Wow, such innovation! You can play as a female...

There is also customizable soldiers because you know that's really important in an FPS game where you will never get to see your character only a few seconds after someone kills you.

This goes the same for being a female. You won't even notice it's a female unless they have chosen to not have a helmet and you attempt a knife kill.

Yeah, pretty pointless I must say.

Remember kids: dawgs before bitches.

Edit: It's kind of strange how this is apparently progressive now... Medal of Honor: Underground had <url=http://medalofhonor.wikia.com/wiki/Manon_Batiste>Manon Batiste as the player character back in 2000. They even put her on the box art <url=www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.395952-Naughty-Dog-Flat-Out-Refused-to-Change-Last-of-Us-Cover>without anyone throwing a fit!
I'll see your MOH: Underground and raise you a Perfect Dark, from the same year.

And this is old hat anyway. Goldeneye's default multiplayer player 1 and 2 way back in 1997 were Bond and Natalya... for some odd reason... and in Perfect Dark the default player 1 and 2 in multiplayer were both women.
I was speaking strictly in terms of military shooters; Perfect Dark and Goldeneye are hardly spunkgurgleweewees. :)

The better question is, will everyone who doesn't already have female chars go along.
Bad Company getting more company.
Team Fortress, the sister-slaughter.
Just imagine.

All of them are completely realistic in their depiction of soldiers, weapons and events.
Yes because Russia simultaneously sneak attack invading the United States while assaulting the entirety of Europe at the same time(Right after fighting a civil war with themselves) and being so successful in those invasions to the point that they occupy the White House is totalllllly realistic. 4 real bro.

Also people totally pull out laptops in firefights all the time to control predator drones. And heartbeat monitors are a thing that makes sense because it is realistic that you could detect someones pulse from 50 yards away.

Does this mean I can make my own character to play as? Even if its as simple as a preset model selection (like in say, Gears of War). Should copy Rainbow Six: Vegas and let us use custom avatars instead of randomly picked soldier A's.

In this you can make your own squad, choosing faces, helmets and body and even go Squad vs Squad.

So progressive /sarcasm.

I don't understand all the hooplah about this. So you can play as a girl, big deal. I could play as a female in Halo and L4D as well.

Holler at me when COD actually does something good/different/progressive/whatever.
This.

Hell even that bumbfuck of a game Colonial Marines had female Marines.

This is nothing new, like at all, no huge barrier has been broken.

No seriously, I mean this is the laziest possible approach to the issue
I'm fairly certain that your proposed approach of having players imagine on their own that the characters they're playing are female is an even lazier solution.
Just sayin'...

Isn't spunkgargleweewee specifically modern military shooters though? If so, Underground gets disqualified as well :p

I'd call this a tiny progressive step, and progressive only for the COD franchise mostly. This is a player skin after all, no one is going to look at a female soldier model and start considering both genders to be completely equal. After all how many guys play as female characters in MMOs and RPGS?

I'll give IW props for including this option given the large 'dudebro' community that makes the series financially successful. At least they're not only seeking to cater to them.

Now, if the single player campaign was solely through the eyes of a female soldier, then I'd really applaud IW.

A major game franchising is finally recognize the other half of humanity! Truly, this is a groundbreaking, progressive step forward in this great year of 1996, that surely will make the entire industry more tolerant in the decades to come!

Christ, the cynicism and smugness here is so thick you can cut it with a knife.

If they didn't add female models, people would whine about how it's a "dudebro" game and misogynistic and blah blah.

They do add female models, and everyone whines about how it didn't happen fast enough.

Can't we just play games and enjoy ourselves without everything turning into this giant litmus test about whether it's 'progressive' enough to meet our standards?
Don't forget the third step:
After they add women, people complain that it promotes violence against women and is mysogynistic. Then comics like this happen when it is pointed out that the game promotes violence against everyone:

And the cycle of fun continues.

Out of sheer curiosity I spent the $6 on PSN and downloaded MoH: Underground. Holy crap...the controls. I don't mind the graphics, but shoulder buttons to strafe? Press 'X' to fire? And L2 to crouch lol. I'm not complaining, but these controls are so alien to me.

older games have done this to, and with out the 'LOOK AT US, LOOK, AT, US, WE'RE SO PROGRESSIVE!' story attached. congrtaz though, it's finally caught up with the likes of Perfect Dark, and Golden Eye
