Commander Keen Fan Remake in the Works

A New Zealand gamer is hard at work on a project that's sure to make fans of old-school platformers sit up and take notice: A remake of the id Software classic Commander Keen [http://www.3drealms.com/keenhistory/index.html].

A wrote [http://www.nzcgi.com/index.php]. "I'll dribble work as it happens."

The Billy Blaze of the remake is a little more mature than he was in his first game, 12 years old instead of eight, and despite the vastly improved visuals of the updated version Laz said that he wants to stick with "EGA restricted colors" for Keen's clothing, which are virtually identical to the original.

The project is still in the very early stages and could fall victim to anything from a legal objection from wristwatch interface [http://www.idsoftware.com] look very good and would seem to indicate a certain degree of seriousness on the part of the creation. I'm not what you'd call a big fan of platformers in general but as someone who played his fair share of the original Commander Keen back in the day, this is one remake I wouldn't mind taking for a spin someday.

I would love to see this come about, but I doubt it will. Not without help from other people as well.

Needs more pogo stick so far.

An update:

http://www.nzcgi.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=1254&sid=35d44237850d8284fede55369ac08af3&start=45

"My little project has gained international recognition recently with the news of this project somehow making it onto Kotaku and The Escapist Although this is exciting, it also makes me nervous, I didnt want it to get too much attention as it increases the likely hood of a cease and desist from the original IP owners. Although im not breaking any copywrite laws (im not making any money from this project), If I were to recieve said notice, I would have no choice but to reluctantly "cease and desist". Hopefully that never happens because its nice to see the level of enthusiasm of some watchers.

Im currently working on animating the wrist watch menu, its taking some time. Mainly because I have been distracted by Left for Dead 2 of late

I may have some videos later tonight, or possibly tommorow."

I personally wish him good luck with the project! I think I'll get the original on Steam in fact, haven't played it for a good while.

Nice try, but....ew, that's not the Commander Keen I remember from my childhood. I loved Commander Keen, so much, played the crap out of Goodbye Galaxy, especially Paddle Wars. Good ol' Paddle Wars....*sigh* Time flies.

But no, this remake doesn't seem like it'll do it as much justice as I'd love to see. But even though I'm sceptical, I'm still keeping my eye on this. Hopefully I'll be wrong.
