Call of Duty: Ghosts' Alien Hunting "Extinction" Gamemode Leaked

Aliens are the new zombies.

Call of Duty 5 famously included the not-so-secret secret "Nazi zombies" mode, which, considering how tired the zombie genre is, was surprisingly well done. The trend continued with Black Ops and Black Ops II, but it now looks like even CoD has grown weary of the shambling undead. The "extinction" gamemode that everyone assumed would be Call of Duty: Ghosts' zombies mode, has actually turned out to be an alien hunting mode. Imgur user smtkz [http://imgur.com/a/FCK8Q] has leaked a series of screenshots showing us what we can expect of the new mode, which is reportedly unlocked by completing the first five missions of the campaign.

The aliens have a very "Zerg" feel about them, and from the looks of things, you'll play co-op and fight of waves of aliens that gradually increase in difficulty, much akin to the old survival mode of the original Aliens vs. Predator, horde mode in Gears of War or, if you will, that scene in Starship Troopers where they hold out against like a million bugs.

Players will pick between four classes: tank, weapon specialist, medic or engineer, and will have special abilities (such as medkits and portable turrets) that they can level up with "skill points" and cash collected while progressing through the game. From the screenshots, the object seems to be to destroy the enemy hive before being overrun.

This should certainly come as a nice little surprise to long-time fans of the series who were expecting yet another zombie mode, or Infinity Ward's signature "spec ops" mode. I've always been a fan of "horde mode" co-op, and extinction certainly looks like it would be fun to grab a bunch of buddies and see how long we can last.

I was hoping for a fish hunting game. I don't think they've really taken advantage of the crazy-advanced fish AI they developed just for this game.

Maybe they're fish aliens?

Resistance 2 had a very similar mode to this...It was really fun... No one seemed to care about that too much though.

I have never really liked Call of Duty, but this development has gotten my attention. Glad that they are actually trying to do something different, or at the very least swapping out the same tired Zombie Mode with something else for a change. But, I'm going to wait to see how this plays out over the coming months.

You're really original, I think you are the ONLY one to EVER make the fish joke. Keep up the originality!

*insert obligatory Aliens quote here*

Huh. I doubt they're going to deviate much from the CoD formula, but this mode might make the 40GB install requirement just more worth it.

I loved resistance 2 co-op mode, the fact they didn't put it in 3 made me not bother getting the game.
I can only hope this is anything like that.

Interesting, but no sale from me, at least not a new copy sell anyway. I never liked the COD zombie modes in the first place, but an aliens mode sounds a lot better to me. The squads mode sounded cool too, but again, I'm pretty much done with the series at this point anyway.

So your obligated to beat the dead horse? Good to know people have integrity.

I have the strangest feeling this mode exists because aliens are going to end up being involved in the campaign.

Especially since there's apparently now talk of this being the end of the Modern Warfare branch and moving the series in some kind of new direction afterwards. Plus Blops 2 was already moving in much more of a scifi direction and what I've seen of Ghosts so far feels like it's keeping up with that to a certain extent.

Might be an interesting move.

I was under the impression it was very well received, with some people still preferring to R3's multiplayer?

OT: Intriguing as this is it sounds like it would make more sense as a standalone DLC in the vein of Blood Dragon (Far Cry 3). I thought the zombie modes in previous CoD games were great and I had a lot of fun playing them with friends but it didn't change the fact that the main body of CoD didn't interest me at all so I never bought a copy of my own, just occasionally playing on friends' copies. If the whole survival side game is getting a revamp this seems like a great oppurtunity for it to be sold seperately. More money for the devs plus the many people that only want the survival game have the oppurtunity to actually buy it at a reasonable price.

So can we expect next game to be
Call of Duty: Not Halo: Seriously, Guys Those are Two Totally Different Games?

But in all seriousness- Battlezone
For fucks sake- only thing Activision doesn't own is the name "Battlezone" itself (it belongs to Atari, or belonged to- whatever status of Atari is right now)
If name is a problem, they can do what devs of NOLF did and name sequel Combat Commander (BZ2 had full name Battlezone2: Combat Commander)
For those who don't know Battlezone is FPRTS (basically imagine Halo, but with base and unit building)
Blast in multiplayer (it has Warcraft3 feel to me, where heroes are replaced by real people)
One of my most favorite game- sadly totally underrated :(
