Chrono Trigger and the Sunken Desert Trap

So I've been playing through the original SNES version of Chrono Trigger. I entered the sunken desert, got all the loot and defeated the boss. However, I'm now trapped in the boss room as it won't let me back onto the stairs to exit.

I know this happened in the DS version but that people were able to eventually exit. Does anyone know if this glitch is permanent in the original thereby trapping you in that room for good?

I've been trying to get out for like an hour. I even tried loading an earlier save and bringing Magus, figuring maybe he'd be easier to get out with since he floats but that didn't work either.

I've never had the problem, but from what I've seen most people say you just keep running at it or something and hope it eventually lets you out.

Well that was weird. My thumb was getting sore from using the Dpad so much so I went into the input settings in the emulator and set the directional controls to use the left analog stick and got up the stairs in like two seconds.
