Wow, this is absolutely fucking terrible! The scouts are about outdoor pursuits, not about gaming! Playing starcraft and studying internet organisations is not in keeping with what the scouts are about, it'd be like having a hiking trip at a LAN party.

I know we here have a tendancy to judge news as good or bad based on the proximity of the words 'gaming' and 'violence' but god damn this is atrocious! The scouts are one of the few organisations that attempts to get the youth of today to move and now this?!
My thoughts exactly.
I mean, I'm all for the kid doing it, but he shouldn't have gotten an Eagle Rank for writing a gaming manual.
He could have done it by himself, which is the exact opposite of the point of an Eagle Scout Project. It is supposed to show that you could rally people together and you had the leadership skills to successfully pull off a project for the betterment of a community.
Writing a how-to book doesn't show that you know how to do that.

Ah...
Now if only the Boy Scouts would stop discriminating against Atheists and the Homosexual Community.
Actually, most of the people I've met in Scouting were Atheist. And I've met quite a few homosexual scouts. I had no problem with them, and neither did anyone else.

If I remember correctly eagle scout projects need to help your community in some way and show off scout values, gaming sorta doesn't do that. This is a tad bit insulting to everyone who had to actually earn their eagle the hard way. I also think that gaming should not be a friken merit badge. Yeay for the scouts selling out in hopes to get more members.

For me, this is just a vague attempt to bolster their numbers. They know gamers are a hardcore and broad demographic, they are just trying to grab us and torture us in their camps..Nowaii.
Don't you feel that that is perhaps a slightly pessimistic view to take on it. Perhaps they are just wising up to something many other organisations need to wake up to; gaming is big bad and here to stay!

... althoguh you are probably right.

While I didn't mind the video game badge for cub scouts, I have to say that this is a terrible idea. The Eagle Project is supposed to be something to help the community, and I don't see how this will.[sub]Used to be in Boy Scouts and reached Life[/sub]

You should not take it too seriously, however, boy scouting camps always pressured upon outside door activities and such. Gaming was see as something non productive and waste of your time.

And NOW they suddenly award us for gaming? Makes you think no?
yes it does, hence my addition of "...although you are probably right."

To be clear:
I'd only fall under the Atheist category here...
Ever heard the expression, "Camp as a boy scout jamboree"? Yeah...

And here in the ACF, we get ranks for doing real things.

Seems to defeat the point of scouts, exploring and all that.
