Can Kinect 2.0 See You Naked Through Your Clothes?

That's just a wrinkle in his jeans, you perv!

I hate to break it you, folks, but the Xbox One doesn't care about what's in your pants. Normally I would have said most people realize that, but apparently the folks at Microsoft feel they need to clarify the point in the wake of rumors suggesting the Xbox One Kinect can detect users' genitalia, even when they're wearing clothes.

The statement comes in the wake of a Xbox One Kinect demonstration video released last month, which raised some eyebrows after viewers claimed the sensor was picking the demonstrator's penis through his pants. In the video, Kinect developer Kareem Choudhry shows off all the details the second-generation Kinect can detect that the original can't, including a player's individual fingers, the movements of his facial features and - wait for it - the folds of his clothes. If you look at Mr. Choudry's pelvic region, there is a fold on his thigh that some viewers have asserted may be the outline of his junk.

In response to those claims, a Microsoft representative told IGN [http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/11/20/microsoft-kinect-cannot-see-through-clothing] that the image in question is merely a fold in Mr. Choudry's clothes and that, as powerful as the Kinect is, it cannot see through clothing.

"First, if you watch the video you will see that what is being represented here is a fold in the denim," said the Microsoft rep. "There is no tech magic going on here and Kinect cannot see through clothing. Furthermore, the video was an illustration of the various camera views available for the creation of games and apps. This view is only accessible on a development kit and is not viewable on retail consoles."

While the fold is positioned appropriately, it looks similar to the folds on other parts of his pants. It's a bit of a stretch, even by YouTube commenter standards. Besides, it may be controversial now, but you just know that's going to be a major selling point of the Kinect 3.

I'll be the first to admit that I dislike the whole idea of the Xbone, but... really? People honestly thought that this was a thing?
Jesus. They really are desperate to make shit up, huh?

That won't be available until their next firmware update. People have to be patient with their invasion of privacy. They can't record all of your personal information out of the box! Gosh!

The funniest thing is some of the comments on the YouTube video worrying about their Kinect being hacked by someone who wants to ogle at their body, because we all know hackers would rather go to the effort of obtaining rough grey 3D models of naked bodies rather than anything similar that could be found on the Internet with literally one click of a mouse...

I've not heard about this rumour before, and in all honesty I can't believe some people thought it to be true. However I will say I'm quite disappointed in it not being, It would have at least been a reason to buy the Xbone.

Was watching the video and thinking. Of course ambient light won't show up in IR because the light's not IR.

Granted, the tech for something like that does exist, but it would have to be constantly bombarding the room with dangerous amounts of x-rays. Like those backscatter machines they have at airports.

Eh. Apparently there are real websites featuring illegally taken upskirt cameraphone photos, despite the massive abundance of honest-to-God porn on the exact same Internet, and they've given law enforcement a pretty hard time. I guess some people just have a voyeurism fetish.

There's a fetish for everything... And I mean everything. Best not to think about it.

What can you say. Some people just didn't pay attention during science... Hence creationism.

Actually something like this has already been done with smart TVs with cameras. It turns out they're easily hacked and they've even figured out to disable the red light when the camera is on so it's not out of the question with the Kinect. It might be because some people get some kind of pleasure from it, but they also get to check out your place and see if it's worth breaking into and if there are someone home or not.

I don't know why people do these kinds of things, but people hack and abuse everything. People have hacked Japanese toilets for some reason.

The fact that people actually thought and believed that was a penis is face-palm worthy. Anything to throw more slag at a system, eh? Either people are being willingly deceptive, or they're incredibly gullible, or both. That's clearly a fold in his jeans - who the hell thought that was anything else with 100% conviction?

Wait wait wait wait...

You mean to tell me you can wear pants AND play games with Kinect? No wonder my family has been so irate.

"No no! Don't worry! The manditory camera we are making you have can't see your junk unless your naked."

When that's the good news about your product, there is a problem.

First of.... my apologies. I just can't believe I'm about to post this.....

Here's the thing: When I first saw this video, I didn't even see the "dong."

What I saw was...look at the beginning of the video when he jumps out... look closely..... I think those are balls.

I think the real takeaway from the video is that the Kinect goes up to 1080p while the console itself can only display games at 720. But hey, the visual fidelity of those Skype conversations is the truly integral component of the user experience, right?

Wait there is?
As far as I know it is impossible to check anyone without clothes
And no x-rays and other stuff like that doesn't count, since those check you bones, not your naked body
Any known tech reaches under skin, and has no visible color scheme when it does it

well there were those that hacked Laptop cameras to film woman masturbating and then sell it on the internets, so people always find a way to abuse cameras. Im so glad i know my cameras light is directly fed into the electricity feed and cannot be disabled software-side. so i can always know if somone is using it or not.

Well technically there are machines you could calibrate to see what is udner the clothes, though as you point out - no color and you would need to recalibrate it for each peice of cloth and for that you would need to know what exactly a person is wearing so thats practically impossible.

You're right about the lack of visible color scheme, but other than that British airports have been checking your junk for quite a while now.
