Child development should be the responsibility of the parent. The government does not have the power necessary to be every child's guardian, and setting arbitrary and vaguely worded regulations is not an adequate alternative. Let parents do parenting.

Gevernments have gotten prerry retarded when it comes to mature content. Why can't they just leave it to parents and children themselves. The more you forbid something, the more interesting it becomes to children.

Children are (or should be) introduced to the workings of reproduction around the age of eleven/twelve, either by school or their parents, when their body starts to change. So is that suddenly illegal too? Schools tend to use (educational)videos and books to teach kids about the dangers of, say, unprotected sex and the workings of the entire reproductional process too ensure they know the risks and implications of sex etc.

Anywhas, I don't beleive it'd be clever to deny access to all remotely sexual content in between the kids learning about sex and their coming of age.

Piss of, Governments. Go fight a war or something.

Good God. I mean, I can understand where politicians are coming from with wanting to protect the youth. It just seems that everyone is taking it just way to damn far. This shit is gettin' ridiculous!

I always heard that EVA was good, but never actually watched it. Might check out that 'rebirth' series, maybe.

These people want to scan through all anime and want to take out anything sexual for the children.

These people have a weird obsession with children and a weird take on sexuality ... I wouldn't want them around my children (if I had any), they are far too creepy.
Yeah, I was telling myself the other day while I was watching cartoons with my nephew; why don't they have more sex jokes?

I'll put this the easy way, it's like the "Over crowded prisons...world hunger...i see two problems taking care of each other"

Over population, decreasing all these 'protect the children' crap.

Seriously, childhood obesity? Eliminate school zones, watch those little buggers run, they won't even think about food after that, they'll be too high on endorphines from near death trips to school.

I read on another site that this law would stop the sale of sexually explicit anime to children, adults can still buy all the teenage tentacle rape their hearts desire. How is this a bad thing?

But feel free to get all reactionary and beat freedom of speech to death. Adults will still have their freedom to see a cartoon depiction of a 14 year old violated by a giant squid.

This will be similar to an 18 certificate.

Chopper is 17 now. So One Piece will be safe. (And those who do can still pair him with Robin due to being technically human.)

Unless they are classing adult as 18 like America and not 16 like everyone else.

You know what, everytime I hear "Child Safety Laws" when it comes to "obscenity" and "offensive" material, there is always the strangest coincidence that everything found "obscene" or "offensive" is never what the children find such (or by matter of fact, have ever even seen the material personally), but rather what their overtly protective and ignorantly paranoid parents lobbying a local government want to effectively ban and squelch from the freedoms of expressions from others that they don't think should exist because of some "on high" moral code they perceive for the world, and use their children as an excuse to get knee-jerk responses from those that would typically be less suggestive to such things..

..Oh wait, that is exactly what happens. Nevermind!

"Child Safety Laws" are fine when they actually protect children in a legitimate manner from legitimate material, not infringing upon the freedoms to expression of others in order to continue to weave a tight sphere of opaque bullshit around their children from the "big, bad world" around them to "save" them from the evils of the "side boob!" and the "OMG SUGGESTIVE THIGH!", and even to the dastardly "SUGGESTIVE CARTOON CHARACTER!".

In the end, they are doing far more damage to their children than not. When that "child" hits 18 and goes out into that "big, bad" world once and for all? Oh fuck, they are in for a heavy surprise..

I'm really not against this one so much, I'm all for fighting censorship but frankly anime has been flying on the edge of what's acceptable for a long time. This law wont stop that stuff being sold, it will just stop it being sold on the bottom shelf etc in plain view of children. Anime and Manga shops will no doubt still have it, just not in a child accepted area.

I think the anime defense isn't something gamers should be jumping on the bandwagon for either, claiming its similar to the gaming situation is dangerous because the anime defense is one that would hurt the gaming cause.

All that softcore anime that normally involves loli and often homosexual near graphic scenes is pretty clearly pornographic. Not hardcore granted but it I think anyone would be hard pressed to say it isn't even remotely pornographic. If that was in America it wouldn't be protected by the first amendment anyway since it counts as porn so this argument wouldn't even exist in America. It would already be either censored or controlled.

Japanese artists who make that loli stuff however often and nearly always profess it is not porn but it is art instead. A view that they pretty much only hold just because the genitals are censored. That doesn't fly over here and its not flying in Japan anymore.

With games though we are trying to argue that it is a legitimate art form and it deserves all the protect from censorship that literature and cinema deserve. Our case is not bloody helped by having some anime porn being thrown in with our lot. That completely undermines are argument because the majority of people do consider loli porn and rightly so.

The law they have is far to vague yes and needs to be clarified, which in time I'm no doubt it will be. Mostly by challenges and appeals of individual cases that get thrown in later, that is normally how the legal system works. A vague law gets overturned in places later when it becomes to vague to stand up to scrutiny so going up in arms about this is a tad over reaction.

Still this isn't a gamers cause and I don't think this law is the same as them trying to censor games. Especially since laws like this end up getting refined over time anyway, Japan doesn't want to "Gut the anime and Manga industry" because it would lose a big corner stone of its economy. Not to mention a healthy chunk of its culture, anime and manga being a massively popular part of it.

I'm mixed about this...

On one hand, I do find that anime sometimes takes things too far and into poor taste, so some regulation of fringe cases wouldn't be a bad thing. But on the other hand, it sounds like a ton of overly conservative crap is being shoehorned into the same bill which might just do more harm than good...

I'm actually not that worried.
Oh, I'm against the law, believe you me, but if there's one thing Japanese people are good at (besides drawing and weird porn) it's subverting bureaucracy (see pachinko gambling,) and if there's one thing the Japanese government is bad at, it's enforcing laws.
Having been to Japan, and having several friends and contacts there, it's extremely easy to get porn manga just about anywhere - it's in convenience stores right next to kid's hobby mags, and I have personally seen little kids rummaging through it. I very much doubt that every konbini in Tokyo is going to rearrange its stock over this, or that the anime industry as a whole is going to be severely curtailed even if they do.
Of course, I'd still prefer that the thing not pass at all.
