Clive Barker Likes Jericho But It's Okay If You Don't

Think Jericho [http://www.codemasters.com/jericho/] sucked? Clive Barker's not so sure, but he's willing to take your word for it.

Speaking to MTV News [http://www.mtv.com/news/], Barker claimed he's "not the expert" when it comes to gameplay, saying, "I come for the character designs, monsters, atmosphere." Despite its flaws, he said, "I was very proud of the game. I think it looks amazing."

"But I believe people when they say the gameplay isn't what it should be and I'm perfectly sure if they're saying that, there is probably some truth in that," he continued. "To the extent that I can, I will try to get it better next time. But in the end, that's not my area of expertise."

In spite of the critical drubbing taken by Jericho, and the unfortunate commercial failure of the excellent George Romero [http://www.clivebarker.com/html/visions/bib/relat/misc/undying/undying2.htm] has done that. He's made the definitive movies, now why make games of them?"

"My thing with Jericho was: Let's make something new. It isn't impossible," he continued. "You know, people say everything has been done. No. You know, 20 years ago, when Pinhead walked onto the screen nobody had seen anything else like it before, and I feel when you talk about Silent Hill [http://www.residentevil.com] you're talking essentially [the metamorphosis] of zombie movies. They have limited appeal for me."

"Though I respect hugely the effort and the care and the beauty of games, I want to be working with people who want to create the Citizen Kane [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_and_Peace] of games and not just be warming up George Romero," he said.

Ironically, Barker also revealed that Clive Barker's Jericho is being made into a movie, directed by Ryuhei Kitamura [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0457565/].

Calling Silent Hill a mere warmed up zombie movie/game is way off. I think Silent Hill was more ground breaking then Jericho in pretty much every aspect.
It's good to see he can take criticism though and i like how he views games as an art form he wants to be part off. Don't really know the guy (except for what work he did) but he comes across as a pretty decent bloke.

Yes, but when you play 'Genericho' and your character walks onto the monitor to spout off how she's a lesbian every 15 minutes or so, we have seen that one before. And that kind of "atmosphere" isn't exactly Welles caliber.

Barker: "Yeah I don't know, I thought that was a great game, a real piece of art. But you know nobody liked it so it can't really be that good. I feel like everyone in this industry is very forward thinking, but I had nothing to do with the bad dialogue in Jericho."

I mucked my pants.

It's good to see Clives trying to do things differently. As much as Silent Hill really isn't zombies, it's still good to see he's being critical of himself. Anyway, Jericho movie. As long as Uwe Boll stays the fuck away from it... it may be good.

Watch this space.

I will actually pay to see the movie version of this if the title is Ryuhei Kitamura's Clive Barker's Jericho.

Twould be amazing methinks.
Now imagine a Schafer/Valve project...
To take this to it's logical conclusion...

A Valve/Schafer/Barker project. Oh the awesomness.

You are a young psychic at a psychic summer camp. Armed with only a crowbar and your wits, you must rescue the brains of your fellow camp attendees, escape the wrath of a 3000 year old pseudo-Faustian Russian necromancer, outwit a wizard who has turned himself into a house in order to lure in children and steal their life-energy, all the while under the shady gaze of a mysterious man with a briefcase.
That would be EPIC win!
The Psycho Half-Life of Jerichonauts?

If he sticks to his conception of video games, then the next one might be as different as he says he wants his games to be, which Jericho wasn't much.
He should be involved in all aspects of the game, but rest on the shoulders of designers who know their stuff.

*blinks* You know...at first I read that as "a Shatner/Valve project". Which could also be interesting (if in all the wrong ways). Anyone here remember TecWar?

Haha I remember playing that old TecWar first person game waaaay back when. Makes me feel kinda old, and makes me wonder what happened to that style of shooter/investigation game.

I didn't think the Jericho demo looked too bad until I ran into the first QT sequence, the controls for which apparently can't be remapped. I use non-standard movement keys (ie., not WASD, it's a hold-over from my old keyboard-only Doom days) and as soon as I hit that point the game was rendered unplayable. It's a shame because I was giving serious thought to picking it up, but that's a real show-stopper.

And yes, Undying was excellent. It runs fine under XP, although it's showing its age (seven years is a long time for any game) and the early stages of the game are seriously *****-ass hard, even on the easy setting. It also suffered from apparent budgetary problems; you can see almost the exact moment when the producer ran into the room and yelled, "Holy shit! We're outta money, boys, let's wrap this up!" But it's still one of the best implementations of horror in a videogame I've ever run across.
