The latest patch seems to fixed the disconnect problems with Chromehounds, so I created the long-awaited Escapist squad today. It's called "Free Company" and is Sal-Kar nationality. (Free Company was the term for mercanary bands in the Hyborian world of Conan. Team Escapist is currently playing a Conan RPG.) The code to join the squad is "XYXY". My gamertag is Archon Drakov.

This game is the only thing that really makes me wish I had a 360 right now. I know the combat isn't supposed to be great, but everything else just seems so cool and it has amazing graphics. I still think I'm going to wait it out until Overlord comes out even though that means I'll have missed out on all the Chromehounds action.

Damn it all.

I'll get right on this when I get back, boss.

I suggest that we need a battle cry. How about "Crush your enemies!"

I sent you a message, Archon, but I haven't been able to find the squad to join up. Does it only allow you to accept memberships when a squad member is online or something?

Well, seems the system is still not 100% by a long shot. I tried to join the squad, didn't exist. That happened for about 5 minutes. Then suddenly it existed, but I couldn't join it. Said "Failed to Connect" over and over again as I tried. Logged out and in, squad doesn't exist anymore again. That happened three times :/

An honorable effort! I will try again soon :) Anyone else have any luck?

After some initial weirdness, I was able to join the squad. Archon and I played some missions vs. CPU hounds to get used to this whole "squad" thing. It was a good time. I'm still tinkering about in my garage. :p

I had to apply three times -- the first time it told me that the squad members had all gone offline, the second time it told me that my application was not accepted, and then Archon disabled the passcode and I was able to join the third time. I don't know if the two things were related.

I don't know if the squad leader has to be online to accept applications, or if it can be anyone from the squad, but the squad definitely has to be "online" in some capacity to accept applications. It's kind of silly that there's no messaging system for squad applications -- you just have to sit there until the application is accepted, rejected, or network weirness interferes. The third possibility seems to be the most likely.

A few further notes on the Chromehounds squad:
1) I had accidentally set it to English (UK), which may have been causing search problems.
2) Be sure you are on "Recreational Zone" when you search for the squad. We're not Pro or Underground.

Ajar and I played a bunch of battles against the CPU yesterday (cooperative squad battles). Good times. I'd like to get a squad of 5 doing some battles. Here's my current thinking for team roles and strategy:
1) Commander / Defender
2) Heavy Gunner
3) Sniper (forward observer)
4) Soldier / Scout
5) Soldier / Scout

The Heavy Gunner lays down a base of fire, with the Sniper serving as a forward observer and shooter. The Soldier/Scouts are the maneuver force, that either hit the enemy or their base (and units should be equipped with base-destroying weapons if possible). The Commander serves as secondary base defense and secondary forward observer. Does that make sense? Who's interested?

I'm definitely interested. Your role list looks solid to me. :)

Fast-moving soldiers, scouts, or soldier/scout hybrids could also run around capturing COMBAS towers -- if the battle isn't decided by annihilation or HQ destruction, the winner is determined by some combination of surviving members and number of COMBAS towers held when time runs out. I'm not sure what exactly that combination is, though, since like many other things, it isn't specified in the manual.

Between the commander's NA maker and the sniper's long-range scopes, we should be able to keep tabs on enemies as long as we can control enough COMBAS towers.

When I signed out of my garage last night, I noticed that Sal Kar control was down to 9%. It looks like this war may not last much longer, so if you want any Sal Kari parts, now's probably the time to pick them up.

I was online tonight, and Sal Kari control was at 4.5%. I have also discovered the joy of heat-seeking missiles, but I haven't found an effective way to counter them when other people use them.

Is anyone up for some Escapist Chromehounds this weekend? I'll be around; I spent much of the last two months travelling and plan to spend much of the next few weekends sitting on my butt, preferably playing Chromehounds or GRAW on Xbox Live, NWN with my girlfriend, or watching Rome. :)

Rome rocks. Great show.

I'll be around this weekend with the exception of Saturday afternoon. Game on!

Yeah, I loved it when I watched it for the first time last winter, so I picked up the DVDs when they came out and am now enjoying the series on my new, bigger TV. :)

Saturday night would work well for me, though that conflicts with the scheduled Halo 2 if Fletcher wants to play. Sunday afternoon would also be fine; I assume people sleep in the mornings. :D

Save me a slot! I'll be joining the squad as soon as I can - unfortunately, with the girlfriend's parents in town (and crashing at my place no less) I can't sneak in much Xbox time at the moment.

Hey there -- this is Ajar's giflfriend, he asked me to log in for him and let y'all know that his internet is down, so he won't be online to play tonight unless it magically reappears. Someone's coming out tomorrow to look at it, so he might be back before the end of the weekend. He is horribly distraught, I'm sure. ;)

Hello Ajar's girlfriend. Are you to blame for this outage? Some sort of scheme to get him to "take you out" on a "date". We've heard of such things here at The Escapist, and we don't stand for them!

j/k

Thanks for the heads up!

Hey, whaddaya know, it left me logged in. . .

I am several thousand miles away from Ajar at the moment, so no, I am not to blame. If I was there, there would be no scheming involved. I've got dibs. ;)

(Which means we'd be playing the new Lego Star Wars together, get your mind out of the gutter!)

Ahhhhhhhhh, sweet, sweet bandwidth! Man, that sucked.

I'll be on Live this afternoon, mucking about in GRAW and Chromehounds -- if any of you are on and want to play Chromehounds, just shoot me a message on Live if I'm not already in the squad lobby doing solo missions. :)
