Welcome to my second review of a free browser game on the Escapist. My first one can be found here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.196569-Browser-Game-Review-Bad-Boys#6337623], if you're interested.
So: Age of War 1. A strategy game made by MaxGames that I found on AddictingGames. I've decided to review it because the second one just came out, and I was reminded of the first and how awesome it was.
Age of War is a game with a simple premise: Use money earned by killing enemies to buy more troops to send out to kill more enemies (They auto-attack), thus getting more money to send more troops out. All the fighting takes place on a 2-D plane, I might add, between three types of troops: Melee, ranged, and heavy. Sometimes the heavy has a ranged attack, sometimes not.
[sup][sup]That 2-D plane I was talking about.[/sup][/sup]
You can buy turrets to put on your base to protect it when you're not sending out troops, which have three levels, all of which kick various amounts of ass. The first one is cheap, with a slower firing rate and weak projectiles, 2 is an improvement, and 3 is the best. If you have all of your turret-spots (Which have to be bought with in-game currency, which allow you to put more turrets on the base) with level three turrets on them, you don't have to lift a finger. You just let them do the work. Hell, I'm playing as I'm typing this and 4 turrets are doing all the work for me. When I go back to the tab with the game, I will most likely have an outrageous amount of money from all the dead enemies.
Now, from what I've said the game sounds pretty dull, regular, not worth the time it takes to review it. Just sounds like a simple strategy game.
But it's not. You see, the reason it's called "Age of War" and not "Boring Strategy Game of War" is because it's about war through the ages. Killing enemies doesn't just give you money, it gives you experience points, which are used for what they've always been used for; leveling up. You see that picture of the caveman fight above? That's level 1. Level 2 is the Middle Ages, 3 is the Italian Renaissance, 4 is the modern military, and 5, the final level, is space-marines. This makes the game a whole lot more amusing and varied, which is needed in a game to keep you interested enough to win.
Speaking of winning, you can decide how easy that is. There're easy, medium, hard, and impossible difficulty levels.
I'm going to split the remainder of the review up into five parts for each level, if you don't mind. Well, even if you did, I'll still do it.
Melee is a club-man, ranged is a guy with a slingshot, and heavy is a dinosaur-riding spear-man. The turrets are as follows: The rock slingshot, the egg automatic (Machine gun that shoots eggs), and the primitive catapult.
Oh, wait, the specials! Y'see, each level has a special move that goes across the battlefield as a last resort when you don't have money for troops and can't defend yourself with turrets. You just click a button and it kills most of the enemy troops. Caveman level's is the volcanic explosion, which sends down a lot of volcanic rock. It's not that accurate, though. Specials get better and better throughout the game.
The melee specialist is a swordsman (Duh), the ranged one is an archer, but with a crossbow, and the heavy is a horseman simply called 'knight'. The turrets of this level are the catapult, the fire catapult (Which shoot the medieval equivalent of frag-grenades), and, my personal favorite, the boiling oil. Boiling oil shoots slower, but it does the most damage and thus is the best of the bunch. The special is a flaming arrow attack.
[sup][sup][sup]-INSERT WITTY CAPTION HERE-[/sup][/sup][/sup]
Deulist, musketeer, and cannon-man are the melee, ranged, and heavy of this level. All of the turrets in this level are cannons, but they are slightly different. The first shoots fast but is weak, the second equalizes weakness and speed, and the third shoots the renaissance equivalent to frag-grenades. It appears that even before the Modern Army level there're grenade launchers.
Wait... There isn't even anything grenade-related where it should be! What happened, did some time traveler just steal them all and give them to people throughout the time/space continuum? I just find it a little bit strange...
The special isn't an attack at all, but more of a "buff", to put it in RPG player terms. It doesn't kill the enemies, it makes your troops stronger and heals them a bit. Pretty useful, but at the same time, not visibly useful at all. Hell, what I just called it is only my guess. I have nothing to base it on, I'm just figuring that's what it might be. It just puts a circle of light around them, really, so I have no idea what it's actually supposed to do.
The melee-guy is called a "Knife Infantry", which is pretty self explanatory, the ranged guy is just plain infantry, and the heavy troop is a tank. The turrets start at the single turret, to the rocket launcher, to the double turret machine gun deathfest. Seriously, four of those things can take out the heavy troop of the space marine level. Not even kidding.
The special is a carpet-bombing air-strike.
[sup][sup]Screw you, Italians! This is for stealing our grenades![/sup][/sup]
The melee troop is God's Blade, a big guy in space armor with a Final Fantasy giant sword. It has a red stripe going down it, making it 400% more awesome. The one with a gun is simply called blaster, who is basically just God's Blade, except scrawnier and with a gun. The heavy troop is a tank, again, but this time it floats, is black, and shoots laser-rockets. The space marine level is the only level with a fourth troop, who is simply and un-originally called Super Soldier. He's basically Blaster in white armor.
Having the 150,000 dollars to buy one, or possible two, means that you are about to win the game in about two seconds because the Super Soldier can single-handedly destroy an entire base, two tanks, and whatever else is in his way before dying. You know that Assassin's Creed 2 maneuver Yahtzee dubbed the "Oh, fuck this"? A Super Soldier is basically that in Age of War terms.
[sup][sup]A Super Soldier, about to fuck those two God's Blades' shit up.[/sup][/sup]
The turrets are the titanium shooter, which shoots green energy balls, the laser-cannon, which shoots red ones, and the ion-ray, which shoot blue energy balls. From this I have figured out the color hierarchy of green being the equivalent of peasants, red being nobility, and blue being the Royal Family.
Having four ion-rays on your base (Have I mentioned 4 is the max amount of turret-spots? Well, it is) means you can, as I said, write an entire review, then return to the game that will have amassed copious amounts of cash with which to buy three Super Soldiers which allow you to basically destroy the hell out of everything on the battlefield.
The special move is a satellite-beam that destroys all enemies in a short 1-second period.
I recommend the game to anyone who has time to waste and would like to see how boiling oil affects swordsmen. It's a solid 8.5, and you can find it here. [http://www.maxgames.com/game/age-of-war.html]
