Well, having not done any extensive research into the subject, I feel this audio-visual animation piece should help with regards to the question:

not really on the topic here but thanks I haven't not watched recess in years.
You know, I did the -exact- same thing in a thread about 'Tradition', when I posted a vid of the song 'Tradition' from Fiddler on the Roof to explain the concept, the point was missed.

Fair enough, the idea the video presents is (rather lamely) that Nerdiness is in the eye of the beholder, but more specifically it's not an attribute that is solely in the realm of those traditionally considered to follow nerdy pursuits.

Sports nerds exist, they're the guys who follow every match, can recite their favourite team's wins and losses by rote, have their walls plastered in memorabilia. And, in the sense the OP means, i.e. a nerd who is a jock, also exist.

Yeah, I know someone who's both. Plays basketball and works out, and is also completely obsessed with Naruto and World of Warcraft. So, a tasteless nerd, but a nerd. (zing!)

Are we that shallow?
Not everyone. I for one really dislike the labeling of individuals with certain appearances and interests.

Compartmentalization.

No point in it.

Life isn't that simple.

Depends on ones definition of nerd and jock. I consider myself a nerd. I also run varsity cross country.

Yes, most definitely yes. The nerdiest (I prefer geekiest) guy I know apart from myself (in my school) is a brilliant rugby (I'm English) player, he has something wrong with his heart as well which makes all of it ten times more impressive.

I think the lines of these 'groups' are getting more and more fuzzed. I know a bunch of people who are right into sports who play WoW and CoD, I play D&D and videogames as much as I can, but I still socialise and workout.

Its getting harder and harder to call people nerds and jocks, which isn't a bad thing.
Pretty much this.

I'm the same way. I have a diverse range of interest and things that I do, but I don't consider myself a 'nerd'. If someone wants to label me as such, they can feel free :>

That, is the pinnacle of awesome,
I strongly agree, I play soccer, rugby, cross country, among other sports, and still find time to play videogames, and read tolkein, and on rare occasion, LARP

The concepts are mutually exclusive, as in "Dammit, I'm a jock, not a nerd." Can a jock be nerdy? *raises hand* I'd say so. Can a self-identified jock be "a nerd"? No.

I dunno... can we stop putting labels on people?
This.

Labels are so... limiting. People should just bee what they want to be. That's what I am doing now. :3

Jock's free time is often focused entirely on sports, drinking, and dating that one really attractive girl in high school who must have self-esteem issues because he treats her like crap and I'm so much better for you Kaylin! Why won't you dump... sorry went off in another direction there.
but it takes an excess of time to be a nerd, between, not just watching but studying movies, playing RPGs, Adventure games, and anything but Madden and halo/call of duty, watching anime, reading comics/manga, and designing programs. you need A LOT of free time to be a nerd as well.
the two just can't really exist in the same person. A jock may enjoy anime or video games that aren't the two mentioned above but they can't obsess over them the way a nerd can no matter how hard they try.
At least we have conventions, raves, and movie parties or premiers where WE can find others with common interests, It's really the only way I've been able to make friends or find dates lately.

Does Vin Diesel count? He's quite athletic and muscular, but he's also quite nerdy and is very open about it.
