The Chinese government has very authoritarianly responded to protestor demands by announcing that they'll relax COVID restrictions.
I never report comments unless they are spam bots, but this post tempted me, ngl.
Yes, it's a pity they coupled it with mass detention for peaceful protest, police arbitrarily checking the cell-phones of anyone passing through the protest site, and the introduction of punishment for liking pro-protest posts on social media.
If handcuffs so tight they cut off circulation are loosened to where they don't, am I no longer wearing handcuffs?
so thankful that I live in a country where the government responds to protests by doing more of the thing the protestors are angry about
Isn’t it a little early to be declaring any sort of victory coming from these protests?
This is still the country that has banned Winnie the Pooh and rolled in tanks in response to a student protest, among many other human rights violations.
It’s entirely possible that the CCP will either marginally relax a few inconsequential restrictions why leaving the major ones untouched or, more likely, simply lie about relaxing restrictions while cracking down even harder on information distribution.
Hell, what’s to say they haven’t rounded up a bunch of those protesters, or people the CCP labeled protesters, and sent them to ‘reeducation’ camps or just simply executed them?
I'm sure if you wanted to, you could move to a country where they lock you inside your home sometimes so that you can feel accommodated when they let you outside on a leash instead.
And what's holding you back from going to great nations like China and Russia. Come on, make everyone happy and go for it.
Imagine waiting hours on end to get someone who swabs your throat every day. It's insane. Just have the government have people get 3 shots of the Chinese vaccine, let people get sick but not die, and move on. I suspect this is a test by the government with regard to preparing for the Taiwanese invasion. Lock everyone down, and ration their food via the CCP or CPC.
A fire in an apartment building in Xinjiang was the reason this started, but the main reason is due to people who are sick of zero Covid, and lockdowns and they see people in the west free to do whatever so of course they are going to get mad at the government. Plus youth unemployment is at like 25%, the economy is slowing, one of the best jobs in China right now is delivering meals to go via food delivery.
This just confirms my theory that if you are a dictatorship you have a lower threshold of fuckery you can do even in an economic powerhouse like China with its insane economic growth that no one has been able to match at the same time. There are one million dead Americans from Covid so of course, Trump lost, but there is no release valve for Chinese anger at being locked down for two whole years.
