Call of Duty: Ghosts is the Best-Selling Game on PS4 and Xbox One

Activision has announced that Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Ghosts is the game with the most sales on both the PS4 and Xbox One, though no official sales figures have been revealed.

Despite what critics say, it seems the Call of Duty juggernaut is still going strong. Yesterday, during its financial earnings call, Activision revealed that Call of Duty: Ghosts is the best-selling game on both Sony's PlayStation 4 and on Microsoft's Xbox One. This announcement covers both North America and Europe, though no official numbers have been revealed. According to Activision Publishing boss Eric Hirshberg, the shooter's accomplishment is "an important achievement as we establish Call of Duty as the first person action game of choice for the next-gen." If that wasn't impressive enough, the publisher also announced that CoD: Ghosts is also the second best-selling game in Europe and North America during the first quarter of 2014, with the top spot also nabbed by Activision with Skylanders Swap Force.

While some might argue that the pickings were a bit slim when it came to PS4 and Xbox One content, this is no small feat by Infinity Ward, as it managed to beat EA's Battlefield 4, and even Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag -- both considered heavyweight franchises that were also released on both consoles.

The next entry in the annual shooter will be called Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and is being developed by Sledgehammer Games for a PC, last-gen and current-gen release on November 4. In other Call of Duty news, Activision will be merging CoD: Ghosts developer with Neversoft (Tony Hawk Pro Skater series) to create a single "super studio." Is this news surprising at all to you or more importantly, does the game deserve all those sales? Given how much coin the publisher makes, it's no wonder it can afford to claims that Advanced Warfare will use brand-new tech that focuses on the PS4 and Xbox One [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/134252-Activision-to-Spend-500-Million-to-Develop-and-Market-Destiny] will translate to a better shooter.

Was Ghosts the one with the dog? Don't know, let's all act surprised, etc, that shooter fans are basically updating their subscription of the WoW equivalent of shooters.

And as said above, TONNES of competition. Whoo, yeah, no. They really dropped the ball this next 'gen', the game that's gotten the most of of my PS4 is lesser version of Warframe. So now I feel like giant asshole to my mother that went above and beyond to surprise me for Christmas, Sony why are you drop kicking my mother in the face with Infamous 'Hohum' Son?

Is that one of those with that upgrade program thing? If so I'd be curious to know how many were that.

Yea... not sure you can take much pride in a victory when you're practically the only contestant.

Best selling, but least creative of shooters due to lack of imagination and chock full of cliched nonsense.

Because, you know, both the PS4 and XBone have such HUGE catalogs of games...
Not to mention they're selling those games so well.

It is. So were several of the other "biggest" games on Xbone and PS4.

It's worth noting that the competition wasn't necessarily all that steep, and it's still at issue.

AC IV sold roughly 4 million less according to VG charts, and it was available on more systems. Its combined PS4/Xbone total was roughly 2.25 million, which still accounts for barely more than a quarter of sales.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is at 21 million overall with only about a seventh of that being Xbone4.

Now, this is physical sales, which means upgrades and digital are not included, but there's still a couple trends going on there. Battlefield 3 also saw a decline. It could be that digital sales are picking up the slack, but this level of digital sales are not being reported by the companies to their shareholders, which you'd think they'd be all over. But what do I know.

Buying one new 60$ COD a year would still not even come close to one year of WOW Subs. (Not disagreeing with your point, just pointing out something interesting you helped me realize. Fuck, I'm happy I dropped WOW four years ago. It was burning a hole in my wallet.)

OT: Because, you know, the PS4 and XB1 have such massive libraries of quality games available that this is such a wonderful accomplishment, amiright?

EDIT:

????? I though CODG and ACIV both came for the same number of systems? Or rather, they came out for ALL the systems. PS3, Xbox 360, XB1, PS4, PC, and both for the Wii U even?

I mean, both PC Ports were atrocious, but still. Pretty sure they came out for the same number of systems. Unless you're comparing ACIV to ACIII, in which case you may ignore this comment.

Hey! At least Ass Creed 4 could maintain 30fps on an Nvidia card despite tanking horribly ona nything AMD.

Ghosts couldn't even manage that.

My what a huge backlog they seem to have going for them at this moment in time, shame there's like next to no positive Wii U news on here though.

This is no surprise. Call of Duty does this all the time. However, the victory does ring a bit hollow when the competition is barely there.

And to answer the question, no, I don't think this game warrants these sales. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those people who hate Call of Duty just because it's Call of Duty (I enjoy the single player immensely), but this experience? This was way below standard. The campaign was a convoluted mess of follow the leader, and don't do anything unless we say so. I just did not have fun at all during any part of it. It was mind numbing--probably because Hesh just wouldn't shut up and kept putting words in my mouth. Ugh...

Hoping the next one goes back to the crazy dumb fun that was in the other single player ones. From what the trailer has shown, my hopes are raised.
