You equate any and all criticism of a few favoured governments with "US propaganda", regardless of prominence or credibility. Its automatic; you're just putting the hours in at this point, and the actual circumstances don't matter. We both know that if the Chinese government shot down a US spy craft-- which the US undoubtedly uses, and I'm sure you won't dispute that-- you'd be here acting smugly dismissive towards anyone who even suggested it wasn't a US Spy craft.
You've been blinded by pro-corporate propaganda. That balloon was just a peaceful science tool created by peaceful communist scientists, meant to improve the plight of the worker, only to be destroyed by worker-murdering capitalists in order to snuff out a beacon of hope for the exploited.

You haven't yet presented one: you've so far offered a series of seemingly random suggestions that assume farcical bungling incompetence on the part of the Chinese government.
Which, TBH, seems a really odd defence.

Personally i think that was less a real attempt at spying and more a deliberate provocation. Just like all the time other nations violate each others air space just to make a point.
But because there is an ocean between China and the US, they used a balloon, not a fighter jet.

Seems it was a success with all the attention it got.

Apparently there were 3 Chinese spy balloons in US airspace under Trump, and another one before this under Biden, and nobody seems to have cared until now, so not sure about that.

I mean, no need to respond to provocation if millions of people aren't panicking

Sure, it's just when evaluating its success it should be remembered that there were four previous attempts that failed, assuming they were done for the same reason.

Meh. Turkey violated Greek airspace over 10 000 times last year and it certainly did not get a reaction all the time.

China doubled its Taiwan airspace violations last year and people still only cared during the Pelosi visit.

Provocations don't always work, but sometimes they do. One out of five is actually quite good a result.

And honestly that thing didn't cost much and can only have favorible results.
- If the US does not do anything, China can paint them as weak and afraid of mighty China.
- If the US complains, China can call them hypocrites and refer to the worldwide US survailance actions.
- If the US shoots it down, they can be painted as violent punks attacking peaceful civilian projects.

In a way, the earlier administration pretending to not see anything and play it down did the right thing for once.

The Chinese government can get fucked 1000 ways to bloody Sunday. Fuckheads practice human rights violation on a daily basis, treat their people like shit, and as far as I am concerned are the weakest of the weak for being so damn insecure and shutting down any critcism. If you fuckers are so strong, then why so afraid of ole Pooh Bear? Why is that you bitches?

Exactly-- this isn't particularly rare or strange, making the US response borderline hysterical. They're playing to a domestic audience, that's all-- both the Republicans making hay about Biden being soft on China, and the Democrats wasting a missile shooting it down just to assure people who will never be assured that they're not.

You know actually doing that would probably do wonders for human cooperation.
Oooh you'd think. But nope, the Conquista didn't do wonders for Amerindian cooperation. In fact, each warring tribe, used to maximize complex alliance networks against their opponents, tried to benefit from the arrival of Europeans and use them to gain the upper hand in their own conflicts. Those who tried to unite against the threat had just no chance in front of short-sighted opportunistic politics. Also, outside (or inside) enemies are never a true factor of unification, the fake/artificial ones are always used to crush or demonize inner dissent by simply intensifying local antagonisms, and the true ones are always seen as opportunities to gain power upon the peers. Heck, we're currently facing global extinction threats by global enemies : global warming, pandemics, etc. How's our common front going ?

So much for the green smurf strategy. 😟 If anything, aliens would just have to stand back and watch Maple Street burn...

Our changing and worsening climate is existential but very difficult for those of us with limited knowledge of weather systems - my dumb ass for instance - to quantify or parse out in our heads.

An alien warship that uses laser guns to burn cities to the ground is much easier for the average person to get their head around.

Anything capable of interstellar travel is more than capable of kicking our asses good and proper.
Depends.

As an analogy here, we could think of a country's ability to fight a war on its own borders, and far away overseas: in the latter, logistics becomes a very much greater problem and may severely impede the country's expression of power. Thus an alien race could feasibly be able to wipe the floor with us on their territory or neutral ground, but be unable to successfully invade the solar system. Relevant to this is that an alien race might be able to send a sublight transport to our solar system with technology not that far advanced over our own.

Yeah, there's that.

But how many people, at Shell, Exxon, etc, or even in political hemicycles, had the hard facts, all the tools and capacities required to process it ? And didn't give a shit, because there was some immediate benefit to get at the expense of, well, mankind and beyond...?

Expect a lot of "I for one welcome our"...

Yes, it's just a bog-standard provocation.

The Chinese stories about the balloon are inconsistent and muddled. It's not credible that they lost control of it and it accidentally just happened to float all the way through Alaska, down the coast to mainland US west coast and then across to the east coast in a sort of way that would maximise its coverage of US territory.

The US maybe could be a little more proactive about finding and shooting them down. It's reckoned at least three floated over under Trump, although they were not recognised as spy balloons at the time. In fact, the tracking of this one potentially reflects that the USA noticed these previous somethings and took more effort to check what it was.
