Celebrate 25 Years of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Ubisoft don't cut them no slack as they announce a new Turtles game from one of the developers responsible for Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

While the traveling musical [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles_(1987_TV_series)] (I admit, I cried until my parents bought tickets), there's no denying that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are a worldwide pop culture institution all their own.

For their 25th anniversary, Ubisoft (who released the game associated with the 2007 CG film, "Game Arts [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0453556/], to produce a four-player action title scheduled for Fall 2009. Unlike previous games based on the franchise, this will be the first one to not be attached to either a movie, television show or comic book.

"The awesome new video game that Ubisoft will release in 2009 is an important part of celebrating this Turtles milestone with fans around the world," said Gary Richardson, CEO of Mirage Studios in a press release sent out this morning. Earlier this year, Mirage put up a new website [http://www.tmnt25.com/] to celebrate the landmark year for Turtles fans, which includes contests, wallpapers and most importantly, the ability to watch clips of the original cartoon series.

In other Turtle news, there is still no definitive word on whether or not Warner Brothers and the Weinstein Group plan to move forward on a sequel to the 2007 CG feature, "TMNT." Imagi Studios, the animation studio behind the film, was quoted by IGN [http://movies.ign.com/articles/907/907882p1.html] late last year saying, "while Mirage continues to speak with Imagi, Mirage has begun discussions with several other movie companies regarding the production of a new TMNT film for distribution sometime in the not-too-distant future." As someone who was pleasantly surprised by TMNT, I hope to hear word on a new film by end of year.

I so hope they make the turtles game more adult-oriented like the later comics. More violent, more mature, less moralistic and "Saturday Morning Cartoon". The turtles always will rock awesomely, but as wicked as they are, everything for them has been too pre-teen to enjoy. Cater to the 80's kids who grew up with them, we'd be as fanatical today as we were as kids.
Are you being facetious, or do you really want violent, blood-thirsty teenage mutant ninja turtles?

Though, I guess I'd like that too. Just the novelty of seeing a teenage turtle with a headband on cutting foes to pieces and exchanging "Gears of War" testosterone-fueled dialogue would be a laugh.

Like the 'LATER' comics? The FIRST Ninja Turtle Comics were violent.

Ninja Turtles didn't start out as saturday morning cartoons. Originally they were -ACTUAL NINJAS- and, you know, killed people?

wow 25 years, thats one hell of a legacy for some thing like the Ninja turtles. But the game sounds like a good idea for as long as they dont make it completely kid orriented. If they make it very cartonny and childish i dont think it will sell much, but if they avoid that they could have the potential of putting out a great game

You really wanna be freaked out? He-Man was originally about a post atomo-colyptic barbarian riding a sabertooth fighting an interdimensional Skeletor.

And the cartoon of "Animal farm" was an anti comunist propagander film paid for by the CIA (this is actually true)

For me TMNT died in 1987 when the cartoon came out. I still remember the day, was so hyped up to see them as cartoon....
Think I turned off after the 5th pizza reverence... gah!

I don't think I could agree with another movie unless it went dark, like mentioned already. Am pretty psyched about a game, so long as they do it well anyways! Woot!

I'm huge fan. I still have some of the old ashcan comics from back in the day, and the real nature of turtles is FAR different that anything ever shown to the public at large; smoking weed, hitting on April, using automatic weapons, things like that. I was actually dismayed at the most recent movie; in it's original inception it was supposed to be more of a "return to origins" type of flick, a-la the first Michael Keaton Batman flick, or Chris Nolan's wonderful restart of the franchise (is Joel Schumacher burning in hell yet?), and it was supposed to be directed by John Woo(!)...unfortunately, at the last second, the studio decided to screw the "real" fans and make (another) family friendly turtles movie. Ah well, at least it wasn't as bad the "chick turtle" movie...anybody besides me see that and survive?

The original TMNT movie was a pretty good compromise. Remember that?

"CRICKET!? You gotta know what a CRUMPET is before you know how to play Cricket! *WHAM*!"

"Come back here! I'm not done with you! DAAAAAMMMNNNNN!"

If Vanilla Ice ever did one thing right in his life, it was making this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vx7dt0Wscpc]. Best song ever, bar none.

Though I will agree that going a bit darker would be nice. Kind of like how the first (well, second) Batman movie was good to start off with, but The Dark Knight is what the series really needed at this point in time.

The game sounds like it could be good, if done right...
but what are the chances of that?
