Brink Dev Heaps Praise on Bethesda

Splash Damage's Paul Wedgwood says that despite investing plenty of cash in Brink, Bethesda isn't constantly peering over the developer's shoulder.

You might know Splash Damage best from its previous collaborations with id Software on Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Doom 3 and well as the Enemy Territory games. Class-based, multiplayer shooter Brink [http://www.amazon.com/Brink-Xbox-360/dp/B002DC8GKE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1282569814&sr=8-1] is the developer's first original IP, and founder Wedgwood says that its relationship with publisher Bethesda makes it easy to focus on making a good game.

Wedgwood said that Bethesda took a hand-off approach with the studio, allowing it to make its own decisions and be creative. He said that he didn't have the sense that Bethesda was "policing" Splash Damage's design intentions, or was going to try and tell the studio what it should or shouldn't do. "It's just about making a game where not only does the player not want a refund," he said. "But they're going to tell all their friends to go out and get it as well."

Wedgwood adds that this openness goes both ways, and that Splash Damage kept its doors open, so that anytime Bethesda did want to come and look at the game, it could. "I think as long as you have that very open relationship with a publisher then it tends to just lead to good things," he explained.

Brink comes out for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in Spring 2011.

I do like Bethesda... they're pretty cool guys.
tehy finance gaems and doesn't afraid of anything.

OT: Yeah, good for them. It's probably hard not to get involved heavily in something when you pour cash on it, but that just shows that they have a lot of faith in it. High hopes for Brink, indeed.

It's a shame Bethesda's own games like Fallout 3 and Oblivion have so many issues, but it's nice to know they treat people well.

"They did have two small demands though. We had to hire an animation team consisting entirely of rodents and we were contractually obliged to add at least 3000 potentially game-breaking bugs."

Yay! A company that ISN'T forcing its employees to rush a game with cuts! (I'm looking at you Lucas Arts. We all know what you did to KOTOR 2)

Well done Bethesda for not seeming to be corrupt and evil.

sounds good to me. The world would be much better off if more publishers took this approach.

I have always had a pretty good impression of Bethesda, especially back in the Morrowind days. Rumors (the wild, unsubstantiated sort) of a new Elder Scrolls title have me watching them very closely of late.

Elder Scrolls V. Elder Scrolls V. Elder Scrolls V. Please...

I think Brinkis looking quite good. Seems like the developer and the publisher is getting along which is always good.

Might get it if reviews are positive.

I love Bethesda.
Simple as that.
Oblivion, Fallout 3 soon to be New Vegas.

Also this game looks great, looks much more appealing than COD.

Well Bethesda is a developer themselves, so they must know how it feels to have a publisher watching all the time.

Glad to see they let Splash do what they want.

I think they do a good deal of beta testing, it's just that with the AI system they favor, the world becomes so complicated that it's impossible to find all the bugs

Bethesda is a cool guy, eh understands developers and doesn't afraid of money loss.

This gives me hope for Brink, I now am a firm believer that Splash Damage will not mess this up.
