Castlevania Movie Back from the Dead, Saw Creator Directing

The movie adaptation of Castlevania that seemed dead in the water months ago is apparently back in business with a new director and a new vision that actually doesn't sound that awful at all.

Some Castlevania fans probably breathed a sigh of relief when news broke a couple months ago that the long delayed Castlevania movie adaptation was supposedly dead in the water [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/91973-Castlevania-Movie-Dead-In-the-Water]. Now the project has escaped the fires of development hell and is back in business with a new man leading its direction.

Resident Evil movie director Paul W.S. Anderson is now in a producing role, while James Wan, one of the fellows who created the Saw franchise and the director of the first film, will be handling directorial duties for the flick. "I'm very fresh on this project, so its early stages and I'm still trying to work things out, but the producers love my vision for it," Wan told Bloody-Disgusting [http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/16838]. "I'll be working on the script with a writer to give it a new spin, different to the previous versions. This will have my stamp on it which Konami is very excited about."

Don't get too angry yet - Wan's description of his vision for the film actually sounds rather promising, or at least it does to me. "The thing I love about what Konami did with Castlevania, was taking the iconic Dracula mythology and Eastern-European setting, and retelling it with a Japanese pop-cultural sensibility," he said. "That's the East-meets-West tone I want to visually expand on for the film."

It sounds like Wan's Castlevania will take cues from the series' more recent games, with their girly-man anime protagonists. "I'm thrilled by the opportunity to make a highly stylized, fantasy, action film that focuses on the gothic storyline and the cool, anime-like characters," Wan said. "For once, the human hero is as sexy and dangerous as the vampire villain, and his weapon of choice was what attracted me to the project in the first place - The Vampire Killer Whip."

Bloody-Disgusting has what looks like an impressive piece of concept art, which shows somebody with white hair holding a whip in one hand and a katana in the other, facing down Dracula's castle. Fingers crossed this is good, people.

I'll have to crack them into a cross, because last time I did that Resident Evil stomped them into the dirt.

And Konami is excited because of the money truck that just pulled up outside the offices. I'll hold my tongue because it seems promising, and it does seem like they are on the right track, but the last film that came out of development hell was DragonBall: Evolution. Just thought I'd put that out. That, and I've never seen a good videogame movie. Ever.

It may be another video game movie, but hey, at least it's not another Uwe Boll movie.

Besides, from what I've read so far, Wan's got the right ideas in his mind .Lets just hope he puts them to good use.

I was just reading at LA Times about the fact that Microsoft, Ubisoft, and Rockstar all, point blank, refuse any solicitation from Hollywood to turn their IP into film.

At this point it's starting to feel like the French arguing with the Americans during the Revolutionary War. I like the idea of a good video game movie. Could be fun and interesting. But there is not a single video game adaptation produced that has not been terrible.

Just win one battle Hollywood. Make one good video game film.

*edit*

Here's the article:

It's a really good piece of journalism, I had no idea the major AAA game companies had such a "Go F*** Yourself" policy when Hollywood knocks on their door.

I'm a Castlevania nut, so I'll go see this and probably eat up any fan service thrown in. Do not come to me for an honest opinion.

Well, the animated Street fighter films were okay, especially when you consider that the source material is "racially diverse cast fights for some reason." As cheesey as they are, I compare them favorably to any other videogame film I've seen, ever. As long as Wan keeps in mind what makes Castlevania a good series, it shouldn't be horrible.

Also, the live action SF movie had that one good line where the villians are watching the security monitor as the truck gets closer and closer, and then Zahngeif shouts, "Quick, change the channel." That doesn't excuse anything else in the movie, but that one line was hilarious.

I like this guy. At least he knows the whips name.

I think if you cut out the white haired pretty boys the rest would be fine.

Paul Anderson is involved? Let's just hope they don't make Milla Jovovitch the main character and give her all kinds of crazy-ass psychic powers to defeat Dracula with. (Or maybe they will become friends, like the Nemesis)

I hope this turns out well. One thing I learned in my storyboarding class last semester is that I could make a good Castlevania movie...

He is just a producer. In other words he is the guy who goes to others and says "money please" and then gets his name in big letters on the poster like he did something special to attract more customers. Like Quentin Terintino's name was all over Hostel just because he is good friends with the director. He had nothing t odo with the actual creative development of the film.

So there is hope

That single line was Gold, the only good thing about that entire film, but it had me in stitches.

Also animated movies don't count, they were all pretty good except for SFIV, which was just horrendous, and one of the worst animated movies I've seen in a while. I'm talking live action. The Legend of Chun Li showed that Hollywood just doesn't get it for the most part, and is fine with butchering mythos'. Some people try to give me crap about a 'fresh reboot' when fresh reboots aren't wanted, why the hell would it be wanted when your favourite game/anime/media is being made for the big screen? You want everything that was great about it in motion, not Irish M.Bison and RPG wielding balrog, or high school Goku, or any other crap.

That being said, this one sounds a lot more promising when compared to those abominations, but you know what they say, 51st time bitten...

This will suck hard.

However, I have a sliver hope...

(but I also had a sliver of hope for Resident Evil 1-3, Bloodrayne, GI Joe, etc...)

GASP! A serious attempt is being made at this? Well, will wonders never cease.

I honestly want more video game movies, because they're totally feasible. Just because the films of the past have been terrible doesn't mean that videogame movies aren't possible... and even if the producers screw up and make a terible flick, we all get to swarm them with our hatred. It's sort of a win-win situation in my eyes: if they do well/mediocre, we get a decent flick to watch. If they do it poorly, we get to scream a lot and write negative reviews. This can apply to all film adaptations, regardless of the medium being adapted.

Then again, I'm looking at this as a reviewer. I enjoy bad things when they come out because they let me unleash my inner fury.

The fandoms of the things being adapted might not be so pleased.

Resident Evil films were extremely subpar.

I've never been a fan of the Saw series either.

Doesn't leave me in the best of hopes for this, but fingers crossed!
