Count sheep.
I shit you not, it works damn good for me. I always thought it was bullshit, but it's amazing. Lay in bed, close your eyes, and count sheep until your out.
I find that only works if I imagine the sheep (or whatever image you care to count instead) wandering in from one side, jumping over a fence in the middle and landing to wander off the other side. If I just lay there counting with no other reference, it never works. I've decided that it's probably something to do with following the movement with my (closed) eyes, but of course that's pure speculation.

Slightly related: yay, 6:30am and I'm still at the computer. Since I have a completely empty day ahead of me, I'm probably going to stay up so that I can get my sleeping pattern synced up again. Been far too much "bed at 6am, up at 5pm" lately, which is no good at this time of year because it means I don't see daylight for days at a time.

I just go to sleep when I can. Depending on how tired I am I'll fall asleep very quickly or I'll lie there for a while doing nothing. But sleep always comes eventually, I just let it happen naturally on its own accord.

Considering I haven't slept for three days, I think my opinion might be a bit biased.

But you could put on a boring movie, one you have no interest in, and get all curled up in blankets. Warmth helps.

But they run the risk of making yourself dependant on sleeping pills to sleep, and thus you can't sleep if you don't take any...
So I wouldn't recommend them.
I don't think so, only the first sleeping medicine that was invented really made that noticeable. You can ask your doctor if you don't believe me. Other than that, you can try herbal sleeping pills, they work for some people.
Ah, is that so? I might be mistaken, then.
I was under the impression that they could be just like any other drug, where if you have too much of it or take them for too long you build up more of an immunity to it. Hence why some kids with ADHD are taking possibly lethal doses of meds just to focus for a little bit.

I could be wrong, but from what I've read in my various internet searches about insomnia, sleeping pills have the potential to become the only way a person can sleep.
Go ask your doctor, I am not a professional.

All I can tell you is that I used to take sleeping medicine and I never had that problem. I remember I asked my doctor about addiction and stuff like that but she said it was a thing of the past. If you anyone is seriously having trouble sleeping then they should try all the basic strategies like warm milk and then talking to your doctor a second priority.

Don't go to bed pissed off about something, just some general advice.

For me, I can't get to sleep without something to listen to, lately it's been some podcasts, stand up comedy or mellow Electronica like Massive Attack.

The thing I usually do is imagine a scenario. For eg: I might picture myself walking through a dense forest set in a fantasy world sorta thing. Like a fantasy adventurer etc etc. It's calming, (as long as you don't fight any wilderbeasts), and its fun =)

Dare I suggest... The Cure For Insomnia [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0284020/]?

Good luck getting through it all though, 87 hours could be a bit tedious.

If you're really desperate and don't care about keeping brain cells, getting into a headbutting fight with a wall does wonders.

But calming music helps if you don't want to risk brain damage.
Andy McKee(I think) has a bunch of pretty calm songs.
I suggest looking up Drifting.

Oh, and getting off of this site quickly also helps a lot.
If you don't, you will stay here until it's far too late.
before it's too late! RUN RUN BEFORE YOU HEAR THE CALL!!!..............

Why would you need to have any sort of orgasm to try and get to sleep?
If you can't sleep, then adjust your worldly timetable to adjust to your nocturnal sleep pattern. If you can't adjust your timetable (work, sleep, etc.) go to bed earlier, get off the computer WAY before going to bed and don't do things that stimulate mind and body such as exercise or watching television. Do something calming that relaxes the brain.
Also, (seriously, if I could put on an aggravated, exasperated tone here, I wouldn't because I'm not looking for an argument about this) is it actually scientifically proven or such that it induces any sort of sleep in any way?

Sigur Ros.

IT CANNOT FAIL!!

...

in the instance of Sigur Ros failing, try meditation. It really relaxes you, especially if you can get your hands on a guided meditation cd or mp3..

Surprisingly, I've fallen asleep while on the Escapist :p
Seeing as I have insomnia, it's uncommon, though. Generally, if I need to sleep (not a big fan, mind you) I generally read a book/listen to quiet music.

Yeah, yeah, Yahtzee Schmatzee.

Heh, I woulda said the same thing had I thought of it.

EDIT: I'd actually say like this: "You know who needs to go to sleep? You! Yes, you! The forum posters of the Escapist! Especially YOU, Adrian! Which probably isn't your name but it's fun to mess with the heads of all the Adrians in the world."

then get mad at myself.
then cry.

Sadly, I could use more tips for finding sleep than ever give any. I usually manage to doze off watching tv but then wake up a couple of hours later (tops) then spend the rest of the night trying to get back to sleep. I can't take sleep aids as I don't have enough time for an entire night's sleep to get full-use of pills. So, instead, I just lay there waiting for the slumber that'll seemingly never come.

just get a box of tissue some lotion and wait for the urges to come... or listen to some relaxing music my play list consists mostly of Gorillaz songs like Highway(Under Construction), El Manana, Last Living souls, Hong Kong, Mr. Softy's Balloon Race, Stop The Dams, Latin Simone(Que Pasa Contigo), Starshine, Clapper(Man Research), Sound Check(Gravity), New Genious(Brother), Double Bass, 19-2000, Kids With Guns, People, Slow Counrty, Re-Hash, and here comes the big one Tomorrow Comes Today, the bass line is hypnotizing it puts me to sleep almost instantly.

Edit: actually any music that has a heavy bass line will work as long as its not too loud or fast. or just play any of the songs I listed on Audio Surf with the color turned off that usually fucks me up pretty good...
