Captain America's Chris Evans Ready to Leave Acting for Directing

Chris Evans will finish his six-movie contract with Marvel as Captain America's titular superhero, but he doesn't see himself acting outside the Marvel universe.

Don't expect to see Chris Evans in future roles other than Captain America's titular superhero; Evans plans to leave his acting career in pursuit of directing, he told Variety.

Evans has three more films to do for a six-movie deal he signed on to do with Marvel [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132886-Chris-Evans-Signed-for-Six-Marvel-Films ]. He's said in the past that he is not as proactive about exploring acting jobs outside of the Marvel universe and enjoyed his first experience directing. Now Evans has told Variety that he wants to do more than take a break from acting after his contract with Marvel is finished; he wants to retire from being in front of the camera.

"I've known for a while I wanted to direct," Evans said. "But [time] never really opens up. There's another movie to do, there's another acting job. It just got to a point where I was like, you know what -- I have to do this."

Still, Evans is thankful for his superhero role. He gained world recognition as Captain America, which helped grant him an audience for his directing endeavors so far. Evans most recently directed 1:30 Train during his winter hiatus from Marvel.

When Marvel first approached Evans with the role, he turned it down. "The problem was initially, it was a nine-movie contract," he said. "And they said, if these movies take off and do very well, and my life changes and I don't respond well, I don't have the opportunity to say, listen, I need a fucking break. That just scared me."

Evans bets that he'll be finished being a superhero in 2017 - a year he said sounds so far away. He admits in five years he might miss acting, but for now he wants to be behind the camera.

I need to see more out of Evans. Aside from what I saw of him in Sunshine and Push, I haven't seen a film with his directorial touch yet to make a judgement call on his directing capabilities.

Still, he seems like a great guy, so I don't have any information to downplay his directing abilities.

But he's so pretty! Oh well, I'm sure the directing profession needs a few more hotties. Do they even have any besides Eli Roth?

2017 seems like a nice deadline too. Concidering how finicky the movie audiences can be, the Marvel craze might be over by then.

Noooooooooooooooooooo he's too dreamy to be behind the camera!
I haven't seen any of his directed movies though so I'll shut up now. Hopefully he's as a good director as he is actor.

Well, chase your dreams Chris, chase your dreams. He's an okay actor so we're not losing much for talent here. I wouldn't doubt that he's better behind the camera. Possibly, the new Ben Affleck. Which means Chris Evans will be the new Batman in 10 to 15 years. Right?

It's Ok, in 2017 they will offer him a truck full of money and the Director chair for "Pirates of the Caribean 10" and we'll have him for another 6 movies :p

Spoilers for 'The Winter Soldier':

Notice how he is only contracted for six films, whereas the guy playing Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier is contracted for 9. In the comics, Captain America dies and the Winter Soldier takes up the mantle, becoming the new Captain America.

Could this possibly be happening in the Cinematic universe too?

I wonder if his cameo in Thor 2 counts as one of his movie deals with Marvel. That means he's done 4 so far (First Avenger, The Avengers, Thor 2, Winter Soldier). Fifth would be Avengers 2... and I guess sixth is where they retire his character?

I wish him luck. It worked out well for Jonathan Frakes and Levar Burton.
And Clint Eastwood, Sidney Pollack, George Clooney, Ben Affleck...

Why else introduce the Winter Soldier this early. Calling it right now, Steve sacrifices himself heroically in the third Captain America film. Bucky then takes up the mantle of his friend to keep his spirit alive.

Funny, I was going to bring up Jonathan Frakes as well, but you beat me to the punch. Not everyone's got the aptitude to be a director (in fact, there are only a small handful of outstanding directors every generation), but everyone in Hollywood seems to think they're the Next Big Thing in the director's seat.

Personally, I hope that if Chris Evans follows through with this plan, he either turns out to be an astoundingly great director or such an astoundingly awful one that he's forced to go back to acting. At least since Not Another Teen Movie (see also Scott Pilgrim), that guy has had uncanny comic timing and delivery. If we're losing that to his directing he'd better be a damn good one. Hollywood is lousy with middling directors but far too short on legitimately talented actors who can play the 'pretty' roles.
