Cast your Final Fantasy VII film...

Thought I throw it out to the community after a long and heated debate with some friends...

You are a movie producer/director, and you are casting your forthcoming big-screen adaptation of Final Fantasy VII. Your budget is unlimited, and any actor/actress in the world will say yes to the role (must be alive & active currently). Who would you get to play;

Cloud
Sephiroth
Tifa
Aeris/Aerith
Barrett
Cid
Vincent
voice for Red XIII

and any others you can think of (we didn't cast Yuffie or Cait Sith because we collectively hate them).

So, what are your thoughts?




TL; DR - Cast the main people in an FF7 movie.

Cloud: Robert Pattinson, who else to play a young, blonde, emo guy? Though he was good as Cedric Diggory, so he does have that.
Sephiroth: the big-screen debut of Marilyn Manson
Tifa: Ellen Page comes to mind at first, as she's got something of the right look and she would probably be the right age, but I don't know if she could do action scenes. But I suppose that's what stunt doubles and CGI are for, right?
Aeris/Aerith: Zooey Deschanel... maybe? The women are tough to call.
Barrett: (the one, the only) Samuel L. Jackson
Cid: Nicolas Cage, or maybe Hugh Jackman
Vincent: Joseph Gordon-Levitt
voice for Red XIII: Ron Perlman

We are all entitled to our opinions, but that is exactly what this is and if you were to ask around you would probably find quite a large following for VII. So statistically it didn't ruin the series...

I agree with Toriver for pretty much the whole list, bar one actor. Nicholas Cge shouldn't be on that list

I would probably make sure that every role is hilariously miscast. For instance:

Cloud: Jack Nicholson
Sephiroth: Michael Cera
Tifa: Ted Levine (Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs)
Aeris: Nancy Cartwright
Barrett: Rob Schneider in blackface
Cid: Nic Cage (the one character I would want to see on the big screen. Excellent suggestion, Toriver!)
Vincent: Jack Black
Red XIII: The man/woman who does Pikachu's voice
EDIT: forgot about Cait Sith. I would cast Sylvester Stallone, in a papier maché mog costume.

Not sure about Ellen Page for Tifa, Page just looks to young. Sadly I cant come up with an alternative

Really? Whenever I played it, I never really got the feeling the characters were supposed to be Asian. I mean sure Yuffie would probably be Asian, but everyone else was different.

Since they're all from different parts of Midgar, I figure they'd have all sorts of looks and origins. I mean, in Advent Children they gave Cait Sith a Scottish accent in the English dub, if I remember correctly. Just because it came from Japan doesn't always mean all the characters were intended to be Japanese ;-)

Wow, some very cool thoughts there. It's really interesting to see how we all approach these people differently.
For instance, we originally had Red XIII in our heads as a Native American or European accent, something a little unusual and cultured; we were going to go for Liam Neeson until we realised our big cat-dog thing would sound like Aslan. We too only really saw Yuffie as explicitly Asian.

The girls we're still having some trouble with. I wanted Tilda Swinton as Aerith, they suggested Liv Tyler. We're leaning towards Natalie Portman for Tifa...
