It's not an across-the-board statement, you know. Just that the majority of the general Halo population wouldn't bother.
No, it's a complete load, plain and simple.

I know a lot of games, and none of them follow this pattern of liking one and exactly one kind of game. My group of friends literally went straight from playing Halo 2 to World of Warcraft when it came out. When we got bored of WoW after the last expansion, we started playing L4D. I don't see any evidence to assume that other players of those games are any shallower of human beings that they cannot have similarly varied interests. In fact, of all the gamers I know, not a single one is so narrow in his gaming choices.

Halo's not the sort of thing you can make an MMO from...the universe doesn't have nearly enough variety. I mean, you can include some new aliens, I guess, but if you go too far and start making up monsters and things, it's just going to be a science-fantasy MMO with 'Halo' on the front cover.
Have you read the books? Seen the documentaries of the Halo beta? Now I'm not trying to say here, "If you knew everything about the Halo universe, you'd know this was obvious!!1!," but I admit that I have, and I think if handled carefully, it could have been possible.
Looking at that screenshot of generic marine, though, I somehow doubt it.

Still, I kinda wish it had existed for the sole purpose of seeing the environments; I really love the visual style of the Halo series.
Did they have roaming heroes going on great adventures into completely random caves on completely random planets for glory or anything like that? I mean, that's the whole premise for an MMO, and the Halo universe really isn't something you can do that in...books or not.
The second Halo book centered almost exclusively on the events meant to have happened on the Halo of the first game; while the MC was off investigating the mysteries of Halo, the marines crashlanded there spent most of their time trying to find what they could in order to survive. Even in the game itself, the level 343 Guilty Spark occured because a small band of Marines were searching for a rumored weapons cache.
Not to mention, Bungie originally intended for there to be a lot of wildlife on Halo, both indifferent and hostile. That would make for half decent MMO fodder, at least.
...tu demonte, I surrender.

There's a big problem inherent in MMORPG's that have alot of FPS shtick in them. How will it work (let's not get to well, because we need baby steps)?

Ok, while they may be as much or maybe more people who like Halo then WoW, that does not translate to a popular Halo MMO. Many people who play Halo usually only like FTS games. Plus, I just can't imagine a Halo based MMO actually being good. Listen Bungie, stick with stuff you are actually good at like making FTS games and please don't torture us with another RTS (Halo Wars). BTW WoW is way better than Halo. Blizzard is progressively making the game better while Bungie has gone downhill since Halo 2, but I'm hoping that Halo:Reach will turn that around, but I'm doubtful of it.

P.S. I saw somebody asked if the rumored Halo MMO was going to be on the XBOX. I hoping it wasn't because Final Fantasy 8 (i think) has taught us that MMORPG's should never be played on a console.

I'm frankly shocked that I agree with the majority on this one. I was worried while I was reading the article that I was going to be a lone dissenter of this idea. Pretty much I guess that Halo Wars was about as close as you'd get to an RPG-ish version of the Halo world... I just can't see how it would work as an independent MMOG. Thankfully, we'll never have to see how they would have attempted to pull it off, either. As a WoW killer, I'd liken the idea to trying taking down a rogue elephant with a BB gun. Halo had strength behind the story, but no where near enough elements to spin off an MMO out of it. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe not. Now we'll never know. Come on, Hello Kitty MMOG!

There is no way in Hell that this would've killed WoW. Actually I don't expect it would have even been popular.

Halo is an FPS. Making FPS games into MMOs has so far met with very limited success. FPS gamers have huge expectations concerning graphics, insane gameplay, and the visceral in combat.

All of these have to be toned down from what has been seen, even in the original Halo, to work in an MMO context. So all of those expectations are shot down from the outset. Great swathes of the original fan base would never buy this, even if it were available on the 360.

Yes, the gigantic wallet of Microsoft would've helped with advertising. But even considering how much that would help, if this were to become even slightly more popular than, say, Aion, it would surprise me.

I honestly don't see the appeal here.

Alright, what are developers smoking these days and why aren't they sharing?

Am I the only one who is concerned about the part where some of the ideas for HALOMMO are being used for SWTOR? I am hoping it is just towards making the soldier class soldiery.

Psst, quit trying to kill WoW. It is a no-win scenario. Just come up with something different to compete with it. Let us gamers kill WoW if what you do works for us.

A Halo MMO? Cool, but not a WoW killer. Hell, it probably would not have even been considerable competition against it.

I could see the raids being fun, 13 years olds yelling abuse at each other. Toppling WoW is that even possible? The only thing this game would achieve is dropping the average age of MMO players significantly.

While the screenshot is decent, and I don't really know how the game would've played, how the hell do you make an MMO out of Halo? I mean, you have two rigid military factions: Covenant and Humans. Where's the room for individuals to go out on quests? To travel to planets by themselves and explore. I'm not an afficionado on Halo lore, but I don't think that there were too many individuals running around the galactic warzone.

Well the brand name would carry it for a while (the same sort of thing as if a COD MMOG was created), but it would eventually come down to whether or not there was enough content to keep people around. Assuming there was, the brand name would get enough people into it for it to compete against WoW.

And no, you can't kill WoW, you can only try.

I'm glad, Halo has been way over done. Halo 1 was alright, Halo 2 was pretty good, Halo 3 was awful... unfortunately, it just got worse from there
