I don't think the kid intended to kill the guy either, it seems like he was attacked and responded by defending himself. So he accidently killed a criminal that broke into the kids home and then when confronted and given the option to leave, chose to attack the kid wielding the katana. Seems pretty straight forward to me... and awesome.

the kid either did two slash's, or did one which ended up in the dudes chest

either way...OWNED
had to be more then 2, a katana isnt a point blank range weapon, you need range and leverage for it to cut

I think if this was in Britain the kid would have been arrested, we have funny laws about self defence, I like the American Laws on self defence.. the make sense.
Other wise I have a few swords and training to defend my "Castle" from "Intruders" although I doubt I'le ever be required to use it giving that I know and I along with my family is well known by all the criminals in this area and there not the type to steal of those they know.

Bravo to the college kid, that scum got what he deserved.
I certainly hope the poor guy isn't charged with anything, it was self defense if the guy lunged at him.

That guy must have been pretty thick if he lunged at a guy that had a very long, sharp, and pointy sword. I think I would be more scared of that than a gun.
not if you had a gun.

the thing is, a knife in a gunfight would nto work because gun fights are usually held in more open places, if your talking about the garage in your own home, hell yeah id pick the sword

On that note, why didn't this kid have a baseball bat, tire iron or taser?
you ever been in a boys room in america??? guns may be allowed here, but having a sword/ kickass knife is a right of passage, i have 5 katanas, one authentic, one sharpened, and 3 knives, not counting my leathermens

I myself would rather use a hand gun, or compact SMG. I now feel like a massive pussy.
i dont know about you, but here fully automatic weapons (like an smg) are illigal, hand guns however are not

Simple case of self defense. I would not imagine him to be held accountable under any court in the free world. If he attacked him without a threat (the intruder lunging at him) then yes, it would be the katana-wielder's fault.

I still prefer a tire iron, it's cheap, effective and brutal.

Gunfights are not "held" except in movies. They start either when you start them, or when someone else starts them.

How "open places" gunfights take place in is nearly irrelevant when the majority of them happen at distances lower than 7 feet.

And while swords are great, they do not hold a candle to firearms. Srsly.

There's a thing called appropriate force, here in Britain.
I could use, say, a shovel on someone, but they'd have to be wielding a melee weapon themself or posing a direct threat to my life otherwise it'd be a bit... well, the police would get a bit angry about me using too much force.

On that note, why didn't this kid have a baseball bat, tire iron or taser?
Actually police now say your not allowed to defend yourself at all. Several lawsuits have been filed and won against the person who defended themselves.

People break into the house and your not allowed to lay a finger on them.
annoyingly true, in the U.K if someone breaks into your home you have to offer them a cup of tea and a bourbon.

This reminds me of a case in England where a farmer was charged for murder by shooting a man (one of three men) who broke into his house in the middle of the night. unfortunately the british law system seemed to have taken an anti-common sense pill that day and he was sentenced for about 12 years. I'm glad to see that the US (sorry, i'm crap at geography so I'm assuming Maryland is in the US) has managed to realise that man is able to defend himself from an attack from a repeated felon. 1 point to justice! :) xx
