Casual Gaming Doesn't Scare CliffyB

Xbox 360 [http://gearsofwar.xbox.com/], despite Epic's reputation for "chainsaws and blood" in its games.

GamesIndustry [http://www.microsoft.com]. "With the single largest investment to date, we're speaking to consumers through a fully integrated consumer marketing campaign aimed at reaching the casual and social segments," said Stephen McGill, head of Xbox gaming in the U.K. "It's an exciting time for consumers to experience the entertaining word of Xbox 360, and this campaign will embrace product experiences for all interests which celebrate people and tap into how consumers feel to create an emotional engagement with new audiences."

It's a position Cliff "Please Stop Calling Me CliffyB" Bleszinski says he understands. "Microsoft currently has to walk that line right now where they're selling a game that's a bit more hardcore like a Gears while trying to expand the installed base in regards to casual gamers," he explained, adding that while some developers feel "threatened" by the rapid growth of casual gaming, Epic [http://www.epicgames.com/] is pleased to see it happening. "We say anybody playing videogames in our opinion is a very, very good thing," he said.

He also implied that despite the obvious hardcore styling of Gears of War 2, the game's design has been softened somewhat to broaden its appeal. "Thankfully I'm in a position where I'm just trying to make the best game possible, but at the same time make sure that Casual [difficulty] is truly, truly easy, as well as having a little bit of heart in the story with a game that, yes, it's about monsters, yes, it's about chainsaws and blood, but it's also about a guy who's looking for his wife," Bleszinski said.

"There's still a fair amount of jock, fratboy, macho bullshit in the game - I'm not going to lie," he continued. "But at the same time, there's a little bit more personal elements in there, and some of the themes in the game with loss, retribution and the sadness of war, I think they're coming through a lot more in this game."

Gears of War 2 is currently in development for the Xbox 360 and is slated for launch on November 7.

Ugh... Why must everyone associate "casual gaming" with "family friendly" gaming. Most people I would consider casual gamers play Halo, Madden, and that's it. I hate the whole gamer division anyway, but I'm sick of people thinking "casual" means "kiddie"

Even children and housewives need to ram a chainsaw into the spine of a Locust every once in a while.

If the housewife screamed when she saw her kid playing Grand Theft Auto, how the hell would they be alright with chainsawing people in half?!?!

Personally, I think this new marketing is a little to late for MS. It's been 2 or 3 years since the Wii launched, and after that time everyone knows the Wii as a "family friendly" console. This is an extremely last minute change in direction for MS which I don't think will help them one bit.

"I'm not scared of Casual gamers...WE HAVE A CONTENT FILTER FOR GEOW NOW! FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY!"

"Fudge yeah"

"sweet"

"I'll borrow this from you and put it back on your grave after the war is over."

Casual gamers aren't these Wii loving cutsey "Nintendogs" fans everyone thinks they are anyway, seeing as that Unreal 3 was marketed to the casual as well :|

Plus, Gears doesn't exactly feel like a hardcore game. Maybe a "HARDCORE!" game but not what those elitists would think.

Damn, CliffyB is fucking hot!

On the matter of the game, I'm agreeing with indigo on this one.

Yeah, I mean I'm not drooling over him or anything but I was suprised that a lead game designer wouldn't look like... well this

I'm not honestly worried about "casual games"
As long as someone, somewhere still makes a game where I can leap down from a roof and shatter a samurai's scapula with a shiny steel blade.

Gears of War is a casual game. You play it after coming home from middle school eating snacks and drinking Coke. It's ankle deep, graphics focused, short attention span based theater for people who rent 3 Xbox games a week. Gow and casual gaming are hardly at odds.
