Can love flower in political war?

So a question has been bugging me. How easy or hard is it for a couple to ignore their political differences? Are there screaming matches between progressives and conservatives? Do catholics and communists have make-up sex (and is their any friction there on the premarital sex deal)? Or does the issue never come up because such polarised groups just never get themselves into a position so precarious as dating the enemy?
Please, tell me your stories.

Sask, you are a genius.

I've found that love can usually transcend most things, and that couples will invariably find a middle ground. However, the fighting is utterly spectacular.

I wouldn't know, to be honest. I've never discussed politics with a girlfriend, just because I don't usually discuss them, anyways.

Most people in the UK (who are not active members in a politica party) don't let politics affect them in a strong way, it is a very American thing to be honest (as in, Americans in general seem to care about things like that a lot more than other developed countries).

One of my best friends is a profound liberal and atheïst. For the last 5 years he has dated a woman who is conservative and catholic. They've had their differences and fights, even had some (short) breakups, but always ended up together again and are still going strong. They've learned to respect each others beliefs and most importantly, to compromise.
In three months, I'm expected to be his best man at their wedding.

hah, screaming matches no, but the sex is fucking AWESOME, best I've ever had by far. I've been in love with someone who could be considered a eugenics advocate among other things (the idea that some people are "better" then others and should rule as such), and that those who are lesser should be... ahem "controlled", oh yes and that the useless should be allowed to starve and die among other things... seriously. Ever seen scrooge say "decrease the surplus population"? That's about the size of it.

I've been seeing her on and off for 5 years now, but we only "dated" steady for two. It there friction? Totally, and it gets in the way a lot.

I for the record am closer to a communist myself, albeit a democratic Communism (yeah it's been done, and worked quite well oddly enough). Basically in a nutshell it's democracy without capitalism. (And communism without dictatorship). Sufficed to say I think the Gov should supply the basic necessities of life without exception to everyone in its care by law.

I would never bring politics into a relationship. Why spoil a good thing with needless argument?

Depends on who is playing the gruff old soldier and the nerd pissing himself in the locker while being attacked by a masochistic cyborg ninja.

I don't know, I expect the French would have a great deal of this kind of friction. Still residually Catholic, but practically the land of the existentialist, there's a lot of hard-leftism, but a lot of conservatism in some senses. And whatever they are, the French are opinionated.
...
You know what, I wanna go find a quasi-communist Frenchwoman to make my wife.

So she can nationalise you while you exploit her?
