was ridiculously easy, but the boss battles would be a complete vertical plane of difficulty. It's not because of sound tactics or anything, but for the typical lazy bullshit where the player is locked in a cutscene and catches a bad case of Incredibus Stupiditis. But the second reason for this difficulty spike? Read and weep about the boss that made me stop playing this game.

Ethan Wall. It was later in the game and every time I died, he would shout in a thick Irish accent "You Dumbass!" It grated on me really fast because I died a LOT in the course of this battle.

It takes place in a garage, completely enclosed. He's armed with a grenade launcher. It's a one-hit-kill weapon.

Armed with a machine gun, I do my best to shoot him and dodge his attacks. It's hard. Very hard (TWSS). I notice that I'm not killing him despite going through several magazines. Then I die. Then the game reloads, but I guess the programmers didn't think it was hard enough because half the time it reloads; he immediately jumps around a corner and instakills you before you can move.

So there I am, puzzled as to why he won't die, looking for other methods to kill him with. Eventually, I just gave up. I looked it up online with a video walkthrough and faqs, you ARE supposed to just shoot him. The developers just decided that you should die in one shot while he takes an INSANE amount of damage.

Every other enemy in the game dies in no more than three bullets.

As soon as I saw video of Extreme Mode Titan in FFXIV, I was like "Fuck that, NO, nope, no."

Titan HM is rough enough. I've only ever beaten hm once, and I was dead for the last 20%.

Final Boss from Bayonetta, mostly because of the damned camera angles.
Not to mention the fuckin' 'try to avoid all collisions with the planets' part. I hated that on hard so much. I have a broken ps3 controller and a dent in my bookcase because of it, ha ha!

Dunno if this counts, but the way the end boss arrived in Batman: Arkham City made me go "No... NO NO NO, NOT YOU!!"

There was also Mammoshka in Mario and Luigi: Dream Team. It seemed simple enough at first, until I realized that I might have been underleveled, considering I barely did damage to his weak spot and tended to get one-shot. I eventually caved and hit "Easy Mode" for some sweet vengeance. I regret nothing.

The first boss that made me stop trying is the final boss in Biometal. It has a lot of life, fires randomly constantly, has a long tail that can reach anywhere at any time (and can give a quick unpredictable swing), and if you die, the bosses life doubles. So I'll complete the second last stage and call it quits.

I can't be bothered with the final boss in Shadow of the Colossus. The first part is fine, but the second phase of reaching it's weak spot is absolutely tedious. It took me an hour to reach it the first time, not to mention the fact that it helps you is a stupid idea.

They were some of my most disappointing.

The Four Kings in Dark Souls.

The moment that I fell into that dark abyss and saw this weird, distorted shape flinging some dark magic at me I went all

I didn't even put up a fight, my character just (figuratively) curled up in a fetal position and died.

Oh, and a honorary mention to Ornstein and Smough, those two magnificent bastards.

Probably already said in this thread but Shao Kahn From MK9 I swear I almost broke my controller over that guy...

I did eventually beat him after figuring out a combo that the AI couldn't seem to decipher but still...

During my second playthrough in Dark Souls, I decided to do the DLC before hitting up the lord vessel bosses, summoned Sif against Manus because it was awesome. When I came to get the ring from Sif after, well, that new cutscene made me not want to finish that playthrough.

As for OH S**T moments I remember after beating smough and thinking that ornstein would be an easy pickoff since he was low health. Then he got huge got his health back and I was like, nope, I'm done.

Damn This was the first choice that popped in my head. *looks over at other SMT games* not like I don't have other options, Atlus gets off on the tears of its players after all.

I'll go with King Kenji from Shin Megami Tensei IV. Capable of inflicting like, 5 status ailments at once? on the whole party? Well, as Yahtzee once put it, "There is no middle finger big enough'

On the other hand... Shadow Mitsuo. goddamn is this guy a pain, especially if you let his shell get rebuilt more than once, or if he gets a lucky crit and starts flinging spells.
Oh, one more from Persona 4: the Contrarian King. That rampage does waay more damage than it should.

I recognize all those names except Julius, I'm guessing that's the secret boss from Kingdom Hearts 3D?

Just a simple "yes" or "no" will do, still haven't gotten around to playing it and I've managed to avoid all information beyond the initial trailers so far. ^_^

first of all, the dirt racer license in Gran Turismo 3 A Spec, 100 attempts later I'm still over the limit by, get this 0.03 seconds . . . seriously, 3/100ts of a second! WHAT THE FUCK!?

also, the boss fight against Joka in the original Klonoa, I've gotten past it once before . . . and I have no idea how, because now when I play it again I can't seem to get past him ever.

and let's not forget the spider from Orphan: Scion of Sorcery . . . even if you save it for your 3rd playthrough it still manages to be completely fucking impossible . . . the thing squirts out webs faster than you can get rid of them and it only ever gives you 2 characters that can use magic, and on the path with the spider boss you don't have a second character that uses magic! GRRRR!

also . . . and I think anyone who's ever played it will empathize, Nightmare from Metroid Fusion, hell the final boss is EASIER than Nightmare is because the final boss (all 3 phases of it) actually have formulas they use, (run left, swarm missile, jump at you, run right and screw attack, repeat) so you can react. Nightmare though . . . just flies all over the fucking screen randomly with NO telling if it'll do it that way again, and then shoots missiles ALSO with random timing!

Frankly, FUCK Nightmare right through his jagged metal face . . . . ow

Kanji in Persona 4. I just loaded up some cheats after trying many times to beat him.

I fucking hate turn-based RPGs at the best of times.

Yes...
Yes... However, unlike the other secret bosses like Sephiroth, this one's really thrown in just to be a secret boss battle without any hint as to why he's even a secret boss in the first place... And once you do find him and beat him, you'll know what I mean...

Anyway, hope you can get around to playing it soon... (I assume you know how crucial the story is in this game already...)

The first time I got hit with an X-Ray move from Shao Kahn in the new "Mortal Kombat" and it did 52% freakin' damage.

Dragon Slayer Ornstien and Executioner Smough from "Dark Souls". WHen I FINALLY managed to kill one, only to see the other one regenerate to full health and become more powerful, yeah, I said "fuck these guys!".

Alpha from Dead or Alive 4, just he fact that her basic throw can literally drain over 90 percent of your health is astonishingly cheap, not mention she has 3 combos 2 of which are 12 hit ones at least. And the fact that you have to watch her victory cutscene every time you lose and the n her intro scene right after that when you continue is just mind numbingly horrendous. Still a fun game though!
