Also, it's not anime, but watch Avatar: The Last Airbender. The incredible show that the crappy movie was based on. It's truly amazing.
Oh! And this... 1000 times this!!

First I'm not the greatest fan of animes, mostly because of the art styles, but also because of the sometimes bat-shit weirdness.
Yet I have seen some very good ones, that managed to be amazing enough to make me wonder what else I might be missing?

Then I ask around some friends, specifiably telling what I've liked before only to wound up watching some effeminate boy whining about his high-school crush with his random pikachu side-kick and, oh yeah giant Mechas everywhere :(

Anyway this is what I?ve seen that I liked:

Best series I've seen so far would be Death Note up until the middle, then it went down hill fast!
Also Hellsing was pretty decent.
From movies I loved the two Ghost & the Shell films, Akira and the two Vampire Hunter D.
Perfect Blue was amazing, also Whisper of the Heart and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
I hate Anime in general, the only one I've been able to enjoy was Ninja scroll.
The genre as a whole is dying a death nowdays, which means a lot of poor quality (increasingly niche market wierd crap) stuff out there.

I'd have to say looking back at some older stuff would probably be your best bet.

What genre? Anime is just a medium.

check out Sekirei.
Even though it can get bland, it's a really good anime if you can stick with it to the end.

D.Gray-Man is amazing...unfortunately the anime was put on hold awhile ago and the manga publishes only one chapter once a month. But it's really good, a bit less of that really absurd stuff that happens in most anime.
Just don't watch the dub. The main antagonist sounds evil, which is not at all the intended sound (you'll understand if you watch the fansubbed version or read the manga) and they pronounce "akuma" in a way that makes me want to smash my headset.

Agreeing with this...anime is not a genre, it has genres within it.
And saying you hate anime is kind of just like saying you hate television in general, or movies in general, or comic books in general, or books in general, etc. There are a bunch of pretty bad ones, but there's no reason to say that almost all of them are bad.

[Edit]
Ooh, just remembered.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I didn't like the original anime that much, and I enjoyed the manga more, but Brotherhood is just like the manga was. And it's over, so no cliffhangers.

FullMetal Alchemist ( not sure i got that right)

Knights of the zodiac

Planet Survival ( dramatic, humorous, group and interpersonal relationships, hidden and dark, troubling secrets, all in a wild, unhabitated (by other humans) planet. what is not to like)

Watch Fooly Cooly. It's only 6 episodes, but it is just so....fantastic. It is just completely hilarious.

Another Comedy is Sekirei, which is basically pokemon, except the pokemon are women. That you catch by kissing them.

As everyone else has said before please, please watch Clannad. It is the best anime I think I've ever seen. And yes the After Story will make you cry, its just so good.

Also, to the person who said Jin-Roh earlier - did you genuinely like that movie? It was one of the worst things I've ever had the misfortune of spending time watching. Everyone to their own, I guess.
Are you sure we're talking about the same movie? The best animation of 1999?

Yeah ok, it had a slow pace and symbolism galore, but that's how all good animes are ;)

I would highly recommend Clannad. Because it's amazing. This isn't some crazy mecha or fantasy anime, it's a simple romance/drama/comedy. It may be weird trying to get used to some anime-style animations, gestures, and their general melodramatic style, but this is an absolutely beautiful anime that must be seen. I mean just check out the opening to the first episode.

And it will make you cry. Maybe not the first show, Clannad, but its sequel series/season, After Story, will absolutely without a doubt bring the tears. If you do not cry, you have no soul. This show broke me; I never cried in anything until this show insisted on tearing my heart and soul to pieces before slowly sewing it back together. It's amazing.
Do they have a dub for it? I dont mind reading subtitles but it always distracts me from whats on screens (and dubs can get bad which is irritating >.<)

OT: Have you ever heard of Shadow SKill? it was a really good movie but its a little old

All right then, since you're not a fan of weird, I'll give you the best I can do, with a short synopsis.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - A story about 2 brothers who tried to bring back their mother through a taboo, Human Transmutation, and were nearly killed by it. The younger, Al, loses his entire body. The older, Edward, 2 limbs. It's mainly about their journey to get their original bodies back, but then they slowly uncover a conspiracy, and that's all I'll say. If you like it, watch the original and count the differences (there are many)

Baccano! - Difficult to really describe, but it's mainly about 3 separate incidents and 3 mob families in the 30's that are all connected by certain characters, and their abilities. Seriously, any more than that and I've spoiled half the story. It's about slowly uncovering just what the hell happened. It's more interesting than it sounds, trust me.
Also, it has gore. LOOOOOTS of gore. (also, if you liked it, I'd check out Durarara!, as it's by the same people.)

Yu Yu Hakusho - This is an older one, about a kid who dies and is brought back a "spirit detective" bringing rouge spirits and ghosts that are in the living world back out. Has 3 arcs (technically 4, but it's a 2 bloody episode one). The plot grows GREATLY, and you'll care about most of the characters. It's also rather lengthy, with 116(?) episodes.

Welcome to the NHK - This is a borderline weird one, but only for a short while. It's about a social recluse who meets a girl, who wants to help him with his problem. Then you find out she has a quite a few "problems" of her own, and gets damned serious towards the end.

And finally, which has probably already been referenced MANY times, Code Geass.
Just watch it. If you liked Death Note (til it got boring-ish anyway) you'll like this.

Edit: I forgot to say Trigun! Well, you can look that one up on you're own, it's damn good in it's own rights, without getting into it's deeper plot, and Vash as a character.

List time!

Sekirei - Think Pokemon. But with an actual, good story. And tits. Lots of tits.

Witchblade - Anime based on an American comic. Also a good story with lots of tits. Also, if you, or anyone around you does not shed at least one tear during the last two episodes, they are a certifiable cold bastard.

Desert Punk - Gun porn with a story. Also one of the funniest main characters ever.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Crime solving, gun fighting, international intrigue, tanks that think and a sexy cyborg with a loose sense of modesty. Also has a second season called "2n GIG".

Witch Hunter Robin - A 15 year old witch is brought into a secret organization in order to hunt other witches in modern day Japan.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - The original "mind screw" anime. It has giant mechs, awkward moments out the ass and more philosophy than Confucius can shake a stick at. Extra fun if you're a Psychology major. Also they're redo-ing it for a new generation, so you can see it modern-ized as well.

Bleach - One of the longest animes EVER, but also interesting and fun to watch. Sometimes takes the cheese a little far though.

Mobile Suit Gundam - No matter what anyone else tells you, the best Gundams are the ones set in the "Universal Century", the original series. They include Mobile Suit Gundam, 08th MS Team, Stardust Memory, 0083 etc.
