Call of Duty Modern Warfare Impressions - It's no Modern Warfare

What the hell was the point of calling this year's Call of Duty "Modern Warfare"? Is it a remake of CoD4? Is it a continuation of the Modern Warfare saga?

Umm...no.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare (2019) is just another Call of Duty game. That's really all I can really say about it. If you like Call of Duty, then....here's another one for you I guess. If you want one.

The story is like every other Call of Duty, but that bloke from the other MW games is back. Captain Price is in this game, and you get to see him in....like three missions, so that's good if you like that guy.

I find myself confused. Why bring back Captain Price and hype him up like this is going to be a big banging dark CoD game? Then you play the game and he isn't even really around.

Another thing that kind of stinks is that I was waiting for the exciting moments that MW had in the first game. Like the cool ship mission that started to sink and tilt around you as you tried to escape. Or getting blasted by the nuke, and then crawl around until your eyes melt. Or any other awesome cool moments.

This year's Modern Warfare has none of that. I mean it tries, there are come moments that try to be exciting but none of them have that same impact as CoD4 had. Maybe I've just played too many of these games and I'm just too used to the big moments and therefore don't find them exciting anymore. Or Modern Warfare (2019) could just not be very good.

I mean it plays good, it's Call of Duty and it plays just as good as any other CoD so functionally the game is fine. But after they didn't even bother to give us a campaign last year, you'd think they'd try to do something crazy this year. Naw...it's just bog standard at best really.

However, the graphics and the facial animations are fucking amazing. Like it looks like a movie during cinematics. It is really really pretty. It's a shame then that there is a universal bug that causes the cinematic audio to play 1.5 seconds delayed from the animation so everything is out of sync and weird. But if the movies played like they were supposed too, man they'd be really cool looking. If a bit boring.

Basically guys. I'm saying the story sucks. And unless you haven't bought a CoD in a few years and you're overdue to play another one, don't bother with this one really.

Probably when it drops to $20. LIke all the other ones for like a decade I've bothered with.
Ironically I have a friend who works for Activision and got me a code for $20 bucks and I'd say that's about the right price for it.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
If it shows up on Steam I'll probably grab it eventually. But, it probably won't. I mean the height of the cod franchise was COD:MW, there were others that played better or had more interesting settings or more interesting toys or set better set pieces, or even enemies. But MW was the one that had good enough gameplay and a legit good story and was the first time most people had seen set pieces done that well. Even the other cod games that had potentially good stories kinda squandered them, like cod advanced warfare, you being part of a pmc is potentially pretty neat, but they messed it up by still trying to have a linear story with a set enemy force (before the obvious twist, I mean its Keven Spacey, course he turns on you) and not really playing with you just being hired and going off to where ever to kill who you had been hired too, which would have fit the kinda adhd area jumping around that cod loves to do.

It's really fun, but they need to drastically improve the server filter options. I've never been huge on Call of Duty; boggles my mind that a person would choose it over Battlefield (well, until Dice was able to display just how stupid and politically correct they want to be with Battlefield V).

Anyway, what made this Call of Duty different was the inclusion of 20 versus 20 and even more with Ground War. However, so far (and unlike the beta), there is no way to choose just 6 versus 6, 10 versus 10, or 20 versus 20. I've actually never gotten to play 20 versus 20 once, and with respect to 6 versus 6 and 10 versus 10, it's all dependent on the map. That's fine, but so far, there is no way to filter it so that you can choose to play exclusively 6 versus 6, 10 versus 10, or 20 versus 20. You queue up, and hope for the best. Don't know which idiot decided that that was the best choice, but it needs to change. People who just want 6 versus 6 are pissed because they are sometimes thrown into 10 versus 10, and people like me - who want to try 10 versus 10 (and 20 versus 20 if it even exists) - are also pissed because we can't filter just the one that we want.

Fortunately, Ground War can be selected itself.

Edit: you can now filter 10 versus 10.

I actually watched IGN's review of the single player, just to see whether it's still obvious that they're on Activision's payroll. And as suspected - it is THAT fuckin' obvious.

Don't remind me. I am still mad about the situation. The only good thing about it, is my gaming schedule is freed up a little and I can play Fallen Order in November.

Yep. I stopped trusting those assholes since 2006 when they "reviewed" God Hand. Even before that point, they would nick pick or exaggerate flaws about games that were actually still good. The 3/10 sealed their fate for me. I don't know why people still trust them at this point.

I'm amused I somehow started a reverse bidding war for MW.

Anyone for $20? No?

How about $14? $8?

Can I have $3.50?

Maybe I'm just getting overly sensitive as I approach old age (30), but I watched some footage of the single player campaign and I found some of what was depicted pretty affecting. Fighting in the aftermath of a suicide bombing in a major city full of terrified and injured people, civilians strapped into bomb vests, a Seal Team 6 style house raid complete with crying baby... I'll admit I was was a little uncomfortable.

It's skewing so closely to relatable, real world violence and I'm not sure Call of Duty is the best venue to be exploring that. I'm not saying they shouldn't be explored or even that I won't play the game at some point. All I'm saying is it made me feel things.

I will say that the suicide bombing mission isn't what it appears to be. There isn't a direct suicide bombing attack the way it appears, and the suicide bombers charge you and blow up like grenades when they die. It's not as impactful as the previews would make it appear.

As for the crying baby, yes that is there, but you are basically infiltrating a terriorists home because you know he has the evil plot bomb, and as a result you encounter a group of terriorist families, where even the woman are shooting at you with AK's. You never see the babies, though you do hear them cry.

None of it was really all that shocking and certainly not as dramatic as the previews made it seem.

I'll accept the most expensive collector's edition for its full price.

That might not seem like reverse bidding, but it is.

Maybe I'm just more sensitive than others. Now, you have played the game and I haven't, but everything I said in my first post was based on a walkthrough I was watching on youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzr2G6bi3D4&t=3811s A van is clearly detonated in a busy street (15:55) and the unarmed mother is holding a crying baby (viewable at 1:01:55). I imagine the circumstances might change based on players actions. Again, whether this affects the player emotionally at all is totally subjective. I typically don't mind violence in games, movies, etc. and I'm all for the good guys taking out terrorists (obviously) but still, for me it was a bit much.
