Chinese Web Crackdown To Be 'Long-Lasting'

The Chinese government has told a small group of journalists that its campaign of cracking down on the internet is not politically motivated, but is instead a 'long-lasting' mission to make the 'net a better place for the people of China.

Since the campaign began, the Chinese government has closed down more than 1,200 websites, including popular blogging site Bullog.cn, where a number of posters had signed the controversial Charter 08, demanding a more democratic China.

But speaking to a small group of invited journalists, Liu Zhengrong, deputy director of the State Council Information Office's Internet Bureau, was quick to quash the idea that there was a political motivation for the crackdown, saying "The purpose of this campaign is very clear, it's aimed at creating a healthy internet environment for all young people and making the internet in China safer and more reliable."

"Internet pornography and vulgar content seriously threaten the mental and physical health of youth and threaten to damage the healthy development of the internet in China," Liu continued, adding that more than 35 percent of web surfers in China were under 19.

Commentators have been quick to point out however, that 2009 is the 20th anniversary of the Tianamen Square protests [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiananmen_Square_protests_of_1989 ], and suggest the government is in fact moving to stifle dissent in this sensitive time. Nicholas Bequelin of Human Rights Watch said, "The internet remains where the battle for information lies and the fact that the government is devoting so much effort at reining it in, in itself indicates how much of a threat they perceive it to be."

They've been censoring the internet in China for years, and no matter what they do, somebody always finds a way around it. Hopefully the truthers over there can get real news and information to large groups of people.

The Chinese aren't communists, communism is the idea that wealth should be shared among everyone, that government should be open and that everyone should be free and equal. In fact it's quite a nice philosophy, it just doesn't work in reality. The Chinese government just would rather be called communists (which the US and most of Europe have tried to associate with negative connotations for years now) then fascist dictators (which everyone knows what it is associated to).

So... you're saying that communism doesn't work, but because it doesn't work, its not really communism? WTF?

This is all just wrong in so many ways. It's simply bare faced lying! I mean, look:

" ...more reliable."
Buh? How?

"Internet pornography and vulgar content seriously threaten the mental
Oh no! Democratic thinking and the world outside China's borders! Besides, I blame the parents.

of youth and threaten to damage the healthy development of the internet in China,"
There won't be and internet if they close all the porn sites!

The idea of communism sounds like the perfect society, and it would be if it weren't for the fact that it would never work in theory (true equality will never happen, we will always need a percieved superior being to take charge).

Countries like China are not actually Communist, they simply call themselves Communists because that is what they're aspiring to be (even if they haven't had much success).

So, my point still stands and you like to nitpick?
China isn't even trying to be communist, the current systems of the US/Europe/etc. are closer to communism then China is. It's just better to be called communist rather then fascist.

ummm no... there IS a difference between Socialist and Communist.

and just so you know, fascists and communists are basically polar opposites on the political spectrum.

Or as the popular saying goes:

"Communism is Socialism with Firing Squads"

Nevermind that even on paper, Communism is inherently flawed. Nobody seems to notice them or they just ignore them.

But this isn't the place for this kind of discussion.

This is true. Having met a few blokes who moved over here from china and they are really good at finding loopholes. Not saying its a large amount who know how to do it, but those that do are very clued up.

First of all, the Chinese government really isn't communist, more fascist. Secondly, they can keep lying, but people will just find other loop-holes.
