Child Must Have Thought a Gun Was a Wii Remote, Mother Says

One of the first things my FBI certified firearm safety instructor told me when I was receiving training for my carry permit was his simple observation that everybody lies when there is a firearms related accident. You non-shooters out there hear stuff about people cleaning guns and they "go off" or drop them and they "go off" and it sounds reasonable to you but let me assure you that we gun users know the truth: you don't clean loaded guns. You don't drop a gun and have it go off unless it's a semi already chambered and cocked or maybe an old style single action revolver. Guns fire when a hammer falls on a chambered cartridge because a trigger has been pulled 999,999 times out of a million. The other time the gun was on fire. "It went off" is code for "I was dicking around and shot myself/someone/something," or "I intended to shoot myself/someone/something and don't want to admit it now."

So yeah, I call BS too. There is more to the story.

PS - I received my firearm safety training in Tennessee.
I think it really was as simple as someone left a gun within reach of a child.

A gun with the safety off, a round chambered, and the hammer cocked.

So yeah, they conveniently blame it on their Wii because otherwise they look like the Worst Parents Ever (tm)
I don't know if that weapon is SA, DA, or DAO so I am not sure how likely it is that the gun would have been left lying around cocked. The guy really racked the slide and then set it down? That is truly insane. It is also so far from proper gun handling as to constitute premeditation as far as I'm concerned.

Complete and utter stupidity on the parents' side. You just never ever leave a gun within reach of a child. Or else you're just asking to get shot.

I think this accident has less to do with the Wii and more to do with the right to carry weapons (I don't know which amendment or law is that). Ban public firearms like most sane countries and you'll have less "3 year olds shooting themselves" headline news. Just a tip. Or at least don't allow retards to get weapons as easily as buying a burger...
But... But I have the right to have a gun! I don't want that taken away from me!
I'm really interested to know why anyone would think this...
I can't give you a proper answer, I just know many people think like this.

First off: Leaving a gun on the table, dumb. Leaving a loaded gun on the table, really dumb. Leaving a loaded, chambered gun on the table, beyond dumb and criminally negilgent.

The 3 year old doesn't even enter into this. 3 year old play with everything, they will look down the barrel and if something moves on the gun they will try move it. So they'll very likely flick the safety off and push/pull the trigger even if they have to use two thumbs.

Going by the picture in this thread of the two pistols I could see why the Mother could believe the child was playing with a Wii-mote. It's matte black, shaped like a real gun, it doesn't even have the neon orange tip that most toy guns do. I could very well see a cop shooting a kid who's wielding a similar controller around.

Here's my biggest problem with the 2nd Amendment: It hasn't been expanded on constitutionally since it was originally written. Back then you had flintlocks that kept the gunpowder and bullets seperate and required 2 minutes (trained) to reload.

I knew it! It's all a devious scheme of Nintendo to get everyone to kill themselves!

/sarcasm drive disconnected

I wonder if Australia is gonna ban the Wii now?

/sarcasm drive reconnected

A devious scheme, I tell you!

What a sad story. I am shocked and dismayed, and again I want there to be more to this, just to prove that this was something other than it seems to be...

There are select few 3rd party peripherals that do vaguely resemble a gun (if you blur your vision, assume you're in the future, and had just taken a few good whacks to the head)

These insane little jerks who think they are intellectual by posting comments about how the little girl deserved it because Darwinism are right up there on the scum bag list with the parents. Seriously, you are pathetic and you sound like a bunch of retarded nazi's who are angry because you don't have girlfriends. You sound just as stupid as the parents who either murdered their kid on purpose or murdered her through neglect. There is nothing funny about this, maybe people will laugh at the expense of your death. This is a real little girl who is in the ground. All the apathy and sick jokes really make me lose hope in the human race. The parents should be shot in public and you people who are making jokes should have to watch it and maybe go to the little girls viewing and see if it is still funny when it is in your face. Stupid little jackass's, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

If people wanna do stupid shit and go to hell, at least don´t take away our toys with them.
If it wasn´t a wii zapper it would be a tv remote and, therefore, all tv's would be evil and of course, sued.

Just as a recap:

[HEADING=1]GUNS KILL PEOPLE.[/HEADING]
Here we go again...

Guns kill nobody - Ever. It is pure fallacy to say so. You are ignoring the human element that gives the mindless machine its abilities. Without a person to point it at someone and pull the trigger out of malice, or in this case, stupidity a gun is simply a conglomeration of metal, plastic, springs, and pins - just like any tool or other mechanical device you may own.

I could set a loaded gun (any kind) on a table and wait literally for the rest of my life for it to kill someone. As long as nobody ever came around and picked it up, not a single human life would be lost to that firearm. Would that be a good idea? Of course not, but the fact remains that no firearm will ever kill anyone without a person that is either intent on killing someone or stupid to pull the trigger. There is no argument you could possibly make to the contrary and have it hold water. So let me reiterate:

THE ONLY DANGEROUS GUN IS ONE IN THE HANDS OF THE IGNORANT OR THE IRRESPONSIBLE.

To blame a machine for a human problem is ridiculous. The reason for the child's death is the parents' stupidity and inability to follow simple safety rules that are often required by law in just about every state; not the gun on the table. The mother and father in the article will have to live with themselves for the rest of their lives, and they will likely spend quite a long time in prison for their criminal negligence and possible, manslaughter.

Nobody is buying this moms story(if you can call her that). She probably is going to try to sue Nintendo so she will have enough crack or meth to last a life time. And I'm sure she will have more children who she fails to watch and neglect and some of them will survive and go on to act out their perverse fantasies and post disgusting, hateful, racist things on the internet because they are cowards and morons.

This is why guns need to be secured away from children.

God damn it, if you can afford a gun, you can afford a gun cabinet.
I said the same thing when I read the article. What bugs me is that many state require (by law) that people secure their firearms when not in use e.g. safes or locks of some kind, and there are still people that don't. At the very least, they could have kept the pistol in question (unloaded) in its plastic case with a cable lock wrapped around the handle. To my knowledge, nobody has ever been killed with a ~58oz 5"x5" plastic case.

No, you're not the only one.
Yeah, I saw that after I posted. They aren't too secure with the keys in the locks are they?

Oh well... I'm sure people get the idea...

That or murder. I think they killed the girl and are trying to cover it up. I know it sounds paranoid but it's possible. Guns can be pretty heavy depending on the type of guns, even hand guns, A 3 year old would probably have difficulty picking one up let alone pulling the trigger. Setting a loaded gun with the safety turned off is also and impossibly dumb move, let alone setting it down on a table where a child can get there hands on it. Having a parent in the same room as the incident but not doing any thing about it?, come on how would you not?. Do you have kids?, would you let your child or any other three year old ever pick up a loaded gun?, even to be cute?. You wouldn't nor would any sane person on this planet. I'm reckoning a murder here.

Though I could be wrong and it could just be an accident.

I actually thought "Who could be THAT stupid to leave a loaded gun around a 3 year old?" Then I saw that this story took place in Tennessee. Question answered.

It won't be long before the protests and outrage start up over Wii Remotes and violent video games rather than gun control and attentive parenting.

Oh say can you see... Apparently not.
