Chrono Trigger Going Mobile in Japan

One of the most legendary RPGs of all time will soon be coming to your mobile phone - if you live in Japan.

I've never tried to disguise my love for classic Square JRPG Chrono Trigger: I fully believe that the SNES RPG, released here in the States in 1995, still remains one of the best gaming experiences ever created. In 2008 it saw a re-release on Nintendo's DS, but that won't be its only new platform.

A teaser site [http://www.square-enix.co.jp/mobile/sem/chronotrigger/] set up by Square-Enix has little concrete information other than the game's logo and a nebulous date of "Spring 2011," but given that the site itself is classified under "Square-Enix.co.jp/mobile," its meaning is obvious - the timeless JRPG is almost certainly headed to phones.

Sadly, Square-Enix's mobile gaming efforts have thus far solely seen the light of day in Japan, despite the rising popularity of iPhone and Android gaming around the world. I won't lie, though; if they released Chrono Trigger on Android in the West, I'd totally pick it up on my Droid.

You know, between this and the impending PSN re-release of Chrono Cross [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106154-Chrono-Cross-Crossing-to-PSN-in-Japan], it's almost enough to make a Chrono fan think that Square-Enix is priming the pump for a long-awaited third installment in the series. Of course, we all know that would never happen and that we'd just be setting ourselves up for disappointment.

And yet, we still dream - of the shore of another world [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROKcr2OTgws], and of finally getting a third freakin' Chrono game.

Considering Secret of Mana has JUST been released worldwide on the iTunes App Store.. I highly doubt that it's just Japan utilizing the mobile gaming market..

It's only a matter of time until others appear on the iDevices.. Hell, FF1 & FF2 are on there!

@Daystar Clarion; Regarding "shitty mobile phone controls", I really don't see any problem. The iPhone's touch-pad controls are pretty damn neat for FF1&2 and Secret of Mana! Chaos Rings ain't bad either.

The DS doesn't exactly have optimum graphics either. The PSP Kingdom Hearts games look a thousand times better than the DS ones. So.. Yeah..

I'd have expected this to have happened already, what with the franchise being so revered and all and everything else in their back catalogue already on mobile phones.

I don't see why they'd go to this effort porting both games to modern hardware if they weren't planning to keep the series going. Last time I checked, they're always making new Mana games. I think the DS Trigger port was a test run, now their hyping us up with nostalgia in time their big reveal at E3 next year. In fact, I'm calling it right now, Chrono Break on 3DS in 2013. Or Iphone. Probably not a home console.

Seriously, Chrono Cross has the most wonderful soundtrack...

Anyway, count me in for a third Chrono game.

If you've got an iphone, just jailbreak and download the snes4iphone app with some roms. The controls can be a bit unresponsive but it works alright for old school rpgs. Wouldn't want to play street fighter 2 though.

I played FF 3 (or 6) and chrono trigger while riding to work on the tube in London.

And before anyone calls me a pirate, I do still own legit copies of both games.

Yeah it did... pity it was a terribly plotted game. I'm not calling it a bad game, hell I'm not even insulting the plot, it was just plotted and paced poorly hell you don't even have a motivation for a good amount of the game besides "fucking DO IT"
