Capcom Opening London Monster Hunter Center

Making good on their Monster Hunter Freedom Unite [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.105773][/I] play center in London this summer.

Monster Hunter is huge in Japan, not because hunting monsters and ripping out their organs to make armor and gigantic swords is something that has intrinsic appeal to the Japanese, but because over there they play the game the way it's meant to be played: with other people. See unlike us antisocial types in the West, getting together with other people and playing the game together locally is common practice, which is why the game only technically supports ad-hoc play.

Capcom wants Monster Hunter to be just as huge in the West, and to do that they'll have to show Western gamers how to play the game for real. So the company is going all out and opening a Monster Hunter drop-in center this summer in London: a three story building where gamers can congregate, hunt monsters and enjoy complimentary treats. It'll be open throughout July everyday until around 8 PM, at which point players can proceed to various public houses to continue their hunts in a drunken stupor.

I just hope Capcom US is willing to shell out the cash to make something like this happen in the States, maybe somewhere in San Francisco, please? I mean, it's not like they need to worry about homeless people stinking up the place and stealing all the candy and soda or anything.

I guess they do need to push awareness; I've never even heard of monster hunter and I'm in the U.S.

Or they could just give the Japanese developers a kick in the butt and get some proper online support for the series.

Wasn't this already possible via 3rd party softwares? I do remember that it was possible to play the PSP version of the game, via infrastructure, with the appropriate tools.

? Monster Hunter? Wasn't that a Sunday morning cartoon at some point? It had a thing that was an eyestalk that could teleport, and a pink thing that shot laser beams.

Yeah, it's doable via Xlink Kai, but it really should be built in.

I though it was a bug MMORPG until I looked it up... sounds like it could be one.

Edit:

Exactly. Not to knock on the third parties, but while the concept is nice, the game's actual multiplayer mode is not built for non-face to face gameplay.

I loved this game actually, I seen it for the PS2 when I started working at CD Depot for my girlfriend's friends.

I hooked up one of our PS2's, and tried it.

I rather enjoyed the concept, and the only thing that made me sad was that, were it brought to the next gen, with fresh graphics and better customization, it could well be the game that takes up the rest of my days and makes me forget about Final Fantasy XI, which I long for nearly daily.

Just the idea of going on a hunting party Safari style appeals to me, and with some of the battles from the PS2 game that I recall, next gen, XBOX LIVE and PLAYSTATION NETWORK play with friends would be amazing.

It'd make achievments a snap to make, as well.
