Other than that...actually yes. The Tales series has managed a couple of times. Granted, one of those was crying in sheer horror (Tales of the Abyss).

On topic...I agree with the article quite strongly. If the game affects you well enough to start the waterworks, the game has definitely succeeded.
I'm curious as to what caused to to cry in horror at Tales of the Abyss. didn't feel anything remotely like that though I was sad at the end over Luke's decision. Only briefly though.
I'm only halfway through. I don't know what that decision is.

I'm talking about the post-Akzeriuth scene.

Watching that little boy sink to his death.

I cried tears of happiness at the end of Kingdom Hearts.
Yes. This. Goddammit, this x infinity.

Also, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 choked me up at the end. I knew it was coming, but... it was just done so well.

In other news, Tetsuya Nomura is a fucking genius.

Almost...ALMOST in CoD4's ending and the unnecessary twist of Ghost and Roach being burned alive...
MGS3 also made me feel...emotional.

But no, as things currently stand I haven't burst into tears over a video game...

...apart from when I somehow turned a 40-20 MW2 Rust game into a 48-57...

Damn you, Modern Warfare 2. Damn you.

i personally have not but they definitely can have such an effect on people less dead inside than me. they have, however, made me feel emotional. snake eater made me very angry and by the time i had to actually fight the boss, i was too depressed to want to fight her. final fantasy 10 made me feel like i was about to tear up. final fantasy 7 may have had the same effect, had i not already know aeris was going to die, years before i ever played it

I think it?s difficult to get emotionally wrapped up in a video game to the point of crying. Video games make you step outside your usual moral and humanity code, because I would feel really bad about shooting anyone in videogames when I?ve realized that I just made some virtual woman a widow. Asking if we?ve ever cried in a video games is like asking if we would cry after Wynona Rider?s character dies in Little Women just after we?ve murdered all her sisters with an AK-47.

Hmm... haven't played a game that ACTUALLY made me cry, but a few have come close. (i.e. on the verge of tears, but none actually come out)
MASSIVE SPOILER WARNING! (I would use the spoiler boxes, but I don't know how)

Silent Hill 2 comes to mind. The "Bad Ending" where James commits suicide.

For a more recent one, there was DA:O where, at the end when its up to you and Alistair to decide who should make the ultimate sacrifice (I obviously didn't do Morrigan's ritual). If I'm playing a male character, I just respect Alistair a bit more for it. But if I'm playing a female character and she and Alistair are "in love"... what? Are you telling me I'm the only one that gets into character when playing a very immersive single-player RPG? Anyway, when Alistair refuses to allow my character to die, kisses her, and then goes onto his death (by killing the Archdemon)... I came pretty damn close to crying there. I have to admit it, Bioware is the only developer that has ever gotten me to give a shit about in-game romances.

Another one was Half-Life 2. Before you start shouting at me, let me explain. This had nothing to do with the obvious storyline, this had to do with all of the little touches that displayed the Combine's cruelty. By the end of the game, I absolutely hated the Combine and Dr. Breen and was about to cry tears of rage when he had Freemon et al captive... and then we were freed... payback time.

The story of games can make me cry, for example
when Roach got burned alive in MW2

Not so much because of gameplay, I only get angry at gameplay
Might wanna put a spoiler tag on that.

OT: Some parts of Final Fantasy 8. Didn't make me cry, but it was kind of emotional.

Also, certain parts in MW2, and in Uncharted 2 when
I thought Elena was gonna die, but then she didn't and I was happy :)

Shed a tear or two or three at end of Fallout 3 as Ron 'fuck-mothering' Perlman was concluding my story thus far. Still images of my time in the capital wasteland being viewed through tear filled eyes. With the sudden line "War... War never changes" ending it. *sob*

I still tear a bit at the part in Call of Duty 4 when you need to rescue the Cobra Pilot. I'm like "NO ONE LEFT BEHIND!!!"

Mmm... closest I've probably come is the ending of Myst III: Exile, when

Savvedro salutes you from afar, when you open the outer shield for him, allowing him to return home. Jack Wall's soundtrack just nailed it. And Brad Dourif's performance, especially when he breaks down screaming after you trap him, is so powerful!

I haven't been made to cry yet by a video game, however there are occasions where I've come close:
* Two scenes near the end of Beyond Good and Evil.
* A particular scene involving Celes in FFVI
* The aforementioned scene from FFX (FFX also came close to making me cry in frustration several times)
* After a party member dies in Mass Effect, walking around the Normandy, with the music in the background, noting his/her abscence

four times I've ever teared up/got REALLY emotional in a video game:
aerith dying in FF7
the end of FF10
the entire last hour of shadow of the colossus
big boss in MGS4

never felt ashamed during any of those moments.
