Call of Duty: Black Ops Goes 3D

Call of Duty: Black Ops [http://www.amazon.com/Call-Duty-Black-Ops-Xbox-360/dp/B003JVKHEQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1286295246&sr=8-1] is bringing a new level of depth to the FPS genre with support for 3D displays on all three platforms.

The third dimension is all the rage these days, so it shouldn't be too surprising that Activision [http://www.activision.com] is jumping on that bandwagon with one of the year's most anticipated shooters. The publisher announced today that the game will be compatible with 3D displays using active shutter 3D glasses to deliver "true depth of field and an unprecedented level of immersion."

"Development of stereoscopic 3D began as an R&D project, but once we saw what the technology brought to the Call of Duty experience, what a great fit and how immersive it was, we knew that we had to develop it for Black Ops," said Treyarch [http://www.treyarch.com/] boss Mark Lamia.

The game will support 3D on consoles connected to 3D-enabled HDTVs and on PCs equipped with Nvidia's 3D Vision [http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-main.html] display technology, and can easily be switched to 2D for gamers who can't afford to buy enough funky 3D glasses for everyone. "We made sure the experience is seamless for gamers to use with a simple menu option to enable stereoscopic 3D or disable it at any time whether playing in the single player campaign, multiplayer or Zombies," Lamia added.

My interest in Black Ops is minimal but I have to admit that I'd really like to give it a try with the extra "D." I'm not so sure it will be "the definitive 3D game experience," as Activision predicts, but it might be cool; not cool enough to justify the purchase of a 3D television, obviously, but for those who already have one, maybe cool enough to tip the decision to buy the game. Call of Duty: Black Ops comes out on November 9 for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Wheeeeee....

Honestly don't care, although Call Of Duty might actually benefit from 3D.

Still, Black Ops is looking mighty fine.

Opening a menu to enable/disable 3D is not a seamless experience, technically. I can see the seams, they're right there !

Ahem...that aside, it's a bit arrogant to claim that Black Ops will allow an unprecedented level of immersion. Immersion is psychological, it varies from person to person. 3D may help, but it's not the be-all-end-all solution to immersion, and I'm sure some people will find it more distracting than immersive.

But, if I were a millionaire, I'd pick up a 3D screen to check this out, even if just out of curiosity or to show off to guests. Unfortunately I'm not so this feature doesn't apply to me. Oh well.

See? 360 can do 3D, they aren't behind the PS3 in that arena. It's like that guy said then, they just aren't making a big stink about it like Sony is because Sony also happens to be one of the guys selling the 3DTVs.

I refuse outright to buy any 3D TV's knowing full well in a few years time they will release glasses free versions making the current models obsolete. Then there is the fact i hate 3D.

I'm still on the fence about Black Ops. after MW2. But Activision, this isn't exactly helping... That being said, at least it's not completely shoved in one's face and mandatory to play. But 3D needs to die quickly before it gets out of hand.

When I played a 3D driving game at Eurogamer, my favourite part was that when you used the cockpit view, the interior gave off the impression of depth that made it look like the interior was real.

What gameplay mechanic is the CoD series famed for?

So maybe they might be able to pull this off well.

Wow, I'm, like, totally going to, like, buy this game, like, right now. /sarcasm

OT: I'm fine if they want to put 3D in a game, just as long as they don't expect it to be the deciding factor in whether or not I buy a game. Make the game interesting first, then add the 3D to "sweeten the deal". Not that it sweetens my deal mind; I doubt I'll own a 3D tv until I'm about 30.

The slogan should be: Not getting a big enough headache from playing video games to close to your TV? Then take a look at this!!

3D is a pointless gimmick to try and make going to the cinemas still worth it, and they've already brought out 3D TV's so its already an obsolete gimmick.
