Catherine Intro Movie Heavy on Teasing, Light on Action

The newly-revealed intro movie to Atlus' erotic/horror title Catherine doesn't tell us anything, but it's still kind of cool anyway.

Here's the good news: Atlus has just revealed the opening credits for the bizarre-looking (and yet strangely appealing) Catherine on the game's official site [http://cathy.atlus.co.jp/]. Here's the bad news: The intro really doesn't show us anything beyond a quick tour of (what is presumably) protagonist Vincent's bachelor pad.

It's heavy on style, but very light on substance - compare it to the excellent Persona 4 intro [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEwKj6W14Jo], for example. If anything, it does a very good job at setting up the melancholy mood for Vincent's life and situation, so I can't really complain there. Beyond that, though, there's nothing.

The intro does reveal the actors who will be lending their voices to the game's cast, though - in Japanese, of course. There are some big names in the credits that many anime fans will likely recognize.

Koichi Yamadera, who voices main character Vincent, may be best known in the West for his roles as Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop and Ryoji Kaji in Neon Genesis Evangelion. He is playing opposite Kotono Mitsuishi as Catherine (or is she Katherine [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103584-Catherine-Gets-Seductively-Horrifying-New-Trailer]?), who won fame for her turns as the main character in Sailor Moon and Major Misato Katsuragi in Evangelion. Evangelion fans, it's okay to be amused by this.

Other major names in anime include Gundam's go-to masked man Takehito Koyasu (to be fair, Emperor Wakamoto [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takehito_Koyasu]" Wakamoto, who has voiced videogame characters like M. Bison in Street Fighter and Dracula in Castlevania. No word as to who they're playing, but the presence of Norio Wakamoto instantly makes anything a good ten times as cool as it would have been otherwise.

Catherine is currently slated for a Japanese release this winter, with no word whether it'll make it to the West or not. I certainly hope so - I can't remember the last time I've felt so intrigued for a game despite knowing so little about it.

Yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo... Is that what Japan thinks American music is like? Is that an American song? For a game like put out some pretty crazy trailers, this intro is a bit disappointing.

And is it bad that I didn't recognize any of those names?

This intro is pretty bland compared to the amazing Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 introductions. I like the music but it is a little repetitive but Shoji Meguro (I assume it's him) never disappoints.

Agreed. The intros for P3 and P4 really drew me in. Even Persona PSP had a great intro. By comparison, this intro is pretty subdued but it seems like the game will be anything but. However, there was a few "erotic" tracks on P3 and P4 because of the love hotel/striptease segments, and they were sinfully catchy, so I'm wondering what kind of direction the rest of the soundtrack will go in.

I really like the song, it's just the lyrics that make it unbearable. It always puts me off when I hear Japanese people singing english lyrics.

Problem with games like these is the buildup and our imaginations are usually far far better than what the finished product offers. I predict a lot of disappointment, which is a real shame.

I always think it's funny because if the artist doesn't know English I don't even realize what it's supposed to be at first lol.

I'll wait and see. I liked Persona 3 FES up until The Answer, and LOATHED Persona 1 PSP (I WILL be playing the 2 Duology and 4 at some point though). But otherwise my Atlus experience is entirely contained to the amazingly pathetic Demikids Dark.

waht didnt you like about the Answer?

Anyway, I cant wait to play. Atlus makes good, off beat games, so I'm not worried if the trailer doesnt show alot. i've enough of the other trailers to see the game is fucked up beyond belief, and when it comes to Atlus, that is a VERY good thing.

The grind, the minimal character interaction, the uninteresting storyline...

I have to admit I didn't really like The Answer either. Persona 3 had social links to break up the Tartarus grind. The answer just didn't have that, and it really needed it.

That said I loved the rest of 3, and also 4. Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 were really good too. I own Lucifer's Call(Nocturne) but I haven't really got very far, not far enough to get me hooked apparently. Eitherway overall I'm really looking forward to Catherine. I atleast hope it gets a US release so I can import the PS3 version. European releases are rare, so i'm not really counting on that.
