So, when was the last time you pointed a Wiimote at yourself? Even if we assume that the child was somehow unable to differentiate between two objects of different shape, size, color and material, why would it shoot itself instead of the TV?
I always check down the barrel of my Wii mote before firing - you have to squint a bit and pull the trigger to make sure it's transmitting right. Yeah.

AHEM.
Read the link. Fox ITSELF isn't making these outrageous claims. Just the dumbass mother.
Yeah, but Fox isn't exactly refuting her claims either.

I'm not in the mood for a total anti-gun rant right now so I'll just say two points. For either side of the argument.
1) Regardless of how we feel, we can't deny that had the gun not been there this wouldn't have happened.
2) Why do only gun related infant deaths get blamed on video games? Surely there must be cases of kids drinking a ton of bleach (although as a toddler I drank a bottle of oven cleaner and lived to tell the tale) or getting cut by knives? Are guns deaths just more common?

Sounds like another case of terrible parenting blamed on videogames. *sigh* This happens far too often.

Who wants to bet that at least one of the parents is an alcoholic?

Since I don't live in a country where people can own guns there's probably a law that says I have to comment on how unsafe guns are...
I'm not going to. I would, however like to say that any parent that leaves a loaded weapon where a child can reach it should be shot in the face.

I do have a question though: Would the average 3 year old even have the strength to pull the trigger far enough to actually shoot something?
Depends, on an automatic, if there's a chambered round and the hammer is cocked? Then yes. On a revovler, you can basically ignore the "if there's a chambered round" part.

Most firearms use a heavy first trigger pull as a safty feature. Once it's cocked though, the idea is to limit the amount of strain needed with each subsiquent pull of the trigger. If whoever'd taken the gun out the night before had simply decocked it, we might not be having this discussion now. Litterally, one light mussle movement to flick a switch or push a button could have saved this girl's life (not by safing it), but by making the trigger too heavy for her to pull.

So, imagine you're home and you hear an intruder. Like any good homeowner, you grab your gun to deal with them...
Is this how americans tick? Any good homeowner doesn't own a gun because he knows that the gun itself poses a bigger, more consistent threat than the vague possibility of intruders that are out to kill you.
From what I've gathered from most Americans I know that own guns and don't also believe in stricter limits/bans on guns, yes that's how they think.

And they get surprised when the rest of us go "what the fuck?"

Anyways, I hope the girl is in a better place now, away from those stupid, stupid parents. I hope they rot in prison, but I know they probably won't.

How does a parent "failed to notice - or perhaps care - that her child was playing with the weapon"?
Don't be so naive. Do you honestly believe parents can be watching their kids 24/7?

(I don't mean specifically you, this was just the first post I saw when I wanted to point out people being naive.)

wouldn't the father be the true idiot for leaving the gun out, and isn't the mother is either calmly evaluating the situation (since it was her fault and granted this would be some erie scary calm thought process of her), or doesn't want to admit a worse scenario that could have happened happened?

Also, before we get to the usual, and often deserved, Fox News bashing. Click the Fox News link. Fox News ITSELF isn't claiming this. Just the stupid mother.
I was actually vaguly surpised, the article on Fox News was remarkably sane sounding. The mother involved, less so.

Guns don't kill people.

Videogames kill people.........with guns!
Also gives lung cancer!

One wonders how you leave an unsecured weapon in the grasp of a fucking child. America, you should not be allowed to have guns unless you can keep them properly. Your 'right' to have guns is stupid, and this just proves it.

there are so many things wrong with this story:
if you leave a gun out where children can reach it your a bad parent
if you fail to notice your child playing with said gun you are a bad parent
if you blame video games for your child shooting him/herself when said gun is left on said table you are quite simply a idiot.
the mother along with the step father should be sent to jail for manslaughter. and, if they have anymore children they should be taken away.

This would never happen in Canada... It's illegal to store guns outside a gun safe.

In all fairness, this is a three year old were talking about, so i geuss i could understand her perhpas mistakeing a gun for a wii-mote, however, the fact that the mother wasen't watching her daughter, and the fact that there was a LOADED GUN IN THE ROOM WITH A TODDLER is inexcusable.

It's a shame, being take so young from this world.

We don't even know if they own a wii.
they probably didnt. its my experience if the parents dont care enough to take a loaded gun from a child they dont care enough to buy said child a video game system.
