Capcom Producer Amazed Wright/Layton Crossover Went Ahead

Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney is a proper collaboration, says Capcom's Keiji Inafune, even if it was tricky getting it started.

The Phoenix Wright/Professor Layton crossover [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104508-Professor-Layton-Taking-On-Phoenix-Wright-In-New-Crossover] has a lot of people excited, even if it is only bound for Japan [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104551-Professor-Layton-Phoenix-Wright-Crossover-for-Japan-Only-Says-Capcom] at the moment. But Inafune is amazed that it even exists at all, saying that he thought it was going to be nearly impossible to get off the ground.

Speaking in an interview with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu [http://www.famitsu.com/], Inafune revealed that Capcom handled the Phoenix Wright franchise very carefully, and thought it would be incredibly hard to convince series director Shu Takumi that the idea of a crossover with Layton was worthwhile. Inafune gave all the credit for the the idea coming to fruition to Level-5's Akihiro Hino, saying that he came up with the initial concept - and later became the scenario writer for the project - and was able to persuade Takumi that it was something worth pursuing.

It also turns out that the "vs." in the Japanese title is more than just for show. Wright and Layton will face off against each other during the game, before eventually coming together to solve a really big case. Inafune thought that fans wanted to see both things happen, so Capcom and Level-5 had obliged.

This isn't going to be one company's interpretation of the other's character either. Inafune said that both Capcom and Level-5 were "fully involved" in the project. "It wasn't a case of licensing out the Phoenix Wright characters and demanding our license money," he explained. "That isn't collaboration, and users would see that. For this standalone game, we wanted to create a great history."

The more I read about it, the better it sounds. Which makes me all the more desperate for a stateside release.

DAMN YOU CAPCOM!!!

I would love a game like this, a collaboration is rare this days, I still remember Battletoads & Double Dragon, I'm looking forward to it.

Sooo... is this how Japan is going to fuel their sales? Don't get me wrong, I'm very excited for this game (I love both series) but if this and Street Fighter vs Tekken (or vice versa) are very successful, innovation will become cross-over madness.

It looks like Phoenix belongs in that picture more than the professor does.....lol.
This has made me even more excited for this game. I hope they don't disappoint with the voice acting. Phoenix has never had a voice other than "Hold it," "Objection," and "Take that." Maybe that's why they have reservations about a non-Japanese release. Maybe they're afraid that none other than Japanese actors can do it justice.

I'm guessing that last sentence was no pun intended?

Surely it can't be that hard. Just get the guy who recorded those three voice clips. He doesn't need to have the greatest voice in the world. As long as the guy who does it puts in the effort towards making it great, it should be fine.

At first I was wary about this, but the more I read, the more I want it right now goddamnit.

So long as Chris Miller and Maria Darling are going to be doing Layton and Luke's voices in Europe, I'm happy.

It shouldn't be hard to obtain the guy either. Phoenix's voice actor is Ben Judd, head of globalisation at Capcom Japan. :p That said, voice acting three clips is easy compared to voice acting entire dialogues. Considering Judd is not a professional voice actor, it might be a tough task for him.

Also, even if a voice actor for Phoenix himself isn't much of a problem, getting a voice actress for Maya is going to be a tougher challenge, since she hasn't needed one up till this point. The only time she had a voice was in a Japanese TGS trailer (I believe it was for Trials&Tribulations) and that voice actress is...well, Japanese.

Anyway, putting that topic aside, I wonder if we are going to see any other Ace Attorney characters in this game? Aside from a possible cameo at the beginning of the game, it is unlikely that we are going to see most of them since it seems only Phoenix and Maya were drawn into the magical realm (plus, plenty of characters have made an appearance in the Investigations games). That said, it is quite possible we might see Mia make an appearance. It would be a good way to utilise Maya's powers as a spirit medium. Plus, considering the two are going to find themselves in a unknown realm, Phoenix might need help of a spirit more than ever before.

How can they not release this worldwide? I will be seriously disappointed we don't get it.
